1 Then the LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said:	1 Allora il Signore parlò a Giobbe di mezzo a un turbine, e disse:
2 Who is this that obscures divine plans with words of ignorance?	2 « Chi è costui che infarcisce sentenze in ragionamenti da ignorante?
3 Gird up your loins now, like a man; I will question you, and you tell me the answers!	3 cingiti da uomo forte ai fianchi: io t'interrogherò, e tu rispondimi.
4 Where were you when I founded the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.	4 Dov'eri tu quando io gettavo le fondamenta della terra? Dimmelo, se hai tanta intelligenza.
5 Who determined its size; do you know? Who stretched out the measuring line for it?	5 Sai tu chi ne fissò le misure? Chi tese sovr'essa il regolo?
6 Into what were its pedestals sunk, and who laid the cornerstone,	6 Sopra dì che poggiano le sue basi? O chi pose la sua pietra angolare,
7 While the morning stars sang in chorus and all the sons of God shouted for joy?	7 quando a me cantavano di concerto le stelle del mattino e plaudivano tutti i figli di Dio?
8 And who shut within doors the sea, when it burst forth from the womb;	8 Chi rinchiuse con porte il mare, quando eruppe come uscendo dal seno materno?
9 When I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling bands?	9 Quando io lo rivestii di nuvole e lo avvolsi nella caligine come in fasce?
10 When I set limits for it and fastened the bar of its door,	10 Quando gli tracciai i miei confini, misi sbarre e porte,
11 And said: Thus far shall you come but no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stilled!	11 e dissi: Fin qui verrai e non oltre: qui frangerai gli orgogliosi tuoi flutti?
12 Have you ever in your lifetime commanded the morning and shown the dawn its place	12 Hai tu mai, in vita tua, comandato al mattino? Hai mostrato all'aurora il suo luogo?
13 For taking hold of the ends of the earth, till the wicked are shaken from its surface?	13 Hai tu afferrati e scossi i lembi della terra per scuoterne via gli empi?
14 The earth is changed as is clay by the seal, and dyed as though it were a garment;	14 Essa si trasformerà come l'argilla sotto il sigillo e apparirà come coperta d'un manto.
15 But from the wicked the light is withheld, and the arm of pride is shattered.	15 Sarà tolta agli empi la loro luce e il loro braccio teso sarà spezzato.
16 Have you entered into the sources of the sea, or walked about in the depths of the abyss?	16 Sei tu penetrato nelle profondità del mare? Hai tu passeggiato negli ultimi recessi dell'abisso?
17 Have the gates of death been shown to you, or have you seen the gates of darkness?	17 Forse ti sono state aperte le porte della morte? Le porte tenebrose le hai viste?
18 Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell me, if you know all:	18 Hai tu considerate le dimensioni della terra? Parlami di tutte queste cose, se le conosci:
19 Which is the way to the dwelling place of light, and where is the abode of darkness,	19 fin qual via abiti la luce e qual sia il luogo delle tenebre,
20 That you may take them to their boundaries and set them on their homeward paths?	20 da poter ricondurre l'una e le altre ai loro luoghi e conoscere i sentieri della loro dimora.
21 You know, because you were born before them, and the number of your years is great!	21 Sapevi tu adora di dover nascere? Conoscevi il numero dei tuoi giorni?
22 Have you entered the storehouse of the snow, and seen the treasury of the hail	22 Sei tu entrato nei serbatoi della neve? Hai tu veduto (gli arsenali) delle grandini,
23 Which I have reserved for times of stress, for the days of war and of battle?	23 che io ho preparate nel giorno del nemico, pel tempo della battaglia e della guerra?
24 Which way to the parting of the winds, whence the east wind spreads over the earth?	24 Per qual via si diffonde la luce e si spande il calore sulla terra?
25 Who has laid out a channel for the downpour and for the thunderstorm a path	25 Chi aperse le cateratte agli acquazzoni e la via al folgore tonante,
26 To bring rain to no man's land, the unpeopled wilderness;	26 per far piovere sopra la terra desolata, sopra il deserto dove non dimora alcun mortale,
27 To enrich the waste and desolate ground till the desert blooms with verdure?	27 per inondare la solitudine inaccessibile e farvi germinare l'erba verdeggiante?
28 Has the rain a father; or who has begotten the drops of dew?	28 Chi è il padre della pioggia? Chi generò le stille della rugiada?
29 Out of whose womb comes the ice, and who gives the hoarfrost its birth in the skies,	29 Da qual seno uscì il ghiaccio, e la brina del cielo chi l'ha generata?
30 When the waters lie covered as though with stone that holds captive the surface of the deep?	30 Le acque s'induriscono come pietra e la superficie dell'abisso diventa solida.
31 Have you fitted a curb to the Pleiades, or loosened the bonds of Orion?	31 Potrai forse tu unire le brillanti stelle delle Pleiadi o interrompere il corso di Arturo?
32 Can you bring forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or guide the Bear with its train?	32 Sei forse tu che fai apparire a suo tempo la stella del mattino e fai nascere Vespero sopra i figli della terra?
33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens; can you put into effect their plan on the earth?	33 Conosci forse l'ordine del cielo e potrai spiegare la sua influenza sulla terra?
34 Can you raise your voice among the clouds, or veil yourself in the waters of the storm?	34 Alzerai la tua voce alla nube e ti ricoprirà l'acquazzone?
35 Can you send forth the lightnings on their way, or will they say to you, "Here we are"?	35 Manderai tu le folgori, ed esse andranno, e al ritorno ti diranno: Eccoci?
36 Who puts wisdom in the heart, and gives the cock its understanding?	36 Chi pose nel petto dell'uomo la sapienza, e chi diede al gallo il discernimento?
37 Who counts the clouds in his wisdom? Or who tilts the water jars of heaven	37 Chi spiegherà l'ordine dei cieli e farà tacere la loro armonia?
38 So that the dust of earth is fused into a mass and its clods made solid?	38 Quando la polvere sopra la terra si fonde e ne induriscono le glebe?
39 Do you hunt the prey for the lioness or appease the hunger of her cubs,	39 Sei tu che vai a predare per la leonessa e satolli le brame dei suoi leoncelli,
40 While they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in the thicket?	40 quando s'accovacciano nelle tane e stanno in agguato nelle caverne?
41 Who provides nourishment for the ravens when their young ones cry out to God, and they rove abroad without food?	41 Chi prepara al corvo il suo nutrimento, quando i suoi piccoli gridano a Dio e van qua e là perchè non hanno da mangiare? »
