1 Then the LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said:	1 Yahvé répondit à Job, du cœur de la tempête il lui dit:
2 Who is this that obscures divine plans with words of ignorance?	2 Qui est cet homme qui obscurcit mes décisions et parle de ce qu’il ne sait pas?
3 Gird up your loins now, like a man; I will question you, and you tell me the answers!	3 Allons, prends tes armes comme un brave: je vais t’interroger et tu m’instruiras.
4 Where were you when I founded the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.	4 Où étais-tu, quand je fondais la terre? Parle, si ta science est exacte.
5 Who determined its size; do you know? Who stretched out the measuring line for it?	5 Qui en a fixé les mesures, le sais-tu? qui a tendu sur elle le cordeau du maçon?
6 Into what were its pedestals sunk, and who laid the cornerstone,	6 Sais-tu sur quoi reposent ses bases, et qui en a posé la pierre angulaire?
7 While the morning stars sang in chorus and all the sons of God shouted for joy?	7 Les étoiles du matin, pour elle, chantèrent en chœur: tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des acclamations.
8 And who shut within doors the sea, when it burst forth from the womb;	8 Qui enferma la mer à deux battants, lorsqu’elle jaillissait, sortant du sein,
9 When I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling bands?	9 lorsque je lui donnais, pour la couvrir, les nuées, et pour langes, des nuages sombres;
10 When I set limits for it and fastened the bar of its door,	10 lorsque je lui fixais ses frontières et la contenais avec portes et verrous?
11 And said: Thus far shall you come but no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stilled!	11 Je lui ai dit alors: “Tu n’iras pas plus loin; ici se courbera l’orgueil de tes flots!”
12 Have you ever in your lifetime commanded the morning and shown the dawn its place	12 Mais toi, as-tu jamais commandé au matin, indiqué à l’aurore le lieu de son lever,
13 For taking hold of the ends of the earth, till the wicked are shaken from its surface?	13 lorsqu’elle conquiert la terre par les ailes, et met en fuite les méchants?
14 The earth is changed as is clay by the seal, and dyed as though it were a garment;	14 Le sol alors prend une couleur d’argile, et se teinte de rose comme un vêtement:
15 But from the wicked the light is withheld, and the arm of pride is shattered.	15 elle fait perdre aux méchants leur lumière, et le bras menaçant est brisé.
16 Have you entered into the sources of the sea, or walked about in the depths of the abyss?	16 Es-tu allé jusqu’aux sources des mers, as-tu parcouru le fond de l’océan?
17 Have the gates of death been shown to you, or have you seen the gates of darkness?	17 Est-ce qu’on t’a montré les portes de la Mort, ainsi que les gardiens du Pays des Ombres?
18 Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell me, if you know all:	18 As-tu quelque idée de l’étendue du monde? Raconte, puisque tu as tout vu.
19 Which is the way to the dwelling place of light, and where is the abode of darkness,	19 Où prend-on le chemin du palais de la lumière, et les ténèbres, viennent-elles de quelque endroit?
20 That you may take them to their boundaries and set them on their homeward paths?	20 Si tu sais aller jusqu’à leur maison, peut-être pourrais-tu les reconduire chez elles?
21 You know, because you were born before them, and the number of your years is great!	21 Tu le sais, bien sûr, tu es né avant elles, tu as beaucoup, beaucoup d’années!
22 Have you entered the storehouse of the snow, and seen the treasury of the hail	22 Et les réserves de neige, y es-tu allé? As-tu visité les dépôts de la grêle
23 Which I have reserved for times of stress, for the days of war and of battle?	23 que je tiens en réserve pour les temps difficiles, pour les jours de rencontre et de guerre?
24 Which way to the parting of the winds, whence the east wind spreads over the earth?	24 D’où sort, d’où se diffuse la lumière, et d’où, le vent qui de l’orient balaye la terre?
25 Who has laid out a channel for the downpour and for the thunderstorm a path	25 Qui ouvre un passage aux averses de l’orage, un chemin aux grondements du tonnerre,
26 To bring rain to no man's land, the unpeopled wilderness;	26 amenant la pluie sur les terres sans hommes, sur le désert où nul ne s’arrête,
27 To enrich the waste and desolate ground till the desert blooms with verdure?	27 irriguant un sol aride et désolé, pour que germe sur la steppe l’herbe verte?
28 Has the rain a father; or who has begotten the drops of dew?	28 La pluie a-t-elle un père? Qui engendre les gouttes de rosée?
29 Out of whose womb comes the ice, and who gives the hoarfrost its birth in the skies,	29 Et la glace, est-elle sortie d’un sein maternel? Qui enfante le givre des cieux,
30 When the waters lie covered as though with stone that holds captive the surface of the deep?	30 lorsque les eaux ont durci comme la pierre, et que se prend toute l’étendue des mers?
31 Have you fitted a curb to the Pleiades, or loosened the bonds of Orion?	31 Est-ce toi qui as noué les liens des Pléiades ou qui élargiras les chaînes d’Orion?
32 Can you bring forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or guide the Bear with its train?	32 Est-ce toi qui fais sortir la Couronne en son temps, et conduis la Grande Ourse avec ses petits?
33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens; can you put into effect their plan on the earth?	33 Connais-tu les lois astrales, fais-tu venir sur terre ce qui y est écrit?
34 Can you raise your voice among the clouds, or veil yourself in the waters of the storm?	34 Vas-tu crier bien fort vers les nuages, pour qu’un déluge tombe sur toi?
35 Can you send forth the lightnings on their way, or will they say to you, "Here we are"?	35 Les éclairs partent-ils parce que tu les lâches, est-ce à toi qu’ils diront: “Nous voici”?
36 Who puts wisdom in the heart, and gives the cock its understanding?	36 Qui a mis dans l’ibis la sagesse, et donné au coq de l’intelligence?
37 Who counts the clouds in his wisdom? Or who tilts the water jars of heaven	37 Qui est sage au point de compter les nuages? qui sait déverser les eaux de leurs réserves,
38 So that the dust of earth is fused into a mass and its clods made solid?	38 faisant que la poussière se fasse masse et que les mottes s’agglomèrent?
39 Do you hunt the prey for the lioness or appease the hunger of her cubs,	39 Est-ce toi qui rabats vers la lionne sa proie, et qui apaises la faim des lionceaux,
40 While they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in the thicket?	40 quand ils sont tapis dans leurs tanières ou se tiennent à l’aguet sous les buissons?
41 Who provides nourishment for the ravens when their young ones cry out to God, and they rove abroad without food?	41 Qui prépare au corbeau son manger, quand ses petits crient vers Dieu et s’agitent le ventre vide?
