NOVA VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Et ait David in corde suo: “ Aliquando incidam in uno die in manu Saul; nonne melius est ut fugiam et salver in terra Philisthinorum, ut desperet Saul cessetque me quaerere in cunctis finibus Israel? Fugiam ergo manus eius ”.1 But David said to himself: "I shall perish some day at the hand of Saul. I have no choice but to escape to the land of the Philistines; then Saul will give up his continual search for me throughout the land of Israel, and I shall be out of his reach."
Et surrexit David et abiit ipse et sescenti viri cum eo ad Achis filium Maoch regem Geth.2 Accordingly, David departed with his six hundred men and went over to Achish, son of Maoch, king of Gath.
Et habitavit David cum Achis in Geth ipse et viri eius unusquisque cum domo sua; David et duae uxores eius, Achinoam Iezrahelites et Abigail uxor Nabal de Carmel.3 David and his men lived in Gath with Achish; each one had his family, and David had his two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel.
Et nuntiatum est Saul quod fugisset David in Geth, et non addidit ultra ut quaereret eum.
When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.
Dixit autem David ad Achis: “ Si inveni gratiam in oculis tuis, detur mihi locus in una urbium regionis huius, ut habitem ibi. Cur enim manet servus tuus in civitate regis tecum? ”.5 David said to Achish: "If I meet with your approval, let me have a place to live in one of the country towns. Why should your servant live with you in the royal city?"
Dedit itaque ei Achis in die illa Siceleg; propter quam causam facta est Siceleg regum Iudae usque in diem hanc.6 That same day Achish gave him Ziklag, which has, therefore, belonged to the kings of Judah up to the present time.
Fuit autem numerus dierum, quibus habitavit David in regione Philisthinorum, annus et quattuor menses.
In all, David lived a year and four months in the country of the Philistines.
Et ascendit David et viri eius et agebant praedas de Gesuri et de Gerzi et de Amalecitis; hae enim gentes habitabant terram, quae est a Telem in via Sur et usque ad terram Aegypti.8 David and his men went up and made raids on the Geshurites, Girzites, and Amalekites-peoples living in the land between Telam, on the approach to Shur, and the land of Egypt.
Et percutiebat David omnem terram nec relinquebat viventem virum et mulierem; tollensque oves et boves et asinos et camelos et vestes revertebatur et veniebat ad Achis.9 In attacking the land David would not leave a man or woman alive, but would carry off sheep, oxen, asses, camels, and clothes. On his return he brought these to Achish,
Dicebat autem ei Achis: “ In quem irruistis hodie? ”. Respondebatque David: “ Contra Nageb Iudae vel contra Nageb Ierameel vel contra Nageb Ceni ”.10 who asked, "Whom did you raid this time?" And David answered, "The Negeb of Judah," or "The Negeb of Jerahmeel," or "The Negeb of the Kenites."
Viro et mulieri non parcebat David nec adducebat in Geth dicens: “ Ne forte loquantur adversum nos: “Haec fecit David” ”. Et hoc erat decretum illi omnibus diebus, quibus habitavit in regione Philisthinorum.11 But David would not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, fearing that they would betray him by saying, "This is what David did." This was his custom as long as he lived in the country of the Philistines.
Credidit ergo Achis David dicens: “ Valde odiosum se fecit populo suo Israel; erit
igitur mihi servus sempiternus ”.
And Achish trusted David, thinking, "He must certainly be detested by his people Israel. I shall have him as my vassal forever."
