1 Et oravit Anna et ait: “ Exsultavit cor meum in Do mino, exaltatum est cornu meum in Deo meo; dilatatum est os meum super inimicos meos, quoniam laetata sum in salutari tuo.	1 and as she worshiped the LORD, she said:
2 Non est sanctus ut est Dominus; neque enim est alius extra te, et non est fortis sicut Deus noster.	2 There is no Holy One like the LORD;
3 Nolite multiplicare loqui sublimia gloriantes. Recedant superba de ore vestro, quia Deus scientiarum Dominus est, et ab eo ponderantur actiones.	3 "Speak boastfully no longer,
4 Arcus fortium confractus est, et infirmi accincti sunt robore.	4 The bows of the mighty are broken,
5 Saturati prius pro pane se locaverunt, et famelici non eguerunt amplius. Sterilis peperit plurimos, et, quae multos habebat filios, emarcuit.	5 he well-fed hire themselves out for bread,
6 Dominus mortificat et vivificat, deducit ad infernum et reducit.	6 "The LORD puts to death and gives life;
7 Dominus pauperem facit et ditat, humiliat et sublevat;	7 The LORD makes poor and makes rich,
8 suscitat de pulvere egenum et de stercore elevat pauperem, ut sedeat cum principibus et solium gloriae teneat. Domini enim sunt cardines terrae, et posuit super eos orbem.	8 He raises the needy from the dust;
9 Pedes sanctorum suorum servabit, et impii in tenebris conticescent, quia non in fortitudine sua roborabitur vir.	9 He will guard the footsteps of his faithful ones,
10 Dominus conteret adversarios suos; super ipsos in caelis tonabit. Dominus iudicabit fines terrae et dabit imperium regi suo et sublimabit cornu christi sui ”.	10 the LORD'S foes shall be shattered.
11 Et abiit Elcana in Rama in domum suam. Puer autem erat minister in conspectu Domini ante faciem Heli sacerdotis.	11 When Elkanah returned home to Ramah, the child remained in the service of the LORD under the priest Eli.
12 Porro filii Heli filii Belial nescientes Dominum	12 Now the sons of Eli were wicked; they had respect neither for the LORD
13 neque officium sacerdotum ad populum, sed, quicumque immolasset victimam, veniebat puer sacerdotis, dum coquerentur carnes, et habebat fuscinulam tridentem in manu sua	13 nor for the priests' duties toward the people. When someone offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant would come with a three-pronged fork, while the meat was still boiling,
14 et mittebat eam in lebetem vel in caldariam aut in ollam sive in cacabum et omne, quod levabat fuscinula, tollebat sacerdos sibi. Sic faciebant universo Israeli venienti in Silo.	14 and would thrust it into the basin, kettle, caldron, or pot. Whatever the fork brought up, the priest would keep. That is how all the Israelites were treated who came to the sanctuary at Shiloh.
15 Etiam, antequam adolerent adipem, veniebat puer sacerdotis et dicebat immolanti: “ Da mihi carnem, ut coquam sacerdoti; non enim accipiet a te carnem coctam sed crudam ”.	15 In fact, even before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man offering the sacrifice, "Give me some meat to roast for the priest. He will not accept boiled meat from you, only raw meat."
16 Dicebatque illi immolans: “ Incendatur primum iuxta morem hodie adeps, et tolle tibi, quantumcumque desiderat anima tua ”. Qui respondens aiebat ei: “ Nequaquam; nunc enim dabis, alioquin tollam vi ”.	16 And if the man protested to him, "Let the fat be burned first as is the custom, then take whatever you wish," he would reply, "No, give it to me now, or else I will take it by force."
17 Erat ergo peccatum puerorum grande nimis coram Domino, quia detrahebant sacrificio Domini.	17 Thus the young men sinned grievously in the presence of the LORD; they treated the offerings to the LORD with disdain.
18 Samuel autem ministrabat ante faciem Domini, puer accinctus ephod lineo.	18 Meanwhile the boy Samuel, girt with a linen apron, was serving in the presence of the LORD.
19 Et tunicam parvam faciebat ei mater sua, quam afferebat ei singulis annis ascendens cum viro suo, ut immolaret hostiam annuam.	19 His mother used to make a little garment for him, which she would bring him each time she went up with her husband to offer the customary sacrifice.
20 Et benedicebat Heli Elcanae et uxori eius dicebatque: “ Reddat tibi Dominus semen de muliere hac pro petitione, quae postulata est pro Domino ”. Et abierunt in locum suum.	20 And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, as they were leaving for home. He would say, "May the LORD repay you with children from this woman for the gift she has made to the LORD!"
21 Visitavit ergo Dominus Annam, et concepit et peperit tres filios et duas filias. Et crevit puer Samuel apud Dominum.	21 The LORD favored Hannah so that she conceived and gave birth to three more sons and two daughters, while young Samuel grew up in the service of the LORD.
22 Heli autem erat senex valde et audivit omnia, quae faciebant filii sui universo Israeli et quomodo dormiebant cum mulieribus, quae ministrabant ad ostium tabernaculi,	22 When Eli was very old, he heard repeatedly how his sons were treating all Israel (and that they were having relations with the women serving at the entry of the meeting tent).
23 et dixit eis: “ Quare facitis res huiuscemodi, quas ego audio, res pessimas, ab omni populo?	23 So he said to them: "Why are you doing such things?
24 Nolite, filii mei; non enim est bona fama, quam ego audio, ut transgredi faciatis populum Domini.	24 No, my sons, you must not do these things! It is not a good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading about you.
25 Si peccaverit vir in virum, arbiter ei potest esse Deus; si autem in Dominum peccaverit vir, quis intercedet pro eo? ”. Et non audierunt vocem patris sui, quia voluit Dominus occidere eos.	25 If a man sins against another man, one can intercede for him with the LORD; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?" But they disregarded their father's warning, since the LORD had decided on their death.
26 Puer autem Samuel proficiebat atque crescebat et placebat tam Domino quam hominibus.	26 Meanwhile, young Samuel was growing in stature and in worth in the estimation of the LORD and of men.
27 Venit autem vir Dei ad Heli et ait ad eum: “ Haec dicit Dominus: Numquid non aperte revelatus sum domui patris tui, cum esset in Aegypto in domo pharaonis?	27 A man of God came to Eli and said to him: "This is what the LORD says: 'I went so far as to reveal myself to your father's family when they were in Egypt as slaves to the house of Pharaoh.
28 Et elegi eum ex omnibus tribubus Israel mihi in sacerdotem, ut ascenderet ad altare meum et adoleret mihi incensum et portaret ephod coram me; et dedi domui patris tui omnia de sacrificiis filiorum Israel.	28 I chose them out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priests, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear the ephod before me; and I assigned all the oblations of the Israelites to your father's family.
29 Quare calce abicitis victimam meam et munera mea, quae praecepi, ut offerrentur in templo, et magis honorasti filios tuos quam me, ut impinguaremini primitiis omnis sacrificii Israel populi mei?	29 Why do you keep a greedy eye on my sacrifices and on the offerings which I have prescribed? And why do you honor your sons in preference to me, fattening yourselves with the choicest part of every offering of my people Israel?'
30 Propterea ait Dominus, Deus Israel: Loquens locutus sum, ut domus tua et domus patris tui ministraret in conspectu meo usque in sempiternum. Nunc autem, dicit Dominus, absit hoc a me. Sed quicumque glorificaverit me, glorificabo eum; qui autem contemnunt me, erunt ignobiles.	30 This, therefore, is the oracle of the LORD, the God of Israel: 'I said in the past that your family and your father's family should minister in my presence forever. But now,' the LORD declares, 'away with this! for I will honor those who honor me, but those who spurn me shall be accursed.
31 Ecce dies veniunt, et praecidam brachium tuum et brachium domus patris tui, ut non sit senex in domo tua.	31 Yes, the time is coming when I will break your strength and the strength of your father's family, so that no man in your family shall reach old age.
32 Et videbis aemulum tuum in templo in universis prosperis Israel; et non erit senex in domo tua omnibus diebus.	32 You shall witness as a disappointed rival all the benefits enjoyed by Israel, but there shall never be an old man in your family.
33 Verumtamen non auferam penitus virum ex te ab altari meo; sed ut deficiant oculi tui, et tabescat anima tua, et pars magna domus tuae morietur, cum ad virilem aetatem venerit.	33 I will permit some of your family to remain at my altar, to wear out their eyes in consuming greed; but the rest of the men of your family shall die by the sword.
34 Hoc autem erit tibi signum, quod venturum est duobus filiis tuis Ophni et Phinees: in die uno morientur ambo.	34 You shall have a sign in what will happen to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas: both shall die on the same day.
35 Et suscitabo mihi sacerdotem fidelem, qui iuxta cor meum et animam meam faciat; et aedificabo ei domum fidelem, et ambulabit coram christo meo cunctis diebus.	35 I will choose a faithful priest who shall do what I have in heart and mind. I will establish a lasting house for him which shall function in the presence of my anointed forever.
36 Futurum est autem ut quicumque remanserit in domo tua, veniat, ut procidat ante illum pro nummo argenteo et torta panis dicatque: “Dimitte me, obsecro, ad unam partem sacerdotalem, ut comedam buccellam panis” ”.	36 Then whoever is left of your family will come to grovel before him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread, and will say: Appoint me, I beg you, to a priestly function, that I may have a morsel of bread to eat.'"
