NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Iosue senex provectaeque aetatis erat, et dixit Dominus ad eum: “ Senuisti et longaevus es; terraque latissima adhuc superest, quae necdum occupata est.1 Now Joshua had grown old and advanced in years. Yahweh said to him, 'You are now old andadvanced in years, yet there is stil a great deal of territory left to be taken possession of.
Omnis videlicet Galilaea, regio Philisthim et universa Gesuri,2 This is al the territory left: 'Al the districts of the Philistines and the whole country of the Geshurites;
a fluvio Sihor, qui est ad orientem Aegypti, usque ad terminos Accaron contra aquilonem, terra Chananaea, quae in quinque principes Philisthim dividitur, Gazaeos et Azotios, Ascalonitas, Getthaeos et Accaronitas ac Hevaei3 from the Shihor, facing Egypt, to the frontier of Ekron in the north, is reckoned as Canaanite territory.The five rulers of the Philistines have their seats at Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron, respectively; theAvvites are in
meridie; et omnis terra Chanaan de Ara Sidoniorum usque Apheca et terminos Amorraei;4 the south. The entire territory of the Canaanites, and Mearah which belongs to the Sidonians, as far asAphekah and as far as the frontier of the Amorites;
et terra Gibliorum et omnis Libanus in oriente a Baalgad sub monte Hermon usque ad introitum Emath,5 and then the country of the Gebalites with the entire Lebanon eastwards from Baal-Gad at the foot ofMount Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.
omnes, qui habitant in monte a Libano usque ad Maserephoth in occidente, universi Sidonii. Ego sum qui delebo eos a facie filiorum Israel. Sorte tantum distribue terram Israel in hereditatem, sicut praecepi tibi.6 'All who live in the highlands from the Lebanon to Misrephoth in the west -- al the Sidonians -- I myselfshall dispossess before the Israelites. Al you have to do is to distribute the territory as a heritage for theIsraelites as I have ordered you.
Et nunc divide terram hanc in possessionem novem tribubus et dimidiae tribui Manasse ”.
The time has come to divide this territory as a heritage between the nine tribes and the half-tribe ofManasseh: from the Jordan as far as the Great Sea in the west, you must give it them; the Great Sea wil betheir limit.'
Cum qua Ruben et Gad possederunt terram, quam tradidit eis Moyses famulus Domini trans fluenta Iordanis ad orientalem plagam:8 As regards the other half-tribe of Manasseh, this and the Reubenites and Gadites had already receivedtheir heritage, given them by Moses on the further, eastern side of the Jordan, the one which Moses, servant ofYahweh, had already given them:
ab Aroer, quae sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et civitate in vallis medio, universaque campestria Medaba usque Dibon;9 The country onwards from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, with the town in the bottom of theval ey and the entire tableland from Medeba to Dibon;
et cunctas civitates Sehon regis Amorraei, qui regnavit in Hesebon, usque ad terminos filiorum Ammon;10 al the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had reigned in Heshbon, to the frontier of theAmmonites;
et Galaad ac terminos Gesuri et Maachathi omnemque montem Hermon et universam Basan usque Salcha,11 then Gilead and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites with the whole Hermon range and thewhole of Bashan as far as Salecah;
omne regnum Og in Basan, qui regnavit in Astharoth et Edrai — ipse fuit de reliquiis Raphaim C; percussitque eos Moyses atque delevit.12 and in Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei, and was the lastof the survivors of the Rephaim. Moses had conquered and dispossessed these two kings.
Non autem disperdiderunt filii Israel Gesuri et Maachathi, et habitaverunt in medio Israel usque in praesentem diem.
The Israelites did not, however, dispossess either the Geshurites or the Maacathites, hence Geshurand Maacah survive inside Israel even today.
Tribui tantum Levi non dedit possessionem, sed sacrificia Domini, Dei Israel: ipsa est eius hereditas, sicut locutus est illi.
To the tribe of Levi alone no heritage was given; Yahweh, God of Israel, was his heritage, as he hadtold him.
Dedit ergo Moyses possessionem tribui filiorum Ruben iuxta cognationes suas.15 Moses had given the tribe of the sons of Reuben a share by clans.
Fuitque terminus eorum ab Aroer, quae sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et a civitate in valle eiusdem torrentis media, et universa planities usque Medaba,16 Thus, their territory was the entire tableland from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, with the townin the bottom of the val ey, as far as Medeba,
Hesebon cunctaque oppida eius, quae sunt in campestribus: Dibon et Bamothbaal et Bethbaalmeon17 Heshbon with all the towns on the tableland: Dibon, Bamoth-Baal, Beth-Baal-Meon,
et Iasa et Cademoth et Mephaath,18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
Cariathaim et Sabama et Serethsahar in monte convallis,19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah and, in the highlands of the Arabah, Zereth-Shahar;
Bethphegor et declivia Phasga et Bethiesimoth20 Beth-Peor, the watered foothills of Mount Pisgah, Beth-ha-Jeshimoth,
et omnes urbes campestres universumque regnum Sehon regis Amorraei, qui regnavit in Hesebon, quem percussit Moyses, ipsum et principes Madian, Evi et Recem et Sur et Hur et Rebe, duces Sehon habitatores terrae.21 al the towns on the tableland and the entire kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had reignedin Heshbon; he had been defeated by Moses, and with him the princes of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur andReba, vassals of Sihon, formerly living in the country.
Et Balaam filium Beor hariolum occiderunt filii Israel gladio cum ceteris interfectis.22 As regards Balaam son of Beor, the soothsayer, the Israelites had put him to the sword with thosewhom they had kil ed.
Factusque est terminus filiorum Ruben Iordanis fluvius. Haec est possessio Rubenitarum per cognationes suas, urbes et viculi earum.
The boundary of the Reubenites was the Jordan and its territory. Such was the heritage of the sons ofReuben, by clans, with the towns and vil ages belonging to them.
Deditque Moyses tribui Gad, filiis Gad, per cognationes suas possessionem, cuius hic est24 Moses had given the tribe of Gad, the sons of Gad, a share by clans.
terminus: Iazer et omnes civitates Galaad dimidiaque pars terrae filiorum Ammon usque ad Aroer, quae est contra Rabba;25 Their territory was Jazer, al the towns of Gilead, half the country of the Ammonites as far as Aroerfacing Rabbah,
et ab Hesebon usque Ramothmaspha et Betonim et a Mahanaim usque ad terminos Lodabar,26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-Mizpeh and Betonim; from Mahanaim as far as the territory of Lo-Debar,
in valle quoque Betharan et Bethnemra et Succoth et Saphon, reliqua pars regni Sehon regis Hesebon; Iordanis et terminus usque ad extremam partem maris Chenereth trans Iordanem ad orientalem plagam.27 and in the val ey: Beth-Haram, Beth-Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon -- the rest of the kingdom of Sihonking of Heshbon -- the Jordan and the territory running to the tip of the Sea of Chinneroth, on the further, easternside of the Jordan.
Haec est possessio filiorum Gad per familias suas, civitates et villae earum.
Such was the heritage of the sons of Gad, by clans, with their towns and vil ages belonging to them.
Dedit Moyses et dimidiae tribui filiorum Manasse, iuxta cognationes suas possessionem:29 Moses had given the half-tribe of Manasseh a share by clans.
Manasse, a Mahanaim universam Basan, cunctum regnum Og regis Basan omnesque vicos Iair, qui sunt in Basan, sexaginta oppida;30 Their territory, starting from Mahanaim, was the whole of Bashan, the entire kingdom of Og king ofBashan, all the Encampments of Jair in Bashan: sixty towns.
et dimidiam partem Galaad et Astharoth et Edrai, urbes regni Og in Basan, filiis Machir filii Manasse, dimidiae parti filiorum Machir, iuxta cognationes suas.
Half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the royal cities of Og in Bashan, were al otted to the sons ofMachir son of Manasseh, to half of the sons of Machir, by clans.
Hanc possessionem divisit Moyses in campestribus Moab trans Iordanem contra Iericho ad orientalem plagam.32 This was what Moses had conferred in heritage on the Plains of Moab on the further, eastern side ofthe Jordan opposite Jericho.
Tribui autem Levi non dedit possessionem, quoniam Dominus, Deus Israel, ipse est possessio eius, ut locutus est illi.
To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses gave no heritage; Yahweh, God of Israel, was his heritage, ashe had told him.
