NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et statuit Dominus verbum suum, quod locutus est super nos et superiudices nostros, qui iudicabant Israel, et super reges nostros et superprincipes nostros et super omnem hominem Israel et Iudae,1 And so the Lord has carried out the sentence which he passed on us, on our judges who governedIsrael, on our kings and leaders and on the people of Israel and of Judah;
ut induceret supernos mala magna, quae non sunt facta sub omni caelo, secundum quae fecit inIerusalem, secundum ea quae scripta sunt in lege Moysi,2 what he did to Jerusalem has never been paral eled under the wide heavens -- in conformity with whatwas written in the Law of Moses;
comedere nosunumquemque carnes filii sui et unumquemque carnes filiae suae.3 we were each reduced to eating the flesh of our own sons and daughters.
Et dedit illossubditos omnibus regnis, quae in circuitu nostro sunt, in opprobrium et indesolationem in omnibus populis, qui in circuitu nostro sunt, quo dispersitillos Dominus,4 Furthermore, he has handed them over into the power of all the kingdoms that surround us, to be thecontempt and execration of all the neighbouring peoples among whom the Lord scattered them.
et facti sunt subtus et non supra, quia peccavimus Deo nostronon oboediendo voci eius.5 Instead of being masters, they found themselves enslaved, because we had sinned against the Lord ourGod by not listening to his voice.
Domino Deo nostro iustitia, nobis autem et patribusnostris confusio faciei, sicut hic dies;6 Saving justice is the Lord's; we and our ancestors have only the look of shame we bear today.
quae locutus est Dominus super nos,omnia mala haec venerunt super nos,7 Al those disasters which the Lord pronounced against us have now befallen us.
et non sumus deprecati faciem Domini, utaverteremur unusquisque a cogitationibus cordis nostri pessimi.8 And yet we have not tried to win the favour of the Lord by each of us renouncing the dictates of our ownwicked heart;
Et vigilavitDominus super mala et induxit ea super nos, quia iustus est Dominus in omnibusoperibus suis, quae mandavit nobis.9 so the Lord has been alert to our misdeeds and has brought disaster down on us, since the Lord isupright in everything he had commanded us to do,
Et non oboedivimus voci eius, utambularemus in praeceptis Domini, quae dedit ante faciem nostram.10 and we have not listened to his voice so as to fol ow the commandments which the Lord had ordainedfor us.
Et nunc, Domine, Deus Israel, qui eduxisti populum tuum de terra Aegypti inmanu valida, in signis et portentis et in virtute magna et in brachio excelso etfecisti tibi nomen, sicut hic dies,11 And now, Lord, God of Israel, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand, with signs andwonders, with great power and with outstretched arm, to win yourself a name such as you have today,
peccavimus, impie fecimus, inique egimus,Domine Deus noster, in omnibus iustificationibus tuis.12 we have sinned, we have committed sacrilege; Lord our God, we have broken al your precepts.
Avertatur ira tua anobis, quia derelicti sumus pauci in gentibus, quo dispersisti nos.13 Let your anger turn from us since we are no more than a little remnant among the nations where youhave dispersed us.
Exaudi,Domine, orationem nostram et deprecationem nostram et eripe nos propter te et danobis gratiam ante faciem eorum, qui nos abduxerunt,14 Listen, Lord, to our prayers and our entreaties; deliver us for your own sake and let us win the favour ofthe people who have deported us,
ut sciat omnis terraquia tu es Dominus Deus noster, et quia nomen tuum invocatum est super Israel etsuper genus eius.15 so that the whole world may know that you are the Lord our God, since Israel and his descendantsbear your name.
Domine, prospice de domo sancta tua et attende in nos;inclina, Domine, aurem tuam et audi.16 Look down, Lord, from your holy dwel ing-place and think of us, bow your ear and listen,
Aperi, Domine, oculos tuos et vide, quianon mortui, qui in inferno sunt, quorum spiritus ablatus est a visceribus eorum,dabunt gloriam et iustificationem Domino,17 open your eyes, Lord, and look; the dead down in Sheol, whose breath has been taken from theirbodies, are not the ones to give glory and due recognition to the Lord;
sed anima, quae tristis est supermagnitudinem, quae incedit curva et infirma, et oculi deficientes et animaesuriens dabunt tibi gloriam et iustitiam, Domine.18 whoever is overcome with affliction, who goes along bowed down and frail, with failing eyes andhungering soul, that is the one to give you glory and due recognition, Lord.
Quia non iniustificationibus patrum nostrorum et regum nostrorum nos prosternimus precesnostras ante faciem tuam, Domine Deus noster;19 We do not rely on the merits of our ancestors and of our kings to offer you our humble plea, Lord ourGod.
quia immisisti indignationemtuam et iram tuam super nos, sicut locutus es in manibus puerorum tuorumprophetarum dicens:20 No, you have sent down your anger and your fury on us, as you threatened through your servants theprophets when they said,
“Sic dicit Dominus: Inclinate umerum vestrum et serviteregi Babylonis et sedebitis super terram, quam dedi patribus vestris.21 'The Lord says this: Bend your necks and serve the king of Babylon, and you wil remain in the countrywhich I gave to your ancestors.
Et sinon audieritis vocem Domini, ut serviatis regi Babylonis, deficere faciam acivitatibus Iudae et a plateis Ierusalem22 But if you do not listen to the voice of the Lord and serve the king of Babylon
vocem laetitiae et vocemiucunditatis et vocem sponsi et vocem sponsae, et erit omnis terra sine vestigioab inhabitantibus”.23 then I shal silence the shouts of rejoicing and mirth and the voices of bridegroom and bride in thetowns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, and the whole country will be reduced to desert, with noinhabitants.'
Et non audivimus vocem tuam, ut serviremus regiBabylonis; et statuisti verba tua, quae locutus es in manibus puerorum tuorumprophetarum, ut eicerentur ossa regum nostrorum et ossa patrum nostrorum de locosuo;24 But we would not listen to your voice and serve the king of Babylon, and so you carried out what youhad threatened through your servants the prophets: that the bones of our kings and of our ancestors would bedragged from their resting places.
et ecce sunt proiecta in calore diei et in gelu noctis, et mortui suntin doloribus malis, in fame et in gladio et in peste.25 They were indeed tossed out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night. And people died indreadful agony, from famine, sword and plague.
Et posuisti domum,super quam invocatum est nomen tuum, sicut hic dies propter malitiam domusIsrael et domus Iudae.26 And so, because of the wickedness of the House of Israel and the House of Judah, you have madethis House, that bears your name, what it is today.
Et fecisti in nos, Domine Deus noster, secundum omnemmoderationem tuam et secundum omnem miserationem tuam magnam,27 And yet, Lord our God, you have treated us in a way worthy of al your goodness and boundlesstenderness,
sicut locutuses in manu pueri tui Moysi in die, quo mandasti ei scribere legem tuam coramfiliis Israel28 just as you had promised through your servant Moses, the day you told him to write your Law in thepresence of the Israelites, and said,
dicens: “Si non audieritis vocem meam, profecto turba haecmagna et multa convertetur in parvam inter gentes, quo eos dispergam;29 'If you do not listen to my voice, this great and innumerable multitude wil certainly be reduced to a tinyfew among the nations where I shal scatter them-
quiascivi quod me non audient, quia populus est dura cervice. Et convertentur ad corsuum in terra captivitatis suae30 for I knew that, being an obstinate people, they would not listen to me. But in the country of their exile,they will come to themselves
et scient quia ego Dominus Deus illorum, etdabo illis cor intellegens et aures audientes,31 and acknowledge that I am the Lord their God. I shal give them a heart and an attentive ear,
et laudabunt me in terracaptivitatis suae et memores erunt nominis mei;32 and they will sing my praises in the country of their exile, they will remember my name;
et avertent se a dorso suoduro et a nequissimis adinventionibus suis, quia memores erunt viae patrumsuorum, qui peccaverunt coram Domino.33 they wil stop being obstinate and, remembering what became of their ancestors who sinned before theLord, will turn from their evil deeds.
Et convertam eos in terram, quam iuravipatribus eorum, Abraham, Isaac et Iacob; et possidebunt eam et multiplicabo eos,et non minorabuntur;34 Then I shal bring them back to the country which I promised on oath to their ancestors Abraham, Isaacand Jacob, and make them masters in it. I shal make their numbers grow; they wil not dwindle again.
et statuam illis testamentum aeternum, ut sim illis inDeum, et ipsi erunt mihi in populum, et ultra iam non movebo populum meum Israela terra, quam dedi illis”.
And I shal make an everlasting covenant with them; so that I am their God and they are my people.And never again shal I drive my people Israel out of the country which I have given them.'
