1 Allora Giosuè convocò i Rubeniti, i Gaditi e metà della tribù di Manàsse	1 In the same time, Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the one half tribe of Manasseh.
2 e disse loro: "Voi avete osservato quanto Mosè, servo del Signore, vi aveva ordinato e avete obbedito alla mia voce, in tutto quello che io vi ho comandato.	2 And he said to them: “You have done all that Moses, the servant of the Lord, instructed you. You have also obeyed me in all things.
3 Non avete abbandonato i vostri fratelli durante questo lungo tempo fino ad oggi e avete osservato il comando del Signore vostro Dio.	3 Neither have you forsaken your brothers during this long time, even to the present day, keeping the orders of the Lord your God.
4 Ora che il Signore vostro Dio ha dato tranquillità ai vostri fratelli, come aveva loro promesso, tornate e andate alle vostre tende, nel paese che vi appartiene, e che Mosè, servo del Signore, vi ha assegnato oltre il Giordano.	4 Therefore, since the Lord your God has given your brothers peace and quiet, just as he promised: return, and go into your tents and into the land of your possession, which Moses, the servant of the Lord, delivered to you beyond the Jordan.
5 Soltanto abbiate gran cura di eseguire i comandi e la legge che Mosè, servo del Signore, vi ha dato, amando il Signore vostro Dio, camminando in tutte le sue vie, osservando i suoi comandi, restando fedeli a lui e servendolo con tutto il cuore e con tutta l'anima".	5 And may you continue to observe attentively, and to work to fulfill, the commandment and the law that Moses, the servant of the Lord, instructed to you, so that you may love the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways, and keep all his commandments, and cling to him, and serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
6 Poi Giosuè li benedisse e li congedò ed essi tornarono alle loro tende.	6 And Joshua blessed them, and he sent them away. And they returned to their tents.
7 Mosè aveva dato a metà della tribù di Manàsse un possesso in Basan e Giosuè diede all'altra metà un possesso tra i loro fratelli, di qua del Giordano, a occidente. Quando Giosuè li rimandò alle loro tende e li benedisse,	7 Now to the one half tribe of Manasseh, Moses had given a possession in Bashan. And therefore, to the one half that was left over, Joshua gave a lot among the remainder of their brothers across the Jordan, in the western region. And when he had blessed them and dismissed them to their tents,
8 aggiunse: "Voi tornate alle vostre tende con grandi ricchezze, con bestiame molto numeroso, con argento, oro, rame, ferro e con grande quantità di vesti; dividete con i vostri fratelli il bottino, tolto ai vostri nemici".	8 he said to them: “Return to your settlements with much substance and wealth, with silver and gold, brass and iron, and a multitude of garments. Divide the spoils of your enemies with your brothers.”
9 I figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse dunque tornarono, dopo aver lasciato gli Israeliti a Silo, nel paese di Canaan, per andare nel paese di Gàlaad, il paese di loro proprietà, che avevano ricevuto in possesso, in forza del comando del Signore, per mezzo di Mosè.	9 And the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the one half tribe of Manasseh returned, and they went away from the sons of Israel at Shiloh, which is situated in Canaan, so that they might enter into Gilead, the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to the order of the Lord, by the hand of Moses.
10 Quando furono giunti alle Curve del Giordano, che sono nel paese di Canaan, i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse vi costruirono un altare, presso il Giordano: un altare di forma grandiosa.	10 And when they had arrived at the hills of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, they built an altar of immense magnitude beside the Jordan.
11 Gli Israeliti udirono che si diceva: "Ecco i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse hanno costruito un altare di fronte al paese di Canaan, alle Curve del Giordano, dalla parte degli Israeliti".	11 And when the sons of Israel had heard of it, and certain messengers had reported to them that the sons of Reuben, and of Gad, and of the one half tribe of Manasseh had built an altar in the land of Canaan, upon the hills of the Jordan, facing the sons of Israel,
12 Quando gli Israeliti seppero questo, tutta la loro comunità si riunì a Silo per muover loro guerra.	12 they all assembled at Shiloh, so that they might go up and battle against them.
13 Gli Israeliti mandarono ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse nel paese di Gàlaad, Pincas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro,	13 And in the interim, they sent to them, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the priest,
14 e con lui dieci capi, un capo per ciascun casato paterno di tutte le tribù d'Israele:	14 and ten leaders with him, one from each tribe.
15 tutti erano capi di un casato paterno fra i gruppi di migliaia d'Israele; essi andarono dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e da metà della tribù di Manàsse nel paese di Gàlaad e dissero loro:	15 And they went to the sons of Reuben, and of Gad, and of the one half tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them:
16 "Dice tutta la comunità del Signore: Che è questa infedeltà, che avete commessa contro il Dio d'Israele, desistendo oggi dal seguire il Signore, costruendovi un altare per ribellarvi oggi al Signore?	16 “All the people of the Lord declare this: What is this transgression? Why have you forsaken the Lord, the God of Israel, by building a sacrilegious altar, and by withdrawing from the worship of him?
17 Non ci basta l'iniquità di Peor, della quale non ci siamo ancora purificati oggi e che attirò quel flagello sulla comunità del Signore?	17 Is it a small thing to you that you have sinned with Baal of Peor, and that the stain of that crime continues among us, even to the present day? And many of the people have fallen.
18 Voi oggi desistete dal seguire il Signore! Poiché oggi vi siete ribellati al Signore, domani egli si adirerà contro tutta la comunità d'Israele.	18 And yet you have forsaken the Lord today, and tomorrow his wrath will rage against all of Israel.
19 Se ritenete immondo il paese che possedete, ebbene, passate nel paese che è possesso del Signore, dove è stabilita la Dimora del Signore, e stabilitevi in mezzo a noi; ma non ribellatevi al Signore e non fate di noi dei ribelli, costruendovi un altare oltre l'altare del Signore nostro Dio.	19 But if you consider the land of your possession to be unclean, cross over to the land in which is the tabernacle of the Lord, and live among us. But do not withdraw from the Lord, and from our fellowship, by building an altar contrary to the altar of the Lord our God.
20 Quando Acan figlio di Zerach commise un'infedeltà riguardo allo sterminio, non venne forse l'ira del Signore su tutta la comunità d'Israele sebbene fosse un individuo solo? Non dovette egli morire per la sua colpa?".	20 Did not Achan, the son of Zerah, go against the commandment of the Lord, and so his wrath was laid over all the people of Israel? And he was only one man. If only he had perished in his wickedness alone!”
21 Allora i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse risposero e dissero ai capi dei gruppi di migliaia d'Israele:	21 And the sons of Reuben, and of Gad, and of the one half tribe of Manasseh responded to the leaders of the delegation from Israel:
22 "Dio, Dio, Signore! Dio, Dio, Signore! Lui lo sa, ma anche Israele lo sappia. Se abbiamo agito per ribellione o per infedeltà verso il Signore, che Egli non ci salvi oggi!	22 “The Lord, the almighty God, the Lord, the almighty God, he knows, and also Israel will understand: If we have constructed this altar with intent of transgression, let him not preserve us, but instead punish us immediately.
23 Se abbiamo costruito un altare per desistere dal seguire il Signore; se è stato per offrire su di esso olocausti od oblazioni e per fare su di esso sacrifici di comunione, il Signore stesso ce ne chieda conto!	23 And if we have acted with a mind so that we might present upon it holocausts, and sacrifice, and victims of peace offerings, let him inquire and judge.
24 In verità l'abbiamo fatto preoccupati di questo: pensando cioè che in avvenire i vostri figli potessero dire ai nostri figli: Che avete in comune voi con il Signore Dio d'Israele?	24 Instead, we have acted with this greater thought and design, that we would say: Tomorrow your sons will say to our sons: ‘What is there between you and the Lord, the God of Israel?
25 Il Signore ha posto il Giordano come confine tra noi e voi, figli di Ruben e figli di Gad; voi non avete parte alcuna con il Signore! Così i vostri figli farebbero desistere i nostri figli dal temere il Signore.	25 The Lord has stationed the river Jordan as the border between us and you, O sons of Reuben, O sons of Gad. And therefore, you have no part in the Lord.’ And by this occasion, your sons would turn away our sons from the fear of the Lord. And so we sought something better,
26 Perciò abbiamo detto: Costruiamo un altare, non per olocausti, né per sacrifici,	26 and we said: Let us build us an altar, not for holocausts, and not to offer victims,
27 ma perché sia testimonio fra noi e voi e fra i nostri discendenti dopo di noi, dimostrando che vogliamo servire al Signore dinanzi a lui, con i nostri olocausti, con le nostre vittime e con i nostri sacrifici di comunione. Così i vostri figli non potranno un giorno dire ai nostri figli: Voi non avete parte alcuna con il Signore.	27 but as a testimony between us and you, and between our descendents and your progeny, so that we may serve the Lord, and so that it may be our right to offer holocausts, and victims, and peace offerings, and so that tomorrow your sons may not say to our sons: ‘You have no part in the Lord.’
28 Abbiamo detto: Se in avvenire essi diranno questo a noi o ai nostri discendenti, noi risponderemo: Guardate la forma dell'altare del Signore, che i nostri padri fecero, non per olocausti, né per sacrifici, ma perché fosse di testimonio fra noi e voi.	28 And if they decide to say this, they shall respond to them: ‘Behold, the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for holocausts, and not for sacrifice, but instead as a testimony between us and you.’
29 Lungi da noi l'idea di ribellarci al Signore e di desistere dal seguire il Signore, costruendo un altare per olocausti, per oblazioni o per sacrifici, oltre l'altare del Signore nostro Dio, che è davanti alla sua Dimora!".	29 May this wickedness be far from us, such that we would withdraw from the Lord, and would forsake his paths, by constructing an altar to offer holocausts, and sacrifices, and victims, contrary to the altar of the Lord our God, which was built before his tabernacle.”
30 Quando Pincas e i capi della comunità, i capi dei gruppi di migliaia d'Israele che erano con lui, udirono le parole dette dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e dai figli di Manàsse, ne rimasero soddisfatti.	30 And when Phinehas, the priest, and the leaders of the delegation who were with him, had heard this, they were pleased. And they accepted very willingly the words of the sons of Reuben, and of Gad, and of the one half tribe of Manasseh.
31 Pincas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro, disse ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e ai figli di Manàsse: "Oggi riconosciamo che il Signore è in mezzo a noi, poiché non avete commesso questa infedeltà verso il Signore; così avete preservato gli Israeliti dal castigo del Signore".	31 And Phinehas, the priest, the son of Eleazar, said to them: “Now we know that the Lord is with us. For you are a stranger to this transgression. And so you have freed the sons of Israel from the hand of the Lord.”
32 Pincas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro, e i capi lasciarono i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e tornarono dal paese di Gàlaad al paese di Canaan presso gli Israeliti, ai quali riferirono l'accaduto.	32 And he returned with the leaders, from the sons of Reuben and of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, into the parts of Canaan, to the sons of Israel. And he reported to them.
33 La cosa piacque agli Israeliti, i quali benedissero Dio e non parlarono più di muover guerra ai figli di Ruben e di Gad, per devastare il paese che essi abitavano.	33 And the word pleased all who heard it. And the sons of Israel praised God, and they no longer said that they would go up against them, and fight, and destroy the land of their possession.
34 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad chiamarono quell'altare Testimonio perché dissero: "Esso è testimonio fra di noi che il Signore è Dio".	34 And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad called the altar that they had built: Our testimony that the Lord himself is God.
