1 Allora Giosuè convocò i Rubeniti, i Gaditi e metà della tribù di Manàsse	1 At the same time Josue called the Rubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasses,
2 e disse loro: "Voi avete osservato quanto Mosè, servo del Signore, vi aveva ordinato e avete obbedito alla mia voce, in tutto quello che io vi ho comandato.	2 And said to them: You have done all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: you have also obeyed me in all things,
3 Non avete abbandonato i vostri fratelli durante questo lungo tempo fino ad oggi e avete osservato il comando del Signore vostro Dio.	3 Neither have you left your brethren this long time, until this present day, keeping the commandment of the Lord your God.
4 Ora che il Signore vostro Dio ha dato tranquillità ai vostri fratelli, come aveva loro promesso, tornate e andate alle vostre tende, nel paese che vi appartiene, e che Mosè, servo del Signore, vi ha assegnato oltre il Giordano.	4 Therefore as the Lord your God hath given your brethren rest and peace, as he promised: return, and go to your dwellings, and to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you beyond the Jordan:
5 Soltanto abbiate gran cura di eseguire i comandi e la legge che Mosè, servo del Signore, vi ha dato, amando il Signore vostro Dio, camminando in tutte le sue vie, osservando i suoi comandi, restando fedeli a lui e servendolo con tutto il cuore e con tutta l'anima".	5 Yet so that you observe attentively, and in work fulfil the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: that you love the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways, and keep all his commandments, and cleave to him, and serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul.
6 Poi Giosuè li benedisse e li congedò ed essi tornarono alle loro tende.	6 And Josue blessed them, and sent them away, and they returned to their dwellings.
7 Mosè aveva dato a metà della tribù di Manàsse un possesso in Basan e Giosuè diede all'altra metà un possesso tra i loro fratelli, di qua del Giordano, a occidente. Quando Giosuè li rimandò alle loro tende e li benedisse,	7 Now to half the tribe of Manasses, Moses had given a possession in Basan: and therefore to the half that remained, Josue gave a lot among the rest of their brethren beyond the Jordan to the west. And when he sent them away to their dwellings and had blessed them,
8 aggiunse: "Voi tornate alle vostre tende con grandi ricchezze, con bestiame molto numeroso, con argento, oro, rame, ferro e con grande quantità di vesti; dividete con i vostri fratelli il bottino, tolto ai vostri nemici".	8 He said to them : With much substance and riches, you return to your settlements, with silver and gold, brass and iron, and variety of raiment: divide the prey of your enemies with your brethren.
9 I figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse dunque tornarono, dopo aver lasciato gli Israeliti a Silo, nel paese di Canaan, per andare nel paese di Gàlaad, il paese di loro proprietà, che avevano ricevuto in possesso, in forza del comando del Signore, per mezzo di Mosè.	9 So the children of Ruben, and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses returned, and parted from the children of Israel in Silo, which is in Chanaan, to go into Galaad the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
10 Quando furono giunti alle Curve del Giordano, che sono nel paese di Canaan, i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse vi costruirono un altare, presso il Giordano: un altare di forma grandiosa.	10 And when they were come to the banks of the Jordan, in the land of Chanaan, they built an altar immensely great near the Jordan.
11 Gli Israeliti udirono che si diceva: "Ecco i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse hanno costruito un altare di fronte al paese di Canaan, alle Curve del Giordano, dalla parte degli Israeliti".	11 And when the children of Israel had heard of it, and certain messengers had brought them an account that the children of Ruben, and of Cad, and the half tribe of Manasses had built an altar in the land of Chanaan, upon the banks of the Jordan, over against the children of Israel:
12 Quando gli Israeliti seppero questo, tutta la loro comunità si riunì a Silo per muover loro guerra.	12 They all assembled in Silo, to go up and fight against them.
13 Gli Israeliti mandarono ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse nel paese di Gàlaad, Pincas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro,	13 And in the mean time they sent to them into the land of Galaad, Phinees the son of Eleazar the priest,
14 e con lui dieci capi, un capo per ciascun casato paterno di tutte le tribù d'Israele:	14 And ten princes with him, one of every tribe.
15 tutti erano capi di un casato paterno fra i gruppi di migliaia d'Israele; essi andarono dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e da metà della tribù di Manàsse nel paese di Gàlaad e dissero loro:	15 Who came to the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses, into the land of Galaad, and said to them:
16 "Dice tutta la comunità del Signore: Che è questa infedeltà, che avete commessa contro il Dio d'Israele, desistendo oggi dal seguire il Signore, costruendovi un altare per ribellarvi oggi al Signore?	16 Thus saith all the people of the Lord: What meaneth this transgression? Why have you forsaken the Lord the God of Israel, building a sacrilegious altar, and revolting from the worship of him?
17 Non ci basta l'iniquità di Peor, della quale non ci siamo ancora purificati oggi e che attirò quel flagello sulla comunità del Signore?	17 Is it a small thing to you that you sinned with Beelphegor, and the stain of that crime remaineth in us to this day? and many of the people perished.
18 Voi oggi desistete dal seguire il Signore! Poiché oggi vi siete ribellati al Signore, domani egli si adirerà contro tutta la comunità d'Israele.	18 And you have forsaken the Lord to day, and to morrow his wrath will rage against all Israel.
19 Se ritenete immondo il paese che possedete, ebbene, passate nel paese che è possesso del Signore, dove è stabilita la Dimora del Signore, e stabilitevi in mezzo a noi; ma non ribellatevi al Signore e non fate di noi dei ribelli, costruendovi un altare oltre l'altare del Signore nostro Dio.	19 But if you think the land of your possession to be unclean, pass over to the land wherein is the tabernacle of the Lord, and dwell among us: only depart not from the Lord, and from our society, by building an altar beside the altar of the Lord our God.
20 Quando Acan figlio di Zerach commise un'infedeltà riguardo allo sterminio, non venne forse l'ira del Signore su tutta la comunità d'Israele sebbene fosse un individuo solo? Non dovette egli morire per la sua colpa?".	20 Did not Achan the son of Zare transgress the commandment of the Lord, and his wrath lay upon all the people of Israel? And he was but one man, and would to God he alone had perished in his wickedness.
21 Allora i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manàsse risposero e dissero ai capi dei gruppi di migliaia d'Israele:	21 And the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses answered the princes of the embassage of Israel:
22 "Dio, Dio, Signore! Dio, Dio, Signore! Lui lo sa, ma anche Israele lo sappia. Se abbiamo agito per ribellione o per infedeltà verso il Signore, che Egli non ci salvi oggi!	22 The Lord the most mighty God, the Lord the most mighty God, he knoweth, and Israel also shall understand: If with the design of transgression we have set up this altar, let him not save us, but punish us immediately:
23 Se abbiamo costruito un altare per desistere dal seguire il Signore; se è stato per offrire su di esso olocausti od oblazioni e per fare su di esso sacrifici di comunione, il Signore stesso ce ne chieda conto!	23 And if we did it with that mind, that we might lay upon it holocausts, and sacrifice, and victims of peace offerings, let him require and judge:
24 In verità l'abbiamo fatto preoccupati di questo: pensando cioè che in avvenire i vostri figli potessero dire ai nostri figli: Che avete in comune voi con il Signore Dio d'Israele?	24 And not rather with this thought and design, that we should say: To morrow your children will say to our children: What have you to do with the Lord the God of Israel?
25 Il Signore ha posto il Giordano come confine tra noi e voi, figli di Ruben e figli di Gad; voi non avete parte alcuna con il Signore! Così i vostri figli farebbero desistere i nostri figli dal temere il Signore.	25 The Lord hath put the river Jordan for a border between us and you, O ye children of Ruben, and ye children of Gad: and therefore you have no part in the Lord. And by this occasion you children shall turn away our children from the fear of the Lord. We therefore thought, it best,
26 Perciò abbiamo detto: Costruiamo un altare, non per olocausti, né per sacrifici,	26 And said: Let us build us an altar, not for holocausts, nor to offer victims,
27 ma perché sia testimonio fra noi e voi e fra i nostri discendenti dopo di noi, dimostrando che vogliamo servire al Signore dinanzi a lui, con i nostri olocausti, con le nostre vittime e con i nostri sacrifici di comunione. Così i vostri figli non potranno un giorno dire ai nostri figli: Voi non avete parte alcuna con il Signore.	27 But for a testimony between us and you, and our posterity and yours, that we may serve the Lord, and that we may have a right to offer both holocausts, and victims and sacrifices of peace offerings: and that your children to morrow may not say to our children: You have no part in the Lord.
28 Abbiamo detto: Se in avvenire essi diranno questo a noi o ai nostri discendenti, noi risponderemo: Guardate la forma dell'altare del Signore, che i nostri padri fecero, non per olocausti, né per sacrifici, ma perché fosse di testimonio fra noi e voi.	28 And if they will say so, they shall answer them: Behold the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for holocausts, nor for sacrifice, but for a testimony between us and you.
29 Lungi da noi l'idea di ribellarci al Signore e di desistere dal seguire il Signore, costruendo un altare per olocausti, per oblazioni o per sacrifici, oltre l'altare del Signore nostro Dio, che è davanti alla sua Dimora!".	29 God keep us from any such wickedness that we should revolt from the Lord, and leave off following his steps, by building an altar to offer holocausts, and sacrifices, and victims, beside the altar of the Lord our God, which is erected before his tabernacle.
30 Quando Pincas e i capi della comunità, i capi dei gruppi di migliaia d'Israele che erano con lui, udirono le parole dette dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e dai figli di Manàsse, ne rimasero soddisfatti.	30 And when Phinees the priest, and the princes of the embassage, who were with him, had heard this, they were satisfied: and they admitted most willingly the words of the children of Ruben, and Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses.
31 Pincas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro, disse ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e ai figli di Manàsse: "Oggi riconosciamo che il Signore è in mezzo a noi, poiché non avete commesso questa infedeltà verso il Signore; così avete preservato gli Israeliti dal castigo del Signore".	31 And Phinees the priest the son of Eleazar said to them: Now we know that the Lord is with us, because you are not guilty of this revolt, and you have delivered the children of Israel from the hand of the Lord.
32 Pincas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro, e i capi lasciarono i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e tornarono dal paese di Gàlaad al paese di Canaan presso gli Israeliti, ai quali riferirono l'accaduto.	32 And he returned with the princes from the children of Ruben and Gad, out of the land of Galaad, into the land of Chanaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
33 La cosa piacque agli Israeliti, i quali benedissero Dio e non parlarono più di muover guerra ai figli di Ruben e di Gad, per devastare il paese che essi abitavano.	33 And the saying pleased all that heard it. And the children of Israel praised God, and they no longer said that they would go up against them, and fight, and destroy the land of their possession.
34 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad chiamarono quell'altare Testimonio perché dissero: "Esso è testimonio fra di noi che il Signore è Dio".	34 And the children of Ruben, and the children of Cad called the altar which they had built, Our testimony, that the Lord is God.
