1 Quando Adoni-Zedek, re di Gerusalemme, venne a sapere che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l'aveva votata allo sterminio, e che, come aveva fatto a Gèrico e al suo re, aveva fatto ad Ai e al suo re e che gli abitanti di Gàbaon avevano fatto pace con gli Israeliti e si trovavano ormai in mezzo a loro,	1 Now Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that, in the capture and destruction of Ai, Joshua had done to that city and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king. He heard also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made their peace with Israel, remaining among them,
2 ebbe grande paura, perché Gàbaon, una delle città regali, era più grande di Ai e tutti i suoi uomini erano valorosi.	2 and that there was great fear abroad, because Gibeon was large enough for a royal city, larger even than the city of Ai, and all its men were brave.
3 Allora Adoni-Zedek, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Oam, re di Ebron, a Piream, re di Iarmut, a Iafia, re di Lachis e a Debir, re di Eglon:	3 So Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, sent for Hoham, king of Hebron, Piram, king of Jarmuth, Japhia, king of Lachish, and Debir, king of Eglon,
4 "Venite da me, aiutatemi e assaltiamo Gàbaon, perché ha fatto pace con Giosuè e con gli Israeliti".	4 to come to his aid for an attack on Gibeon, since it had concluded peace with Joshua and the Israelites.
5 Quelli si unirono e i cinque re amorrei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis ed il re di Eglon, vennero con tutte le loro truppe, si accamparono contro Gàbaon e le diedero battaglia.	5 The five Amorite kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon, united all their forces and marched against Gibeon, where they took up siege positions.
6 Allora gli uomini di Gàbaon mandarono a dire a Giosuè, all'accampamento di Gàlgala: "Non privare del tuo aiuto i tuoi servi. Vieni presto da noi; salvaci e aiutaci, perché si sono alleati contro di noi tutti i re degli Amorrei, che abitano sulle montagne".	6 Thereupon, the men of Gibeon sent an appeal to Joshua in his camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up here quickly and save us. Help us, because all the Amorite kings of the mountain country have joined forces against us."
7 Giosuè partì da Gàlgala con tutta la gente di guerra e tutti i prodi guerrieri.	7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his picked troops and the rest of his soldiers.
8 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: "Non aver paura di loro, perché li metto in tuo potere; nessuno di loro resisterà davanti a te".	8 Meanwhile the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your power. Not one of them will be able to withstand you."
9 Giosuè piombò su di loro d'improvviso: tutta la notte aveva marciato, partendo da Gàlgala.	9 And when Joshua made his surprise attack upon them after an all-night march from Gilgal,
10 Il Signore mise lo scompiglio in mezzo a loro dinanzi ad Israele, che inflisse loro in Gàbaon una grande disfatta, li inseguì verso la salita di Bet-Coron e li batté fino ad Azeka e fino a Makkeda.	10 the LORD threw them into disorder before him. The Israelites inflicted a great slaughter on them at Gibeon and pursued them down the Beth-horon slope, harrassing them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
11 Mentre essi fuggivano dinanzi ad Israele ed erano alla discesa di Bet-Coron, il Signore lanciò dal cielo su di essi come grosse pietre fino ad Azeka e molti morirono. Coloro che morirono per le pietre della grandine furono più di quanti ne uccidessero gli Israeliti con la spada.	11 While they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon, the LORD hurled great stones from the sky above them all the way to Azekah, killing many. More died from these hailstones than the Israelites slew with the sword.
12 Allora, quando il Signore mise gli Amorrei nelle mani degli Israeliti, Giosuè disse al Signore sotto gli occhi di Israele: "Sole, fèrmati in Gàbaon e tu, luna, sulla valle di Aialon".	12 On this day, when the LORD delivered up the Amorites to the Israelites,
13 Si fermò il sole e la luna rimase immobile finché il popolo non si vendicò dei nemici. Non è forse scritto nel libro del Giusto: "Stette fermo il sole in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a calare quasi un giorno intero.	13 And the sun stood still,
14 Non ci fu giorno come quello, né prima né dopo, perché aveva ascoltato il Signore la voce d'un uomo, perché il Signore combatteva per Israele"?	14 Never before or since was there a day like this, when the LORD obeyed the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.
15 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele ritornò all'accampamento di Gàlgala.	15 (Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.)
16 Quei cinque re erano fuggiti e si erano nascosti nella grotta in Makkeda.	16 Meanwhile the five kings who had fled, hid in a cave at Makkedah.
17 Fu portata a Giosuè la notizia: "Sono stati trovati i cinque re, nascosti nella grotta in Makkeda".	17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been discovered hiding in a cave at Makkedah,
18 Disse loro Giosuè: "Rotolate grosse pietre contro l'entrata della grotta e fate restare presso di essa uomini per sorvegliarli.	18 he said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave and post men over it to guard them.
19 Voi però non fermatevi, inseguite i vostri nemici, attaccateli nella retroguardia e non permettete loro di entrare nelle loro città, perché il Signore Dio vostro li mette nelle vostre mani".	19 But do not remain there yourselves. Pursue your enemies, and harry them in the rear. Do not allow them to escape to their cities, for the LORD, your God, has delivered them into your power."
20 Quando Giosuè e gli Israeliti ebbero terminato di infliggere loro una strage enorme così da finirli, e i superstiti furono loro sfuggiti ed entrati nelle fortezze,	20 Once Joshua and the Israelites had finally inflicted the last blows in this very great slaughter, and the survivors had escaped from them into the fortified cities,
21 ritornò tutto il popolo all'accampamento presso Giosuè, in Makkeda, in pace. Nessuno mosse più la lingua contro gli Israeliti.	21 all the army returned safely to Joshua and the camp at Makkedah, no man uttering a sound against the Israelites.
22 Disse allora Giosuè: "Aprite l'ingresso della grotta e fatemi uscire dalla grotta quei cinque re".	22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring out those five kings to me."
23 Così fecero e condussero a lui fuori dalla grotta quei cinque re, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon.	23 Obediently, they brought out to him from the cave the five kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.
24 Quando quei cinque re furono fatti uscire dinanzi a Giosuè, egli convocò tutti gli Israeliti e disse ai capi dei guerrieri che avevano marciato con lui: "Accostatevi e ponete i vostri piedi sul collo di questi re!". Quelli s'accostarono e posero i piedi sul loro collo.	24 When they had done so, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the soldiers who had marched with him, "Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings." They came forward and put their feet upon their necks.
25 Disse loro Giosuè: "Non temete e non spaventatevi! Siate forti e coraggiosi, perché così farà il Signore a tutti i nemici, contro cui dovrete combattere".	25 Then Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed, be firm and steadfast. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies against whom you fight."
26 Dopo di ciò, Giosuè li colpì e li uccise e li fece impiccare a cinque alberi, ai quali rimasero appesi fino alla sera.	26 Thereupon Joshua struck and killed them, and hanged them on five trees, where they remained hanging until evening.
27 All'ora del tramonto, per ordine di Giosuè, li calarono dagli alberi, li gettarono nella grotta dove si erano nascosti e posero grosse pietre all'ingresso della grotta: vi sono fino ad oggi.	27 At sunset they were removed from the trees at the command of Joshua and cast into the cave where they had hidden; over the mouth of the cave large stones were placed, which remain until this very day.
28 Giosuè in quel giorno si impadronì di Makkeda, la passò a fil di spada con il suo re, votò allo sterminio loro e ogni essere vivente che era in essa, non lasciò un superstite e trattò il re di Makkeda come aveva trattato il re di Gèrico.	28 Makkedah, too, Joshua captured and put to the sword at that time. He fulfilled the doom on the city, on its king, and on every person in it, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to the king of Makkedah what he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Giosuè poi, e con lui Israele, passò da Makkeda a Libna e mosse guerra contro Libna.	29 Joshua then passed on with all Israel from Makkedah to Libnah, which he attacked.
30 Il Signore mise anch'essa e il suo re in potere di Israele, che la passò a fil di spada con ogni essere vivente che era in essa; non vi lasciò alcun superstite e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gèrico.	30 Libnah also, with its king, the LORD delivered into the power of Israel. He put it to the sword with every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to its king what he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, passò da Libna a Lachis e si accampò contro di essa e le mosse guerra.	31 Joshua next passed on with all Israel from Libnah to Lachish, where they set up a camp during the attack.
32 Il Signore mise Lachis in potere di Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno e la passò a fil di spada con ogni essere vivente che era in essa, come aveva fatto a Libna.	32 The LORD delivered Lachish into the power of Israel, so that on the second day Joshua captured it and put it to the sword with every person in it, just as he had done to Libnah.
33 Allora, per venire in aiuto a Lachis, era partito Oam, re di Ghezer, e Giosuè batté lui e il suo popolo, fino a non lasciargli alcun superstite.	33 At that time Horam, king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his people, leaving him no survivors.
34 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, passò da Lachis ad Eglon, si accamparono contro di essa e le mossero guerra.	34 From Lachish, Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; encamping near it, they attacked it
35 In quel giorno la presero e la passarono a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio, in quel giorno, ogni essere vivente che era in essa, come aveva fatto a Lachis.	35 and captured it the same day, putting it to the sword. He fulfilled the doom that day on every person in it, just as he had done at Lachish.
36 Giosuè poi, e con lui tutto Israele, salì da Eglon ad Ebron e le mossero guerra.	36 From Eglon, Joshua went up with all Israel to Hebron, which they attacked
37 La presero e la passarono a fil di spada con il suo re, tutti i suoi villaggi e ogni essere vivente che era in essa; non lasciò alcun superstite; come aveva fatto ad Eglon, la votò allo sterminio con ogni essere vivente che era in essa.	37 and captured. They put it to the sword with its king, all its towns, and every person there, leaving no survivors, just as Joshua had done to Eglon. He fulfilled the doom on it and on every person there.
38 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, si rivolse a Debir e le mosse guerra.	38 Then Joshua and all Israel turned back to Debir and attacked it,
39 La prese con il suo re e tutti i suoi villaggi; li passarono a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio ogni essere vivente che era in essa; non lasciò alcun superstite. Trattò Debir e il suo re come aveva trattato Ebron e come aveva trattato Libna e il suo re.	39 capturing it with its king and all its towns. They put them to the sword and fulfilled the doom on every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus was done to Debir and its king what had been done to Hebron, as well as to Libnah and its king.
40 Così Giosuè batté tutto il paese: le montagne, il Negheb, il bassopiano, le pendici e tutti i loro re. Non lasciò alcun superstite e votò allo sterminio ogni essere che respira, come aveva comandato il Signore, Dio di Israele.	40 Joshua conquered the entire country; the mountain regions, the Negeb, the foothills, and the mountain slopes, with all their kings. He left no survivors, but fulfilled the doom on all who lived there, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
41 Giosuè li colpì da Kades-Barnea fino a Gaza e tutto il paese di Gosen fino a Gàbaon.	41 Joshua conquered from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen to Gibeon.
42 Giosuè prese tutti questi re e il loro paese in una sola volta, perché il Signore, Dio di Israele, combatteva per Israele.	42 All these kings and their lands Joshua captured in a single campaign, for the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
43 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele tornò all'accampamento di Gàlgala.	43 Thereupon Joshua with all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.
