1 Israele si stabilì a Sittim e il popolo cominciò a trescare con le figlie di Moab.	1 Israel settled at Shittim. The people gave themselves over to prostitution with Moabite women.
2 Esse invitarono il popolo ai sacrifici offerti ai loro dei; il popolo mangiò e si prostrò davanti ai loro dei.	2 These invited them to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down before theirgods.
3 Israele aderì al culto di Baal-Peor e l'ira del Signore si accese contro Israele.	3 With Israel thus committed to the Baal of Peor, Yahweh's anger was aroused against them.
4 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Prendi tutti i capi del popolo e fa' appendere al palo i colpevoli, davanti al Signore, al sole, perché l'ira ardente del Signore si allontani da Israele".	4 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Take al the leaders of the people. Impale them facing the sun, for Yahweh,to deflect his burning anger from Israel.'
5 Mosè disse ai giudici d'Israele: "Ognuno di voi uccida dei suoi uomini coloro che hanno aderito al culto di Baal-Peor".	5 Moses said to the judges of Israel, 'Each of you wil put to death those of his people who havecommitted themselves to the Baal of Peor.'
6 Ed ecco uno degli Israeliti venne e condusse ai suoi fratelli una donna madianita, sotto gli occhi di Mosè e di tutta la comunità degli Israeliti, mentre essi stavano piangendo all'ingresso della tenda del convegno.	6 One of the Israelites came along, bringing the Midianite woman into his family, under the very eyes ofMoses and the whole community of Israelites as they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
7 Vedendo ciò, Pincas figlio di Eleazaro, figlio del sacerdote Aronne, si alzò in mezzo alla comunità, prese in mano una lancia,	7 The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, on seeing this, stood up, left the assembly, seizeda lance,
8 seguì quell'uomo di Israele nella tenda e li trafisse tutti e due, l'uomo di Israele e la donna, nel basso ventre. E il flagello cessò tra gli Israeliti.	8 fol owed the Israelite into the alcove, and there ran them both through, the Israelite and the woman,through the stomach. Thus the plague which had struck the Israelites was arrested.
9 Di quel flagello morirono ventiquattromila persone.	9 In the plague twenty-four thousand of them had died.
10 Il Signore disse a Mosè:	10 Yahweh then spoke and said,
11 "Pincas, figlio di Eleazaro, figlio del sacerdote Aronne, ha allontanato la mia ira dagli Israeliti, perché egli è stato animato dal mio zelo fra di loro, e io nella mia gelosia non ho sterminato gli Israeliti.	11 'The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron has deflected my wrath from the Israelites, hebeing the only one of them to have the same zeal as I have; for which reason, I did not make an end of theIsraelites in my zeal.
12 Perciò digli che io stabilisco con lui un'alleanza di pace,	12 For this reason I say: To him I grant my covenant of peace.
13 che sarà per lui e per la sua stirpe dopo di lui un'alleanza di un sacerdozio perenne, perché egli ha avuto zelo per il suo Dio e ha fatto il rito espiatorio per gli Israeliti".	13 To him and his descendants after him, this covenant will assure the priesthood for ever. In rewardfor his zeal for his God, he will have the right to perform the ritual of expiation for the Israelites.'
14 Ora l'uomo d'Israele, che è stato ucciso con la donna madianita, si chiamava Zimri, figlio di Salu, capo di un casato paterno dei Simeoniti.	14 The Israelite who had been kil ed (the one who was kil ed with the Midianite woman) was cal edZimri son of Salu, leader of one of the Simeonite families.
15 La donna che è stata uccisa, la Madianita, si chiamava Cozbi, figlia di Zur, capo della gente di un casato in Madian.	15 The woman, the Midianite who was kil ed, was cal ed Cozbi, daughter of Zur, chief of a clan, of afamily, in Midian.
16 Poi il Signore disse a Mosè:	16 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
17 "Trattate i Madianiti da nemici e uccideteli,	17 'Harass the Midianites, strike them down,
18 poiché essi vi hanno trattati da nemici con le astuzie mediante le quali vi hanno sedotti nella faccenda di Peor e nella faccenda di Cozbi, figlia di un principe di Madian, loro sorella, che è stata uccisa il giorno del flagello causato per la faccenda di Peor".	18 for harassing you with their guile in the Peor affair and in the affair of their sister Cozbi, the daughterof a prince of Midian, the woman who was kil ed the day the plague came on account of the business of Peor.'
