BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora tutta la comunità alzò la voce e diede in alte grida; il popolo pianse tutta quella notte.	1 The whole community then cried out in dismay, and the people wept al that night.
2 Tutti gli Israeliti mormoravano contro Mosè e contro Aronne e tutta la comunità disse loro: "Oh! fossimo morti nel paese d'Egitto o fossimo morti in questo deserto!	2 Al the Israelites muttered at Moses and Aaron, and the whole community said to them, 'Would toGod we had died in Egypt, or even that we had died in this desert!
3 E perché il Signore ci conduce in quel paese per cadere di spada? Le nostre mogli e i nostri bambini saranno preda. Non sarebbe meglio per noi tornare in Egitto?".	3 Why has Yahweh brought us to this country, for us to perish by the sword and our wives and childrento be seized as booty? Should we not do better to go back to Egypt?'
4 Si dissero l'un l'altro: "Diamoci un capo e torniamo in Egitto".	4 And they said to one another, 'Let us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt.'
5 Allora Mosè e Aronne si prostrarono a terra dinanzi a tutta la comunità riunita degli Israeliti.	5 At this, Moses and Aaron threw themselves on their faces in front of the whole assembled communityof Israelites,
6 Giosuè figlio di Nun e Caleb figlio di Iefunne, che erano fra coloro che avevano esplorato il paese, si stracciarono le vesti	6 while Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of the men who had reconnoitred thecountry, tore their clothes
7 e parlarono così a tutta la comunità degli Israeliti: "Il paese che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarlo è un paese molto buono.	7 and addressed the whole community of Israelites as fol ows, 'The country we went to reconnoitre is agood country, an excel ent country.
8 Se il Signore ci è favorevole, ci introdurrà in quel paese e ce lo darà: è un paese dove scorre latte e miele.	8 If Yahweh is pleased with us, he will lead us into this country and give it to us. It is a country flowingwith milk and honey.
9 Soltanto, non vi ribellate al Signore e non abbiate paura del popolo del paese; è pane per noi e la loro difesa li ha abbandonati mentre il Signore è con noi; non ne abbiate paura".	9 But do not rebel against Yahweh or be afraid of the people of the country, for we shal gobble themup. Their protecting shade has deserted them, while we have Yahweh on our side. Do not be afraid of them.'
10 Allora tutta la comunità parlò di lapidarli; ma la Gloria del Signore apparve sulla tenda del convegno a tutti gli Israeliti.	10 The whole community was talking of stoning them, when the glory of Yahweh appeared to al theIsraelites, inside the Tent of Meeting,
11 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Fino a quando mi disprezzerà questo popolo? E fino a quando non avranno fede in me, dopo tutti i miracoli che ho fatti in mezzo a loro?	11 and Yahweh said to Moses: 'How much longer wil these people treat me with contempt? How muchlonger will they refuse to trust me, in spite of al the signs I have displayed among them?
12 Io lo colpirò con la peste e lo distruggerò, ma farò di te una nazione più grande e più potente di esso".	12 I shall strike them with pestilence and disown them. And of you I shall make a new nation, greaterand mightier than they are.'
13 Mosè disse al Signore: "Ma gli Egiziani hanno saputo che tu hai fatto uscire questo popolo con la tua potenza	13 Moses said to Yahweh: 'Suppose the Egyptians hear about this -- for by your power you broughtthese people out of their country-
14 e lo hanno detto agli abitanti di questo paese. Essi hanno udito che tu, Signore, sei in mezzo a questo popolo, e ti mostri loro faccia a faccia, che la tua nube si ferma sopra di loro e che cammini davanti a loro di giorno in una colonna di nube e di notte in una colonna di fuoco.	14 and tel the people living in this country. They have heard that you, Yahweh, are with this people,and that you, Yahweh, show yourself to them face to face; that your cloud stands over them and that you gobefore them in a pil ar of cloud by day and a pil ar of fire by night.
15 Ora se fai perire questo popolo come un solo uomo, le nazioni che hanno udito la tua fama, diranno:	15 If you kil this people now as though it were one man, then the nations who have heard about youwil say,
16 Siccome il Signore non è stato in grado di far entrare questo popolo nel paese che aveva giurato di dargli, li ha ammazzati nel deserto.	16 "Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the country which he had sworn to give them, and sohe has slaughtered them in the desert."
17 Ora si mostri grande la potenza del mio Signore, perché tu hai detto:	17 No, my Lord! Now is the time to assert your power as you promised when you said, earlier,
18 Il Signore è lento all'ira e grande in bontà, perdona la colpa e la ribellione, ma non lascia senza punizione; castiga la colpa dei padri nei figli fino alla terza e alla quarta generazione.	18 "Yahweh, slow to anger and rich in faithful love, forgiving faults and transgression, and yet lettingnothing go unchecked, punishing the parents' guilt in the children to the third and fourth generation."
19 Perdona l'iniquità di questo popolo, secondo la grandezza della tua bontà, così come hai perdonato a questo popolo dall'Egitto fin qui".	19 In your most faithful love, please forgive this people's guilt, as you have done from Egypt until now.'
20 Il Signore disse: "Io perdono come tu hai chiesto;	20 Yahweh said, 'I forgive them as you ask.
21 ma, per la mia vita, com'è vero che tutta la terra sarà piena della gloria del Signore,	21 But -- as I live, and as the glory of Yahweh fills the whole world-
22 tutti quegli uomini che hanno visto la mia gloria e i prodigi compiuti da me in Egitto e nel deserto e tuttavia mi hanno messo alla prova già dieci volte e non hanno obbedito alla mia voce,	22 of all these people who have seen my glory and the signs that I worked in Egypt and in the desert,who have put me to the test ten times already and not obeyed my voice,
23 certo non vedranno il paese che ho giurato di dare ai loro padri. Nessuno di quelli che mi hanno disprezzato lo vedrà;	23 not one shal see the country which I promised to give their ancestors. Not one of those who havetreated me contemptuously will see it.
24 ma il mio servo Caleb che è stato animato da un altro spirito e mi ha seguito fedelmente io lo introdurrò nel paese dove è andato; la sua stirpe lo possiederà.	24 However, since my servant Caleb is of another spirit and since he has obeyed me completely, I shallbring him into the country where he has been, and his descendants will own it
25 Gli Amaleciti e i Cananei abitano nella valle; domani tornate indietro, incamminatevi verso il deserto, per la via del Mare Rosso".	25 (the Amalekites and Canaanites occupy the plain). Tomorrow you wil turn about and go back intothe desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph.'
26 Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè e ad Aronne:	26 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:
27 "Fino a quando sopporterò io questa comunità malvagia che mormora contro di me? Io ho udito le lamentele degli Israeliti contro di me.	27 'How much longer am I to endure this perverse community muttering against me? I have heard whatthe Israelites mutter against me.
28 Riferisci loro: Per la mia vita, dice il Signore, io vi farò quello che ho sentito dire da voi.	28 Say to them, "As I live, Yahweh declares, I shal do to you what I have heard you saying.
29 I vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto. Nessuno di voi, di quanti siete stati registrati dall'età di venti anni in su e avete mormorato contro di me,	29 In this desert your dead bodies wil fal , al you who were counted in the census, from the age oftwenty years and over who have muttered against me.
30 potrà entrare nel paese nel quale ho giurato di farvi abitare, se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunne, e Giosuè figlio di Nun.	30 I swear none of you will enter the country where I swore most solemnly to settle you, except Calebson of Jephunneh, and Joshua son of Nun.
31 I vostri bambini, dei quali avete detto che sarebbero diventati una preda di guerra, quelli ve li farò entrare; essi conosceranno il paese che voi avete disprezzato.	31 Your children, who you said would be seized as booty, wil be the ones whom I shal bring in so thatthey get to know the country you disdained,
32 Ma i vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto.	32 but, as for you, your dead bodies wil fall in this desert
33 I vostri figli saranno nòmadi nel deserto per quarant'anni e porteranno il peso delle vostre infedeltà, finché i vostri cadaveri siano tutti quanti nel deserto.	33 and your children wil be nomads in the desert for forty years, bearing the consequences of yourfaithlessness, until the last one of you lies dead in the desert.
34 Secondo il numero dei giorni che avete impiegato per esplorare il paese, quaranta giorni, sconterete le vostre iniquità per quarant'anni, un anno per ogni giorno e conoscerete la mia ostilità.	34 For forty days you reconnoitred the country. Each day wil count as a year: for forty years you willbear the consequences of your guilt and learn what it means to reject me."
35 Io, il Signore, ho parlato. Così agirò con tutta questa comunità malvagia che si è riunita contro di me: in questo deserto saranno annientati e qui moriranno".	35 I, Yahweh, have spoken: this is how I swear to treat this entire perverse community united againstme. In this desert, to the last man, they shall die.'
36 Gli uomini che Mosè aveva mandati a esplorare il paese e che, tornati, avevano fatto mormorare tutta la comunità contro di lui diffondendo il discredito sul paese,	36 The men whom Moses had sent to reconnoitre the country and who on their return had incited thewhole community of Israel to mutter about him by disparaging it,
37 quegli uomini che avevano propagato cattive voci su quel paese, morirono colpiti da un flagello, davanti al Signore.	37 these men who had disparaged the country were al struck dead before Yahweh.
38 Ma di quelli che erano andati a esplorare il paese rimasero vivi Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e Caleb, figlio di Iefunne.	38 Of the men who had gone to reconnoitre the country, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son ofJephunneh were left alive.
39 Mosè riferì quelle parole a tutti gli Israeliti; il popolo ne fu molto turbato.	39 When Moses told all the Israelites what had been said, the people set up a great outcry.
40 La mattina si alzarono presto per salire verso la cima del monte, dicendo: "Eccoci qua; noi saliremo al luogo del quale il Signore ha detto che noi abbiamo peccato".	40 Early next morning they set out for the heights of the hil country saying, 'Look, we wil set out for theplace about which Yahweh said that we have sinned.'
41 Ma Mosè disse: "Perché trasgredite l'ordine del Signore? La cosa non vi riuscirà.	41 To which, Moses said, 'Why disobey Yahweh's order? No success wil come of doing so.
42 Poiché il Signore non è in mezzo a voi, non salite perché non siate sconfitti dai vostri nemici!	42 Do not go, for Yahweh is not among you, and you wil be defeated by your enemies.
43 Perché di fronte a voi stanno gli Amaleciti e i Cananei e voi cadrete di spada; perché avete abbandonato il Signore, il Signore non sarà con voi".	43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are ahead of you, and you wil be put to the sword, since youhave turned away from Yahweh, and Yahweh is not with you.'
44 Si ostinarono a salire verso la cima del monte, ma l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore e Mosè non si mossero dall'accampamento.	44 All the same, they presumptuously set off for the heights of the hil country. Neither the ark of thecovenant of Yahweh nor Moses left the camp.
45 Allora gli Amaleciti e i Cananei che abitavano su quel monte scesero, li batterono e ne fecero strage fino a Corma.	45 The Amalekites and Canaanites living in those highlands then came down, defeated them andharried them al the way to Hormah.
