1 In quel tempo Giuda si separò dai suoi fratelli e si stabilì presso un uomo di Adullam, di nome Chira.	1 About the same time, Judah, descending from his brothers, turned toward an Adullamite man, named Hirah.
2 Qui Giuda vide la figlia di un Cananeo chiamato Sua, la prese in moglie e si unì a lei.	2 And he saw there the daughter of a man called Shua, of Canaan. And taking her as a wife, he entered to her.
3 Essa concepì e partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Er.	3 And she conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Er.
4 Poi concepì ancora e partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Onan.	4 And conceiving offspring again, having given birth to a son, she called him Onan.
5 Ancora un'altra volta partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Sela. Essa si trovava in Chezib, quando lo partorì.	5 Likewise, she bore a third, whom she called Shelah, after whose birth, she ceased to bear any more.
6 Giuda prese una moglie per il suo primogenito Er, la quale si chiamava Tamar.	6 Then Judah gave a wife to his first born Er, whose name was Tamar.
7 Ma Er, primogenito di Giuda, si rese odioso al Signore e il Signore lo fece morire.	7 And it also happened that Er, the first born of Judah, was wicked in the sight of the Lord and was killed by him.
8 Allora Giuda disse a Onan: "Unisciti alla moglie del fratello, compi verso di lei il dovere di cognato e assicura così una posterità per il fratello".	8 Therefore, Judah said to his son Onan: “Enter to the wife of your brother, and associate with her, so that you may raise offspring to your brother.”
9 Ma Onan sapeva che la prole non sarebbe stata considerata come sua; ogni volta che si univa alla moglie del fratello, disperdeva per terra, per non dare una posterità al fratello.	9 He, knowing that the sons to be born would not be his, when he entered to the wife of his brother, he spilled his seed on the ground, lest children should be born in his brother’s name.
10 Ciò che egli faceva non fu gradito al Signore, il quale fece morire anche lui.	10 And for this reason, the Lord struck him down, because he did a detestable thing.
11 Allora Giuda disse alla nuora Tamar: "Ritorna a casa da tuo padre come vedova fin quando il mio figlio Sela sarà cresciuto". Perché pensava: "Che non muoia anche questo come i suoi fratelli!". Così Tamar se ne andò e ritornò alla casa del padre.	11 Because of this matter, Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Be a widow in your father’s house, until my son Shelah grows up.” For he was afraid, lest he also might die, just as his brothers did. She went away, and she lived in her father’s house.
12 Passarono molti giorni e morì la figlia di Sua, moglie di Giuda. Quando Giuda ebbe finito il lutto, andò a Timna da quelli che tosavano il suo gregge e con lui vi era Chira, il suo amico di Adullam.	12 Then, after many days had passed, the daughter of Shua, the wife of Judah, died. And when he accepted consolation after his mourning, he went up to the shearers of his sheep at Timnah, he and Hirah, the herdsman of the Adullamite flock.
13 Fu portata a Tamar questa notizia: "Ecco, tuo suocero va a Timna per la tosatura del suo gregge".	13 And it was reported to Tamar that her father-in-law had gone up to Timnah to shear the sheep.
14 Allora Tamar si tolse gli abiti vedovili, si coprì con il velo e se lo avvolse intorno, poi si pose a sedere all'ingresso di Enaim, che è sulla strada verso Timna. Aveva visto infatti che Sela era ormai cresciuto, ma che lei non gli era stata data in moglie.	14 And storing away the garments of her widowhood, she took up a veil. And changing her clothing, she sat at the crossroad that leads to Timnah, because Shelah had grown up, and she had not received him as a husband.
15 Giuda la vide e la credette una prostituta, perché essa si era coperta la faccia.	15 And when Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot. For she had covered her face, lest she be recognized.
16 Egli si diresse su quella strada verso di lei e disse: "Lascia che io venga con te!". Non sapeva infatti che quella fosse la sua nuora. Essa disse: "Che mi darai per venire con me?".	16 And entering to her, he said, “Permit me to join with you.” For he did not know her to be his daughter-in-law. And she responded, “What will you give to me, to enjoy me as a concubine?”
17 Rispose: "Io ti manderò un capretto del gregge". Essa riprese: "Mi dai un pegno fin quando me lo avrai mandato?".	17 He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” And again, she said, “I will allow what you want, if you give me a pledge, until you may send what you promise.”
18 Egli disse: "Qual è il pegno che ti devo dare?". Rispose: "Il tuo sigillo, il tuo cordone e il bastone che hai in mano". Allora glieli diede e le si unì. Essa concepì da lui.	18 Judah said, “What do you want to be given for a pledge?” She responded, “Your ring and bracelet, and the staff that you hold in your hand.” Thereupon, the woman, from one sexual encounter, conceived.
19 Poi si alzò e se ne andò; si tolse il velo e rivestì gli abiti vedovili.	19 And she arose and went away. And storing away the garments that she had taken up, she was clothed in the garments of her widowhood.
20 Giuda mandò il capretto per mezzo del suo amico di Adullam, per riprendere il pegno dalle mani di quella donna, ma quegli non la trovò.	20 Then Judah sent a young goat by his shepherd, the Adullamite, so that he might receive the pledge that he had given to the woman. But, when he had not found her,
21 Domandò agli uomini di quel luogo: "Dov'è quella prostituta che stava in Enaim sulla strada?". Ma risposero: "Non c'è stata qui nessuna prostituta".	21 he questioned the men of that place: “Where is the woman who sat at the crossroad?” And they all responded, “There has been no harlot in this place.”
22 Così tornò da Giuda e disse: "Non l'ho trovata; anche gli uomini di quel luogo dicevano: Non c'è stata qui nessuna prostituta".	22 He returned to Judah, and he said to him: “I did not find her. Moreover, the men of that place told me that a prostitute had never sat there.”
23 Allora Giuda disse: "Se li tenga! Altrimenti ci esponiamo agli scherni. Vedi che le ho mandato questo capretto, ma tu non l'hai trovata".	23 Judah said: “Let her hold herself to blame. Certainly, she is not able to accuse us of a lie. I sent the young goat that I had promised, and you did not find her.”
24 Circa tre mesi dopo, fu portata a Giuda questa notizia: "Tamar, la tua nuora, si è prostituita e anzi è incinta a causa della prostituzione". Giuda disse: "Conducetela fuori e sia bruciata!".	24 And behold, after three months, they reported to Judah, saying, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has committed fornication and her abdomen appears to be enlarged.” And Judah said, “Produce her, so that she may be burned.”
25 Essa veniva già condotta fuori, quando mandò a dire al suocero: "Dell'uomo a cui appartengono questi oggetti io sono incinta". E aggiunse: "Riscontra, dunque, di chi siano questo sigillo, questi cordoni e questo bastone".	25 But when she was led out to the punishment, she sent to her father-in-law, saying: “I conceived by the man to whom these things belong. Recognize whose ring, and bracelet, and staff this is.”
26 Giuda li riconobbe e disse: "Essa è più giusta di me, perché io non l'ho data a mio figlio Sela". E non ebbe più rapporti con lei.	26 But he, acknowledging the gifts, said: “She is more just than I am. For I did not deliver her to my son Shelah.” However, he knew her no more.
27 Quand'essa fu giunta al momento di partorire, ecco aveva nel grembo due gemelli.	27 Then, at the moment of birth, there appeared twins in the womb. And so, in the very delivery of the infants, one put forth a hand, on which the midwife tied a scarlet thread, saying,
28 Durante il parto, uno di essi mise fuori una mano e la levatrice prese un filo scarlatto e lo legò attorno a quella mano, dicendo: "Questi è uscito per primo".	28 “This one will go out first.”
29 Ma, quando questi ritirò la mano, ecco uscì suo fratello. Allora essa disse: "Come ti sei aperta una breccia?" e lo si chiamò Perez.	29 But in truth, drawing back his hand, the other came out. And the woman said, “Why is the partition divided for you?” And for this reason, she called his name Perez.
30 Poi uscì suo fratello, che aveva il filo scarlatto alla mano, e lo si chiamò Zerach.	30 After this, his brother came out, on whose hand was the scarlet thread. And she called him Zerah.
