1 Poi Giacobbe si mise in cammino e andò nel paese degli orientali.	1 Continuing his journey, Jacob reached the Land of the Easterners.
2 Vide nella campagna un pozzo e tre greggi di piccolo bestiame, accovacciati vicino, perché a quel pozzo si abbeveravano i greggi, ma la pietra sulla bocca del pozzo era grande.	2 And there, out in the open, he saw a well with three flocks of sheep lying beside it; this wel was usedfor watering the flocks. Now the stone on the mouth of the wel was a large one,
3 Quando tutti i greggi si erano radunati là, i pastori rotolavano la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e abbeveravano il bestiame; poi rimettevano la pietra al posto sulla bocca del pozzo.	3 and only when al the flocks had collected there, did they rol the stone off the mouth of the wel andwater the sheep; then they would replace the stone over the mouth of the wel .
4 Giacobbe disse loro: "Fratelli miei, di dove siete?". Risposero: "Siamo di Carran".	4 Jacob said to the shepherds, 'Friends, where are you from?' They replied, 'We are from Haran.'
5 Disse loro: "Conoscete Làbano, figlio di Nacor?". Risposero: "Lo conosciamo".	5 He asked them, 'Do you know Laban son of Nahor?' They replied, 'We do.'
6 Disse loro: "Sta bene?". Risposero: "Sì; ecco la figlia Rachele che viene con il gregge".	6 Then he asked them, 'Is he wel ?' 'He is,' they replied, 'and here comes his daughter Rachel with theflock.'

10 Quando Giacobbe vide Rachele, figlia di Làbano, fratello di sua madre, insieme con il bestiame di Làbano, fratello di sua madre, Giacobbe, fattosi avanti, rotolò la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e fece bere le pecore di Làbano, fratello di sua madre.	10 As soon as Jacob saw Rachel, his uncle Laban's daughter, with his uncle Laban's flock, he went upand, rolling the stone off the mouth of the wel , watered his uncle Laban's sheep.
11 Poi Giacobbe baciò Rachele e pianse ad alta voce.	11 Jacob then kissed Rachel and burst into tears.

16 Ora Làbano aveva due figlie; la maggiore si chiamava Lia e la più piccola si chiamava Rachele.	16 Now Laban had two daughters, the elder named Leah, and the younger Rachel.
17 Lia aveva gli occhi smorti, mentre Rachele era bella di forme e avvenente di aspetto,	17 Leah had lovely eyes, but Rachel was shapely and beautiful,
18 perciò Giacobbe amava Rachele. Disse dunque: "Io ti servirò sette anni per Rachele, tua figlia minore".	18 and Jacob had fallen in love with Rachel. So his answer was, 'I shal work for you for seven years inexchange for your younger daughter Rachel.'
19 Rispose Làbano: "Preferisco darla a te piuttosto che a un estraneo. Rimani con me".	19 Laban replied, 'It is better for me to give her to you than to a stranger; stay with me.'
20 Così Giacobbe servì sette anni per Rachele: gli sembrarono pochi giorni tanto era il suo amore per lei.	20 So Jacob worked for seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him like a few days because heloved her so much.
21 Poi Giacobbe disse a Làbano: "Dammi la mia sposa, perché il mio tempo è compiuto e voglio unirmi a lei".	21 Then Jacob said to Laban, 'Give me my wife, for my time is up and I should like to go to her.'
22 Allora Làbano radunò tutti gli uomini del luogo e diede un banchetto.	22 Laban gathered al the people of the place together, and gave a banquet.
23 Ma quando fu sera, egli prese la figlia Lia e la condusse da lui ed egli si unì a lei.	23 But when night came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and he slept with her.
24 Làbano diede la propria schiava Zilpa alla figlia Lia, come schiava.	24 (Laban gave his slave-girl Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her slave.)
25 Quando fu mattina... ecco era Lia! Allora Giacobbe disse a Làbano: "Che mi hai fatto? Non è forse per Rachele che sono stato al tuo servizio? Perché mi hai ingannato?".	25 When morning came, it was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, 'What have you done to me? Did I notwork for you for Rachel? Why then have you tricked me?'
26 Rispose Làbano: "Non si usa far così nel nostro paese, dare, cioè, la più piccola prima della maggiore.	26 Laban replied, 'It is not the custom in our place to marry off the younger before the elder.
27 Finisci questa settimana nuziale, poi ti darò anche quest'altra per il servizio che tu presterai presso di me per altri sette anni".	27 Finish this marriage week and I shal give you the other one too in return for your working for me foranother seven years.'
28 Giacobbe fece così: terminò la settimana nuziale e allora Làbano gli diede in moglie la figlia Rachele.	28 Jacob agreed and, when he had finished the week, Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife.
29 Làbano diede alla figlia Rachele la propria schiava Bila, come schiava.	29 (Laban gave his slave-girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her slave.)
30 Egli si unì anche a Rachele e amò Rachele più di Lia. Fu ancora al servizio di lui per altri sette anni.	30 So Jacob slept with Rachel too, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. He worked for Laban foranother seven years.
31 Ora il Signore, vedendo che Lia veniva trascurata, la rese feconda, mentre Rachele rimaneva sterile.	31 When Yahweh saw that Leah was unloved, he opened her womb, while Rachel remained barren.
32 Così Lia concepì e partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Ruben, perché disse: "Il Signore ha visto la mia umiliazione; certo, ora mio marito mi amerà".	32 Leah conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Reuben, meaning 'Yahweh has seen mymisery'; and she said, 'Now my husband will love me.'
33 Poi concepì ancora un figlio e disse: "Il Signore ha udito che io ero trascurata e mi ha dato anche questo". E lo chiamò Simeone.	33 Conceiving again, she gave birth to a son and said, 'Yahweh heard that I was unloved, and so hehas given me this one too'; and she named him Simeon.
34 Poi concepì ancora e partorì un figlio e disse: "Questa volta mio marito mi si affezionerà, perché gli ho partorito tre figli". Per questo lo chiamò Levi.	34 Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'This time my husband wil become attachedto me, because I have borne him three sons.' Accordingly, she named him Levi.
35 Concepì ancora e partorì un figlio e disse: "Questa volta loderò il Signore". Per questo lo chiamò Giuda. Poi cessò di avere figli.	35 Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'Now I shal praise Yahweh!' Accordingly, shenamed him Judah. Then she had no more children.
