1 Cophar de Naamat prit la parole et dit:	1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:
2 Le bavard restera-t-il sans réponse? Suffit-il d'être loquace pour avoir raison?	2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?
3 Ton verbiage rendra-t-il muets les autres, te moqueras-tu sans qu'on te confonde?	3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?
4 Tu as dit: "Ma conduite est pure, je suis irréprochable à tes yeux."	4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?
5 Mais si Dieu voulait parler, ouvrir les lèvres pour te répondre,	5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,
6 s'il te dévoilait les secrets de la Sagesse, qui déconcertent toute sagacité, tu saurais que Dieu tedemande compte de ta faute.	6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.
7 Prétends-tu sonder la profondeur de Dieu, atteindre la limite de Shaddaï?	7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?
8 Elle est plus haute que les cieux: que feras-tu? Plus profonde que le shéol: que sauras-tu?	8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?
9 Elle serait plus longue que la terre à mesurer et plus large que la mer.	9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.
10 S'il intervient pour enfermer et convoquer l'assemblée, qui l'en empêchera?	10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?
11 Car lui connaît la fausseté chez l'homme; il voit le crime et y prête attention.	11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?
12 Aussi l'écervelé doit-il s'assagir, et l'homme aux moeurs d'onagre se laisser domestiquer.	12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?
13 Allons, redresse tes pensées, tends tes paumes vers lui!	13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,
14 Si tu répudies le mal dont tu serais responsable et ne laisses pas l'injustice habiter sous tes tentes,	14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,
15 tu lèveras un front pur, tu seras ferme et sans crainte.	15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.
16 Ton malheur, tu n'y songeras plus, il laissera le souvenir des eaux qui passent.	16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.
17 Alors débutera une existence plus radieuse que le midi et l'obscurité même sera comme le matin.	17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,
18 Confiant car il y a de l'espoir, même après la confusion, tu te coucheras en sécurité.	18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,
19 Lorsque tu reposeras, nul ne te troublera, et bien des gens rechercheront ta faveur.	19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,
20 Les méchants, eux, tournent des yeux éteints, tout refuge leur fait défaut; leur espoir, c'est le derniersoupir.	20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.
