1 En el año quince del imperio de Tiberio César, siendo Poncio Pilato procurador de Judea, y Herodes tetrarca de Galilea; Filipo, su hermano, tetrarca de Iturea y de Traconítida, y Lisanias tetrarca de Abilene;	1 Then, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being procurator of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
2 en el pontificado de Anás y Caifás, fue dirigida la palabra de Dios a Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.	2 under the high priests Annas and Caiaphas: the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.

And what is crooked shall be made straight. And the rough paths shall be made into level ways.
6 Y todos verán la salvación de Dios.	6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
7 Decía, pues, a la gente que acudía para ser bautizada por él: «Raza de víboras, ¿quién os ha enseñado a huir de la ira inminente?	7 Therefore, he said to the crowd that went out in order to be baptized by him: “You progeny of vipers! Who told you to flee from the approaching wrath?
8 Dad, pues, frutos dignos de conversión, y no andéis diciendo en vuestro interior: “Tenemos por padre a Abraham”; porque os digo que puede Dios de estas piedras dar hijos a Abraham.	8 So then, produce fruits worthy of repentance. And do not begin to say, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.
9 Y ya está el hacha puesta a la raíz de los árboles; y todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego».	9 For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.”
10 La gente le preguntaba: «Pues ¿qué debemos hacer?»	10 And the crowed was questioning him, saying, “What then should we do?”
11 Y él les respondía: «El que tenga dos túnicas, que las reparta con el que no tiene; el que tenga para comer, que haga lo mismo».	11 But in response, he said to them: “Whoever has two coats, let him give to those who do not have. And whoever has food, let him act similarly.”
12 Vinieron también publicanos a bautizarse, y le dijeron: «Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer?»	12 Now the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”
13 El les dijo: «No exijáis más de lo que os está fijado».	13 But he said to them, “You should do nothing more than what has been appointed to you.”
14 Preguntáronle también unos soldados: «Y nosotros ¿qué debemos hacer?» El les dijo: «No hagáis extorsión a nadie, no hagáis denuncias falsas, y contentaos con vuestra soldada».	14 Then the soldiers also questioned him, saying, “And what should we do?” And he said to them: “You should strike no one, and you should not make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”
15 Como el pueblo estaba a la espera, andaban todos pensando en sus corazones acerca de Juan, si no sería él el Cristo;	15 Now all were thinking about John in their hearts, and the people were supposing that perhaps he might be the Christ.
16 respondió Juan a todos, diciendo: «Yo os bautizo con agua; pero viene el que es más fuerte que yo, y no soy digno de desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. El os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego.	16 John responded by saying to everyone: “Indeed, I baptize you with water. But there will arrive one stronger than me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit, and with fire.
17 En su mano tiene el bieldo para limpiar su era y recoger el trigo en su granero; pero la paja la quemará con fuego que no se apaga».	17 His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will purify his threshing floor. And he will gather the wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
18 Y, con otras muchas exhortaciones, anunciaba al pueblo la Buena Nueva.	18 Indeed, he also proclaimed many other things, exhorting the people.
19 Pero Herodes, el tetrarca, reprendido por él a causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano, y a causa de todas las malas acciones que había hecho,	19 But Herod the tetrarch, when he was corrected by him concerning Herodias, his brother’s wife, and concerning all the evils that Herod had done,
20 añadió a todas ellas la de encerrar a Juan en la cárcel.	20 added this also, above all else: that he confined John to prison.
21 Sucedió que cuando todo el pueblo estaba bautizándose, bautizado también Jesús y puesto en oración, se abrió el cielo,	21 Now it happened that, when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized; and as he was praying, heaven was opened.
22 y bajó sobre él el Espíritu Santo en forma corporal, como una paloma; y vino una voz del cielo: «Tú eres mi hijo; yo hoy te he engendrado».	22 And the Holy Spirit, in a corporal appearance like a dove, descended upon him. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son. In you, I am well pleased.”
