BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 En el año quince del imperio de Tiberio César, siendo Poncio Pilato procurador de Judea, y Herodes tetrarca de Galilea; Filipo, su hermano, tetrarca de Iturea y de Traconítida, y Lisanias tetrarca de Abilene;	1 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,

5 todo barranco será rellenado, todo monte y colina será rebajado, lo tortuoso se hará recto y las asperezas serán caminos llanos.	5 Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,
6 Y todos verán la salvación de Dios.	6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.
7 Decía, pues, a la gente que acudía para ser bautizada por él: «Raza de víboras, ¿quién os ha enseñado a huir de la ira inminente?	7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?
8 Dad, pues, frutos dignos de conversión, y no andéis diciendo en vuestro interior: “Tenemos por padre a Abraham”; porque os digo que puede Dios de estas piedras dar hijos a Abraham.	8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.
9 Y ya está el hacha puesta a la raíz de los árboles; y todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego».	9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'
10 La gente le preguntaba: «Pues ¿qué debemos hacer?»	10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'
11 Y él les respondía: «El que tenga dos túnicas, que las reparta con el que no tiene; el que tenga para comer, que haga lo mismo».	11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'
12 Vinieron también publicanos a bautizarse, y le dijeron: «Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer?»	12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'
13 El les dijo: «No exijáis más de lo que os está fijado».	13 He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'
14 Preguntáronle también unos soldados: «Y nosotros ¿qué debemos hacer?» El les dijo: «No hagáis extorsión a nadie, no hagáis denuncias falsas, y contentaos con vuestra soldada».	14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'
15 Como el pueblo estaba a la espera, andaban todos pensando en sus corazones acerca de Juan, si no sería él el Cristo;	15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,
16 respondió Juan a todos, diciendo: «Yo os bautizo con agua; pero viene el que es más fuerte que yo, y no soy digno de desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. 17 En su mano tiene el bieldo para limpiar su era y recoger el trigo en su granero; pero la paja la quemará con fuego que no se apaga».	17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'
18 Y, con otras muchas exhortaciones, anunciaba al pueblo la Buena Nueva.	18 And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.
19 Pero Herodes, el tetrarca, reprendido por él a causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano, y a causa de todas las malas acciones que había hecho,	19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,
20 añadió a todas ellas la de encerrar a Juan en la cárcel.	20 added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.
21 Sucedió que cuando todo el pueblo estaba bautizándose, bautizado también Jesús y puesto en oración, se abrió el cielo,	21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened
22 y bajó sobre él el Espíritu Santo en forma corporal, como una paloma; y vino una voz del cielo: «Tú eres mi hijo; yo hoy te he engendrado».	22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'
