NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
I urge then, first of al that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving should be offered foreveryone,1 First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone,
for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live peaceful and quiet lives with al devotionand propriety.2 for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.
To do this is right, and acceptable to God our Saviour:3 This is good and pleasing to God our savior,
he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth.4 who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.
For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a humanbeing, Christ Jesus,5 For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and the human race, Christ Jesus, himself human,
who offered himself as a ransom for al . This was the witness given at the appointed time,6 who gave himself as ransom for all. This was the testimony at the proper time.
of which I was appointed herald and apostle and -- I am telling the truth and no lie -- a teacher of thegentiles in faith and truth.7 For this I was appointed preacher and apostle (I am speaking the truth, I am not lying), teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
In every place, then, I want the men to lift their hands up reverently in prayer, with no anger or argument.8 It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.
Similarly, women are to wear suitable clothes and to be dressed quietly and modestly, without braidedhair or gold and jewellery or expensive clothes;9 Similarly, (too,) women should adorn themselves with proper conduct, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hairstyles and gold ornaments, or pearls, or expensive clothes,
their adornment is to do the good works that are proper for women who claim to be religious.10 but rather, as befits women who profess reverence for God, with good deeds.
During instruction, a woman should be quiet and respectful.11 A woman must receive instruction silently and under complete control.
I give no permission for a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. A woman ought to be quiet,12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. She must be quiet.
because Adam was formed first and Eve afterwards,13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
and it was not Adam who was led astray but the woman who was led astray and fell into sin.14 Further, Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed.
Nevertheless, she will be saved by child-bearing, provided she lives a sensible life and is constant infaith and love and holiness.15 But she will be saved through motherhood, provided women persevere in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.
