Joshua 21

1 The heads of families of the Levites then came to the priest, Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun and theheads of families of the tribes of Israel-	1 Accesseruntque principes familiarum Levi ad Eleazarum sacerdotem, et Josue filium Nun, et ad duces cognationum per singulas tribus filiorum Israël :
2 they were then at Shiloh in Canaan. They said to them, 'Through Moses, Yahweh ordered us to begiven towns to live in, with their pasture lands for our livestock.'	2 locutique sunt ad eos in Silo terræ Chanaan, atque dixerunt : Dominus præcepit per manum Moysi, ut darentur nobis urbes ad habitandum, et suburbana earum ad alenda jumenta.
3 In compliance with Yahweh's order, the Israelites consequently and from their own heritage gave theLevites the fol owing towns with their pasture lands:	3 Dederuntque filii Israël de possessionibus suis juxta imperium Domini, civitates et suburbana earum.
4 Lots were cast for the clans of the Kohathites: to those Levites who were sons of Aaron the priest, felthirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin;	4 Egressaque est sors in familiam Caath filiorum Aaron sacerdotis, de tribubus Juda, et Simeon, et Benjamin, civitates tredecim :
5 to the other sons of Kohath, by clans,	5 et reliquis filiorum Caath, id est Levitis, qui superfuerant, de tribubus Ephraim, et Dan, et dimidia tribu Manasse, civitates decem.
6 fel ten towns from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. To the sons of Gershon,by clans, fel thirteen towns from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh inBashan.	6 Porro filii Gerson egressa est sors, ut acciperent de tribubus Issachar et Aser et Nephthali, dimidiaque tribu Manasse in Basan, civitates numero tredecim.
7 To the sons of Merari, by clans, fel twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.	7 Et filiis Merari per cognationes suas de tribubus Ruben et Gad et Zabulon urbes duodecim.
8 The Israelites assigned these towns and their pasture lands to the Levites by lot, as Yahweh hadordered through Moses.	8 Dederuntque filii Israël Levitis civitates et suburbana earum, sicut præcepit Dominus per manum Moysi, singulis sorte tribuentes.
9 From the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Simeon, they gave the towns named below.	9 De tribubus filiorum Juda et Simeon dedit Josue civitates, quarum ista sunt nomina,
10 The first portion was for the sons of Aaron, belonging to the clans of the Kohathites, to the sons ofLevi, since the first lot was theirs.	10 filiis Aaron per familias Caath Levitici generis (prima enim sors illis egressa est),
11 They gave them Kiriath-Arba, Anak's father's town -- now Hebron -- in the highlands of Judah, with itssurrounding pasture lands.	11 Cariatharbe patris Enac, quæ vocatur Hebron, in monte Juda, et suburbana ejus per circuitum.
12 The fields and vil ages of this town, however, they gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his property.	12 Agros vero et villas ejus dederat Caleb filio Jephone ad possidendum.
13 To the sons of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, a city of refuge for those who had kil ed, with itspasture lands, as wel as Libnah with its pasture lands,	13 Dedit ergo filiis Aaron sacerdotis Hebron confugii civitatem, ac suburbana ejus : et Lobnam cum suburbanis suis :
14 Jattir with its pasture lands, Eshtemoa with its pasture lands,	14 et Jether, et Esthemo,
15 Holon with its pasture lands, Debir with its pasture lands,	15 et Holon, et Dabir,
16 Ashan with its pasture lands, Juttah with its pasture lands, and Beth-Shemesh with its pasture lands:nine towns taken from these two tribes;	16 et Ain, et Jeta, et Bethsames, cum suburbanis suis : civitates novem de tribubus, ut dictum est, duabus.
17 and, from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pasture lands, Geba with its pasture lands,	17 De tribu autem filiorum Benjamin, Gabaon, et Gabæ,
18 Anathoth with its pasture lands and Almon with its pasture lands: four towns.	18 et Anathoth et Almon, cum suburbanis suis : civitates quatuor.
19 Total number of towns for the priests, the sons of Aaron: thirteen towns with their pasture lands.	19 Omnes simul civitates filiorum Aaron sacerdotis, tredecim, cum suburbanis suis.
20 As regards the clans of the sons of Kohath, those Levites stil left of the sons of Kohath, the towns oftheir lot were taken from the tribe of Ephraim.	20 Reliquis vero per familias filiorum Caath Levitici generis, hæc est data possessio.
21 They were given Shechem, a city of refuge for those who had kil ed, with its pasture lands, in thehighlands of Ephraim, as wel as Gezer with its pasture lands,	21 De tribu Ephraim urbes confugii, Sichem cum suburbanis suis in monte Ephraim, et Gazer
22 Kibzaim with its pasture lands, and Beth-Horon with its pasture lands: four towns;	22 et Cibsaim et Beth-horon, cum suburbanis suis, civitates quatuor.
23 from the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its pasture lands, Gibbethon with its pasture lands,	23 De tribu quoque Dan, Eltheco et Gabathon,
24 Aijalon with its pasture lands and Gath-Rimmon with its pasture lands: four towns;	24 et Ajalon et Gethremmon, cum suburbanis suis, civitates quatuor.
25 and, from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its pasture lands and Jibleam with its pasturelands: two towns.	25 Porro de dimidia tribu Manasse, Thanach et Gethremmon, cum suburbanis suis, civitates duæ.
26 In al : ten towns with their pasture lands for the remaining clans of the sons of Kohath.	26 Omnes civitates decem, et suburbana earum, datæ sunt filiis Caath inferioris gradus.
27 To the sons of Gershon, of the levitical clans, were given: from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan inBashan, a city of refuge for those who had kil ed, with its pasture lands, and Ashtaroth with its pasture lands --two towns;	27 Filiis quoque Gerson Levitici generis dedit de dimidia tribu Manasse confugii civitates, Gaulon in Basan, et Bosram, cum suburbanis suis, civitates duas.
28 from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its pasture lands, Dobrath with its pasture lands,	28 Porro de tribu Issachar, Cesion, et Dabereth,
29 Jarmuth with its pasture lands and En-Gannim with its pasture lands -- four towns;	29 et Jaramoth, et Engannim, cum suburbanis suis, civitates quatuor.
30 from the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its pasture lands, Abdon with its pasture lands,	30 De tribu autem Aser, Masal et Abdon,
31 Helkath with its pasture lands and Rehob with its pasture lands -- four towns;	31 et Helcath, et Rohob, cum suburbanis suis, civitates quatuor.
32 and, from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee, a city of refuge for those who had kil ed, with itspasture lands, Hammoth-Dor with its pasture lands and Kartan with its pasture lands -- three towns.	32 De tribu quoque Nephthali civitates confugii, Cedes in Galilæa, et Hammoth Dor, et Carthan, cum suburbanis suis, civitates tres.
33 Total number of towns of the Gershonites, by clans: thirteen towns with their pasture lands.	33 Omnes urbes familiarum Gerson, tredecim, cum suburbanis suis.
34 To the clans of the sons of Merari, the remainder of the Levites, fel : from the tribe of Zebulun,Jokneam with its pasture lands, Kartah with its pasture lands,	34 Filiis autem Merari Levitis inferioris gradus per familias suas data est de tribu Zabulon, Jecnam, et Cartha
35 Rimmon with its pasture lands and Nahalal with its pasture lands -- four towns;	35 et Damna et Naalol, civitates quatuor cum suburbanis suis.
36 on the other side of the Jordan opposite Jericho, from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer in the desert, on thetableland, a city of refuge for those who had killed, with its pasture lands, Jahaz with its pasture lands,	36 De tribu Ruben ultra Jordanem contra Jericho civitates refugii, Bosor in solitudine, Misor et Jaser et Jethson et Mephaath, civitates quatuor cum suburbanis suis.
37 Kedemoth with its pasture lands and Mephaath with its pasture lands -- four towns;	37 De tribu Gad civitates confugii, Ramoth in Galaad, et Manaim et Hesebon et Jazer, civitates quatuor cum suburbanis suis.
38 and, from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead, a city of refuge for those who had killed, with its pasturelands, Mahanaim with its pasture lands,	38 Omnes urbes filiorum Merari per familias et cognationes suas, duodecim.
39 Heshbon with its pasture lands and Jazer with its pasture lands -- four towns.	39 Itaque civitates universæ Levitarum in medio possessionis filiorum Israël fuerunt quadraginta octo
40 Total number of towns forming the lot of the sons of Merari by clans, of the remaining levitical clans:twelve towns.	40 cum suburbanis suis, singulæ per familias distributæ.
41 The total number of towns for the Levites in Israelite territory was forty-eight towns with their pasture lands.	41 Deditque Dominus Deus Israëli omnem terram, quam traditurum se patribus eorum juraverat : et possederunt illam, atque habitaverunt in ea.
42 These towns consisted in each case of the town itself and the pasture land round it. This was thecase with all the towns.	42 Dataque est ab eo pax in omnes per circuitum nationes : nullusque eis hostium resistere ausus est, sed cuncti in eorum ditionem redacti sunt.
43 This was how Yahweh gave the Israelites the entire country which he had sworn to give to theirancestors. They took possession of it and settled in it.	43 Ne unum quidem verbum, quod illis præstiturum se esse promiserat, irritum fuit, sed rebus expleta sunt omnia.
44 Yahweh granted them tranquil ity on all their frontiers just as he had sworn to their ancestors and, ofal their enemies, not one succeeded in resisting them. Yahweh put al their enemies at their mercy.
45 Of al the promises that Yahweh had made to the House of Israel, not one failed; al were fulfilled.
