NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Children, be obedient to your parents in the Lord -- that is what uprightness demands.1 Filii, oboedite parentibus vestris in Domino; hoc enim est iu stum.
The first commandment that has a promise attached to it is: Honour your father and your mother,2 Honora patrem tuum et matrem, quod est mandatum primum cum promissione,
and the promise is: so that you may have long life and prosper in the land.3 utbene sit tibi, et sis longaevus super terram.
And parents, never drive your children to resentment but bring them up with correction and adviceinspired by the Lord.4 Et, patres, nolite ad iracundiamprovocare filios vestros, sed educate illos in disciplina et correptione Domini.
Slaves, be obedient to those who are, according to human reckoning, your masters, with deep respectand sincere loyalty, as you are obedient to Christ:5 Servi, oboedite dominis carnalibus cum timore et tremore, in simplicitatecordis vestri, sicut Christo;
not only when you are under their eye, as if you had only to please human beings, but as slaves ofChrist who wholeheartedly do the wil of God.6 non ad oculum servientes, quasi hominibusplacentes, sed ut servi Christi facientes voluntatem Dei ex animo;
Work wil ingly for the sake of the Lord and not for the sake of human beings.7 cum bonavoluntate servientes, sicut Domino et non hominibus,
Never forget that everyone, whether a slave or a free man, wil be rewarded by the Lord for whateverwork he has done wel .8 scientes quoniamunusquisque, si quid fecerit bonum, hoc percipiet a Domino, sive servus siveliber.
And those of you who are employers, treat your slaves in the same spirit; do without threats, and neverforget that they and you have the same Master in heaven and there is no favouritism with him.9 Et, domini, eadem facite illis, remittentes minas, scientes quia et illorum etvester Dominus est in caelis, et personarum acceptio non est apud eum.
Finally, grow strong in the Lord, with the strength of his power.10 De cetero confortamini in Domino et in potentia virtutis eius.
Put on the ful armour of God so as to be able to resist the devil's tactics.11 Induitearmaturam Dei, ut possitis stare adversus insidias Diaboli.
For it is not against human enemies that we have to struggle, but against the principalities and theruling forces who are masters of the darkness in this world, the spirits of evil in the heavens.12 Quia non estnobis colluctatio adversus sanguinem et carnem sed adversus principatus,adversus potestates, adversus mundi rectores tenebrarum harum, adversusspiritalia nequitiae in caelestibus.
That is why you must take up al God's armour, or you wil not be able to put up any resistance on theevil day, or stand your ground even though you exert yourselves to the ful .13 Propterea accipite armaturam Dei, ut possitis resistere in die malo et,omnibus perfectis, stare.
So stand your ground, with truth a belt round your waist, and uprightness a breastplate,14 State ergo succincti lumbos vestros in veritate etinduti loricam iustitiae
wearing for shoes on your feet the eagerness to spread the gospel of peace15 et calceati pedes in praeparatione evangelii pacis,
and always carrying the shield of faith so that you can use it to quench the burning arrows of the EvilOne.16 inomnibus sumentes scutum fidei, in quo possitis omnia tela Maligni igneaexstinguere;
And then you must take salvation as your helmet and the sword of the Spirit, that is, the word of God.17 et galeam salutis assumite et gladium Spiritus, quod est verbumDei;
In al your prayer and entreaty keep praying in the Spirit on every possible occasion. Never get tired ofstaying awake to pray for al God's holy people,18 per omnem orationem et obsecrationem orantes omni tempore in Spiritu, etin ipso vigilantes in omni instantia et obsecratione pro omnibus sanctis
and pray for me to be given an opportunity to open my mouth and fearlessly make known the mysteryof the gospel19 etpro me, ut detur mihi sermo in aperitione oris mei cum fiducia notum faceremysterium evangelii,
of which I am an ambassador in chains; pray that in proclaiming it I may speak as fearlessly as I oughtto.20 pro quo legatione fungor in catena, ut in ipso audeam,prout oportet me, loqui.
So that you know, as well, what is happening to me and what I am doing, my dear friend Tychicus, mytrustworthy helper in the Lord, wil tel you everything.21 Ut autem et vos sciatis, quae circa me sunt, quid agam, omnia nota vobisfaciet Tychicus, carissimus frater et fidelis minister in Domino,
I am sending him to you precisely for this purpose, to give you news about us and encourage youthoroughly.22 quem misiad vos in hoc ipsum, ut cognoscatis, quae circa nos sunt, et consoletur cordavestra.
May God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ grant peace, love and faith to al the brothers.23 Pax fratribus et caritas cum fide a Deo Patre et Domino Iesu Christo.
May grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ, in life imperishable.24 Gratia cum omnibus, qui diligunt Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum inincorruptione.
