NEW JERUSALEMSTUTTGARTENSIA-DELITZSCH
After this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1
Now in Jerusalem next to the Sheep Pool there is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew, which has fiveporticos;2 וּבִירוּשָׁלַיִם בְּרֵכָה קְרוֹבָה לְשַׁעַר הַצֹּאן וּשְׁמָהּ בְּלָשׁוֹן עִבְרִית בֵּית־חַסְדָּא וְלָהּ חֲמִשָּׁה אֻלַמִּים
and under these were crowds of sick people, blind, lame, paralysed.3 שָׁמָּה שָׁכְבוּ חוֹלִים וְעִוְרִים וּפִסְחִים וִיבֵשֵׁי־כֹחַ לָרֹב וְהֵמָּה מְיַחֲלִים לִתְנוּעַת הַמָּיִם
One man there had an il ness which had lasted thirty-eight years,5 וְאִישׁ הָיָה שָׁם אֲשֶׁר חָלָה חָלְיוֹ זֶה שְׁלשִׁים וּשְׁמֹנֶה שָׁנָה
and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in that condition for a long time, he said,'Do you want to be wel again?'6 וַיַּרְא אֹתוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ שֹׁכֵב וַיֵּדַע כִּי אָרְכוּ־לוֹ יְמֵי חָלְיוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הֲתַחְפֹּץ לְהֵרָפֵא
'Sir,' replied the sick man, 'I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while Iam stil on the way, someone else gets down there before me.'7 וַיַּעַן הַחוֹלֶה אֲדֹנִי אֵין־אִישׁ אִתִּי אֲשֶׁר יַשְׁלִיכֵנִי בְּהֵרָעֵשׁ הַמַּיִם אֶל־הַבְּרֵכָה וּבְטֶרֶם אָבֹא וְיָרַד אַחֵר לְפָנָי
Jesus said, 'Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around.'8
The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and started to walk around. Now that dayhappened to be the Sabbath,9 וּכְרֶגַע שָׁב הָאִישׁ לְאֵיתָנוֹ וַיִּשָּׂא אֶת־מִשְׁכָּבוֹ וַיִּתְהַלָּךְ וְהַיּוֹם הַהוּא יוֹם שַׁבָּת הָיָה
so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, 'It is the Sabbath; you are not al owed to carry yoursleeping-mat.'10 וַיֹּאמְרוּ הַיְּהוּדִים אֶל־הָאִישׁ הַנִּרְפָּא שַׁבָּת הַיּוֹם אָסוּר לְךָ לָשֵׂאת אֶת־מִשְׁכָּבֶךָ
He replied, 'But the man who cured me told me, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around." '11
They asked, 'Who is the man who said to you, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around"? '12
The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared, as the place was crowded.13
After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, 'Now you are wel again, do not sin any more, orsomething worse may happen to you.'14 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי־כֵן וַיִּמְצָאֵהוּ יֵשׁוּעַ בְּבֵית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הִנֵּה נִרְפָּא־לָךְ אַל־תּוֹסִיף לַחֲטֹא פֶּן־תְּאֻנֶּה אֵלֶיךָ רָעָה גְּדוֹלָה מִזֹּאת
The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him.15 וַיֵּלֶךְ הָאִישׁ וַיַּגֵּד לַיְּהוּדִים כִּי־יֵשׁוּעַ הוּא אֲשֶׁר רְפָאוֹ
It was because he did things like this on the Sabbath that the Jews began to harass Jesus.16
His answer to them was, 'My Father stil goes on working, and I am at work, too.'17 וַיַּעַן אֹתָם יֵשׁוּעַ אָבִי פֹּעֵל עַד־עַתָּה וְגַם־אָנֹכִי פֹּעֵל
But that only made the Jews even more intent on kil ing him, because not only was he breaking theSabbath, but he spoke of God as his own Father and so made himself God's equal.18 אָז יוֹסִיפוּ הַיְּהוּדִים לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ כִּי מִלְּבַד אֲשֶׁר חִלֵּל אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּת עוֹד אָמַר כִּי הָאֱלֹהִים הוּא אָבִיו וַיִּדַּמֶּה לֵאלֹהִים
To this Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, by himself the Son can do nothing; he can do only what hesees the Father doing: and whatever the Father does the Son does too.19 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם לֹא־יוּכַל הַבֵּן לַעֲשׂוֹת דָּבָר מִנַּפְשׁוֹ בִּלְתִּי אֵת אֲשֶׁר־יִרְאֶה אֶת־אָבִיו עֹשֶׂה כִּי אֶת־אֲשֶׁר עֹשֶׂה הוּא גַּם־הַבֵּן יַעֲשֶׂה כָּמֹהוּ
For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he himself does, and he wil show him evengreater things than these, works that will astonish you.20 כִּי הָאָב אֹהֵב אֶת־הַבֵּן וּמַרְאֶה אֹתוֹ כֹּל אֲשֶׁר יַעֲשֶׂה וְעוֹד מַעֲשִׂים גְּדוֹלִים מֵאֵלֶּה יַרְאֵהוּ לְמַעַן תִּתַּמָּהוּ
Thus, as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to anyone he chooses;21
for the Father judges no one; he has entrusted all judgement to the Son,22 כִּי הָאָב לֹא־יָדִין אִישׁ כִּי אִם־כָּל־הַמִּשְׁפָּט נָתַן לַבֵּן לְמַעַן יְכַבְּדוּ כֻלָּם אֶת־הַבֵּן כַּאֲשֶׁר יְכַבְּדוּ אֶת־הָאָב
so that al may honour the Son as they honour the Father. Whoever refuses honour to the Son refuseshonour to the Father who sent him.23 מִי אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יְכַבֵּד אֶת־הַבֵּן גַּם אֶת־הָאָב אֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחוֹ אֵינֶנּוּ מְכַבֵּד
In al truth I tel you, whoever listens to my words, and believes in the one who sent me, has eternallife; without being brought to judgement such a person has passed from death to life.24 אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם הַשֹּׁמֵעַ דְּבָרַי וּמַאֲמִין לְשֹׁלְחִי יֶשׁ־לוֹ חַיֵּי עוֹלָמִים וְלֹא יָבֹא בַּמִּשְׁפָּט כִּי־עָבַר מִמָּוֶת לַחַיִּים
In al truth I tel you, the hour is coming -- indeed it is already here -- when the dead wil hear the voiceof the Son of God, and al who hear it wil live.25 אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי־תָבוֹא שָׁעָה וְעַתָּה הִיא אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁמְעוּ הַמֵּתִים אֶת־קוֹל בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִים וְהַשֹּׁמְעִים חָיֹה יִחְיוּ
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself;26
and, because he is the Son of man, has granted him power to give judgement.27 וְאַף־שָׁלְטָן נָתַן לוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת מִשְׁפָּט כִּי בֶן־אָדָם הוּא
Do not be surprised at this, for the hour is coming when the dead wil leave their graves at the sound ofhis voice:28 אַל־תִּתְמְהוּ עַל־זֹאת כִּי הִנֵּה שָׁעָה בָאָה אֲשֶׁר כָּל־שֹׁכְנֵי קֶבֶר אֶת־קוֹלוֹ יִשְׁמָעוּן
those who did good will come forth to life; and those who did evil will come forth to judgement.29 וְיֵצְאוּ עֹשֵׂי הַטּוֹב לִתְקוּמַת הַחַיִּים וְעֹשֵׂי הָרַע לִתְקוּמַת הַמִּשְׁפָּט
By myself I can do nothing; I can judge only as I am told to judge, and my judging is just, because Iseek to do not my own wil but the wil of him who sent me.30 לֹא אוּכַל לַעֲשׂוֹת דָּבָר מִנַּפְשִׁי כַּאֲשֶׁר אֶשְׁמַע כֵּן אֶשְׁפֹּט וּמִשְׁפָּטִי מִשְׁפַּט־צֶדֶק כִּי לֹא אֲבַקֵּשׁ רְצוֹנִי כִּי אִם־רְצוֹן הָאָב אֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחָנִי
Were I to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be true;31
but there is another witness who speaks on my behalf, and I know that his testimony is true.32 יֵשׁ אַחֵר הַמֵּעִיד עָלָי וְיָדַעְתִּי כִּי עֵדוּתוֹ אֲשֶׁר־הוּא מֵעִיד עָלַי נֶאֱמָנָה הִיא
You sent messengers to John, and he gave his testimony to the truth-33 אַתֶּם שְׁלַחְתֶּם אֶל־יוֹחָנָן וְהוּא הֵעִיד עַל־הָאֱמֶת
not that I depend on human testimony; no, it is for your salvation that I mention it.34 וַאֲנִי אֵינֶנִּי לֹקֵחַ עֵדוּת מֵאָדָם אַךְ אָמַרְתִּי זֹאת לְמַעַן תִּוָּשֵׁעוּן
John was a lamp lit and shining and for a time you were content to enjoy the light that he gave.35
But my testimony is greater than John's: the deeds my Father has given me to perform, these samedeeds of mine testify that the Father has sent me.36 וַאֲנִי יֶשׁ־לִי עֵדוּת גְּדוֹלָה מֵעֵדוּת יוֹחָנָן כִּי הַמַּעֲשִׂים אֲשֶׁר נָתַן־לִי אָבִי לְהַשְׁלִימָם הַמַּעֲשִׂים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה מְעִידִים עָלַי כִּי הָאָב שְׁלָחָנִי
Besides, the Father who sent me bears witness to me himself. You have never heard his voice, youhave never seen his shape,37 וְהָאָב אֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחַנִי הוּא מֵעִיד עָלָי וְאַתֶּם אֶת־קוֹלוֹ לֹא־שְׁמַעְתֶּם מֵעוֹלָם וּתְמוּנָתוֹ לֹא רְאִיתֶם
and his word finds no home in you because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent.38 וּדְבָרוֹ אֵינֶנּוּ שֹׁכֵן בְּקִרְבְּכֶם כִּי אֵינְכֶם מַאֲמִינִים לִשְׁלוּחוֹ
You pore over the scriptures, believing that in them you can find eternal life; it is these scriptures thattestify to me,39 דִּרְשׁוּ בַכְּתוּבִים אֲשֶׁר תַּחְשְׁבוּ שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָכֶם חַיֵּי עוֹלָמִים בָּהֶם וְהֵמָּה הַמְּעִידִים עָלָי
and yet you refuse to come to me to receive life!40 וְאַתֶּם אֵינְכֶם אֹבִים לָבוֹא אֵלָי לִהְיוֹת לָכֶם חַיִּים
Human glory means nothing to me.41 לֹא־אֶקַּח כָּבוֹד מִבְּנֵי אָדָם
Besides, I know you too well: you have no love of God in you.42 אָכֵן יָדַעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם כִּי אֵין־אַהֲבַת אֱלֹהִים בְּקִרְבְּכֶם
I have come in the name of my Father and you refuse to accept me; if someone else should come inhis own name you would accept him.43 אֲנִי הִנֵּה בָאתִי בְּשֵׁם אָבִי וְלֹא קִבַּלְתֶּם אֹתִי וְאִם־יָבֹא אַחֵר בְּשֵׁם עַצְמוֹ אֹתוֹ תְקַבֵּלוּ
How can you believe, since you look to each other for glory and are not concerned with the glory thatcomes from the one God?44 אֵיךְ תּוּכְלוּ לְהַאֲמִין אַתֶּם הַלֹּקְחִים כָּבוֹד אִישׁ מֵרֵעֵהוּ וְאֶת־הַכָּבוֹד אֲשֶׁר מֵאֵת־הָאֱלֹהִים הַיָּחִיד לֹא תְבַקֵּשׁוּ
Do not imagine that I am going to accuse you before the Father: you have placed your hopes onMoses, and Moses wil be the one who accuses you.45 אַל־תַּחְשְׁבוּ כִּי אָנֹכִי אֶטְעַן נֶגְדְכֶם לִפְנֵי אָבִי משֶׁה הוּא הַטֹּעֵן נֶגְדְכֶם אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ תְּיַחֵלוּ
If you real y believed him you would believe me too, since it was about me that he was writing;46
but if you wil not believe what he wrote, how can you believe what I say?47 וְאִם־לִכְתָבָיו אֵינְכֶם מַאֲמִינִים אֵיכָה לִדְבָרַי תַּאֲמִינוּ
