NEW JERUSALEMKING JAMES BIBLE
After this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now in Jerusalem next to the Sheep Pool there is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew, which has fiveporticos;2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
and under these were crowds of sick people, blind, lame, paralysed.3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
One man there had an il ness which had lasted thirty-eight years,5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in that condition for a long time, he said,'Do you want to be wel again?'6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
'Sir,' replied the sick man, 'I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while Iam stil on the way, someone else gets down there before me.'7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
Jesus said, 'Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around.'8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and started to walk around. Now that dayhappened to be the Sabbath,9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, 'It is the Sabbath; you are not al owed to carry yoursleeping-mat.'10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
He replied, 'But the man who cured me told me, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around." '11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
They asked, 'Who is the man who said to you, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around"? '12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared, as the place was crowded.13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, 'Now you are wel again, do not sin any more, orsomething worse may happen to you.'14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him.15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
It was because he did things like this on the Sabbath that the Jews began to harass Jesus.16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
His answer to them was, 'My Father stil goes on working, and I am at work, too.'17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
But that only made the Jews even more intent on kil ing him, because not only was he breaking theSabbath, but he spoke of God as his own Father and so made himself God's equal.18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
To this Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, by himself the Son can do nothing; he can do only what hesees the Father doing: and whatever the Father does the Son does too.19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he himself does, and he wil show him evengreater things than these, works that will astonish you.20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Thus, as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to anyone he chooses;21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
for the Father judges no one; he has entrusted all judgement to the Son,22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
so that al may honour the Son as they honour the Father. Whoever refuses honour to the Son refuseshonour to the Father who sent him.23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
In al truth I tel you, whoever listens to my words, and believes in the one who sent me, has eternallife; without being brought to judgement such a person has passed from death to life.24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
In al truth I tel you, the hour is coming -- indeed it is already here -- when the dead wil hear the voiceof the Son of God, and al who hear it wil live.25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself;26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
and, because he is the Son of man, has granted him power to give judgement.27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
Do not be surprised at this, for the hour is coming when the dead wil leave their graves at the sound ofhis voice:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
those who did good will come forth to life; and those who did evil will come forth to judgement.29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
By myself I can do nothing; I can judge only as I am told to judge, and my judging is just, because Iseek to do not my own wil but the wil of him who sent me.30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
Were I to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be true;31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
but there is another witness who speaks on my behalf, and I know that his testimony is true.32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
You sent messengers to John, and he gave his testimony to the truth-33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
not that I depend on human testimony; no, it is for your salvation that I mention it.34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
John was a lamp lit and shining and for a time you were content to enjoy the light that he gave.35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
But my testimony is greater than John's: the deeds my Father has given me to perform, these samedeeds of mine testify that the Father has sent me.36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
Besides, the Father who sent me bears witness to me himself. You have never heard his voice, youhave never seen his shape,37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
and his word finds no home in you because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent.38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
You pore over the scriptures, believing that in them you can find eternal life; it is these scriptures thattestify to me,39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
and yet you refuse to come to me to receive life!40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
Human glory means nothing to me.41 I receive not honour from men.
Besides, I know you too well: you have no love of God in you.42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
I have come in the name of my Father and you refuse to accept me; if someone else should come inhis own name you would accept him.43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
How can you believe, since you look to each other for glory and are not concerned with the glory thatcomes from the one God?44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
Do not imagine that I am going to accuse you before the Father: you have placed your hopes onMoses, and Moses wil be the one who accuses you.45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
If you real y believed him you would believe me too, since it was about me that he was writing;46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
but if you wil not believe what he wrote, how can you believe what I say?47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
