1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.1 En el principio existía el Verbo, y el Verbo estaba junto a Dios, y el Verbo era Dios.
2 He was with God in the beginning.2 Él estaba en el principio junto a Dios.
3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.3 Por medio de él se hizo todo, y sin él no se hizo nada de cuanto se ha hecho.
4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;4 En él estaba la vida, y la vida era la luz de los hombres.
5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.5 Y la luz brilla en la tiniebla, y la tiniebla no lo recibió.
6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.6 Surgió un hombre enviado por Dios, que se llamaba Juan:
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.7 este venía como testigo, para dar testimonio de la luz, para que todos creyeran por medio de él.
8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.8 No era él la luz, sino el que daba testimonio de la luz.
9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.9 El Verbo era la luz verdadera, que alumbra a todo hombre, viniendo al mundo.
10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.10 En el mundo estaba; | el mundo se hizo por medio de él, y el mundo no lo conoció.
11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.11 Vino a su casa, y los suyos no lo recibieron.
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name12 Pero a cuantos lo recibieron, les dio poder de ser hijos de Dios, a los que creen en su nombre.
13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.13 Estos no han nacido de sangre, ni de deseo de carne, | ni de deseo de varón, sino que han nacido de Dios.
14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.14 Y el Verbo se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros, y hemos contemplado su gloria: gloria como del Unigénito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad.
15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'15 Juan da testimonio de él y grita diciendo: «Este es de quien dije: el que viene detrás de mí se ha puesto delante de mí, porque existía antes que yo».
16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,16 Pues de su plenitud todos hemos recibido, gracia tras gracia.
17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.17 Porque la ley se dio por medio de Moisés, la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por medio de Jesucristo.
18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.18 A Dios nadie lo ha visto jamás: Dios unigénito, que está en el seno del Padre, es quien lo ha dado a conocer.
19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'19 Y este es el testimonio de Juan, cuando los judíos enviaron desde Jerusalén sacerdotes y levitas a que le preguntaran: «¿Tú quién eres?».
20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'20 Él confesó y no negó; confesó: «Yo no soy el Mesías».
21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'21 Le preguntaron: «¿Entonces, qué? ¿Eres tú Elías?». Él dijo: «No lo soy». «¿Eres tú el Profeta?». Respondió: «No».
22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'22 Y le dijeron: «¿Quién eres, para que podamos dar una respuesta a los que nos han enviado? ¿Qué dices de ti mismo?».
23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'23 Él contestó: «Yo soy la voz que grita en el desierto: “Allanad el camino del Señor”, como dijo el profeta Isaías».
24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,24 Entre los enviados había fariseos
25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'25 y le preguntaron: «Entonces, ¿por qué bautizas si tú no eres el Mesías, ni Elías, ni el Profeta?».
26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-26 Juan les respondió: «Yo bautizo con agua; en medio de vosotros hay uno que no conocéis,
27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'27 el que viene detrás de mí, y al que no soy digno de desatar la correa de la sandalia».
28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.28 Esto pasaba en Betania, en la otra orilla del Jordán, donde Juan estaba bautizando.
29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.29 Al día siguiente, al ver Juan a Jesús que venía hacia él, exclamó: «Este es el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo.
30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."30 Este es aquel de quien yo dije: “Tras de mí viene un hombre que está por delante de mí, porque existía antes que yo”.
31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'31 Yo no lo conocía, pero he salido a bautizar con agua, para que sea manifestado a Israel».
32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.32 Y Juan dio testimonio diciendo: «He contemplado al Espíritu que bajaba del cielo como una paloma, y se posó sobre él.
33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."33 Yo no lo conocía, pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua me dijo: “Aquel sobre quien veas bajar el Espíritu y posarse sobre él, ese es el que bautiza con Espíritu Santo”.
34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'34 Y yo lo he visto y he dado testimonio de que este es el Hijo de Dios».
35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,35 Al día siguiente, estaba Juan con dos de sus discípulos y,
36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'36 fijándose en Jesús que pasaba, dice: «Este es el Cordero de Dios».
37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.37 Los dos discípulos oyeron sus palabras y siguieron a Jesús.
38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'38 Jesús se volvió y, al ver que lo seguían, les pregunta: «¿Qué buscáis?». Ellos le contestaron: «Rabí (que significa Maestro), ¿dónde vives?».
39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.39 Él les dijo: «Venid y veréis». Entonces fueron, vieron dónde vivía y se quedaron con él aquel día; era como la hora décima.
40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.40 Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro, era uno de los dos que oyeron a Juan y siguieron a Jesús;
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-41 encuentra primero a su hermano Simón y le dice: «Hemos encontrado al Mesías (que significa Cristo)».
42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.42 Y lo llevó a Jesús. Jesús se le quedó mirando y le dijo: «Tú eres Simón, el hijo de Juan; tú te llamarás Cefas (que se traduce: Pedro)».
43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'43 Al día siguiente, determinó Jesús salir para Galilea; encuentra a Felipe y le dice: «Sígueme».
44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.44 Felipe era de Betsaida, ciudad de Andrés y de Pedro.
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'45 Felipe encuentra a Natanael y le dice: «Aquel de quien escribieron Moisés en la ley y los profetas, lo hemos encontrado: Jesús, hijo de José, de Nazaret».
46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'46 Natanael le replicó: «¿De Nazaret puede salir algo bueno?». Felipe le contestó: «Ven y verás».
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'47 Vio Jesús que se acercaba Natanael y dijo de él: «Ahí tenéis a un israelita de verdad, en quien no hay engaño».
48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'48 Natanael le contesta: «¿De qué me conoces?». Jesús le responde: «Antes de que Felipe te llamara, cuando estabas debajo de la higuera, te vi».
49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'49 Natanael respondió: «Rabí, tú eres el Hijo de Dios, tú eres el Rey de Israel».
50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'50 Jesús le contestó: «¿Por haberte dicho que te vi debajo de la higuera, crees? Has de ver cosas mayores».
51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'51 Y le añadió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: veréis el cielo abierto y a los ángeles de Dios subir y bajar sobre el Hijo del hombre».
