NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.	1 בראשית היה הדבר והדבר היה את האלהים ואלהים היה הדבר
2 He was with God in the beginning.	2 הוא היה בראשית אצל האלהים
3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.	3 הכל נהיה על ידו ומבלעדיו לא נהיה כל אשר נהיה
4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;	4 בו היו חיים והחיים היו אור בני האדם
5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.	5 והאור בחשך זרח והחשך לא השיגו
6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.	6 ויהי איש שלוח מאת האלהים ושמו יוחנן
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.	7 הוא בא לעדות להעיד על האור למען יאמינו כלם על ידו
8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.	8 הוא לא היה האור כי אם להעיד על האור
9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.	9 האור האמתי המאיר לכל אדם היה בא אל העולם
10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.	10 בעולם היה ועל ידו נהיה העולם והעולם לא הכירו
11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.	11 הוא בא אל אשר לו ואשר המה לו לא קבלהו
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name	12 והמקבלים אתו נתן עז למו להיות בנים לאלהים המאמינים בשמו
13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.	13 אשר לא מדם ולא מחפץ הבשר אף לא מחפץ גבר כי אם מאלהים נולדו
14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.	14 והדבר נהיה בשר וישכן בתוכנו ונחזה תפארתו כתפארת בן יחיד לאביו רב חסד ואמת
15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'	15 ויוחנן מעיד עליו ויקרא לאמר הנה זה הוא אשר אמרתי עליו הבא אחרי היה לפני כי קדם לי היה
16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,	16 וממלואו לקחנו כלנו חסד על חסד
17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.	17 כי התורה נתנה ביד משה והחסד והאמת באו על ידי ישוע המשיח
18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.	18 את האלהים לא ראה איש מעולם הבן היחיד אשר בחיק האב הוא הודיע
19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'	19 וזאת היא עדות יוחנן בשלח היהודים מירושלים כהנים ולוים לשאל אתו מי אתה
20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'	20 ויודה ולא כחש ויודה לאמר אני אינני המשיח
21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'	21 וישאלו אתו מי אפוא אתה האתה אליהו ויאמר אינני האתה הנביא ויען לא
22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'	22 ויאמרו אליו מי זה אתה למען נשיב לשלחינו דבר מה תאמר עליך
23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'	23 ויאמר אני קול קורא במדבר פנו דרך יהוה כאשר דבר ישעיהו הנביא
24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,	24 והמשלחים היו מן הפרושים
25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'	25 וישאלהו ויאמרו אליו מדוע אפוא מטביל אתה אם אינך המשיח או אליה או הנביא
26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-	26 ויען אתם יוחנן ויאמר אנכי מטביל במים ובתוככם עומד אשר לא ידעתם אתו
27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'	27 הוא הבא אחרי אשר היה לפני ואני נקלתי מהתיר שרוך נעליו
28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.	28 זאת היתה בבית עברה מעבר לירדן מקום אשר יוחנן מטביל שם
29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.	29 ויהי ממחרת וירא יוחנן את ישוע בא אליו ויאמר הנה שה האלהים הנשא חטאת העולם
30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."	30 זה הוא אשר אמרתי עליו אחרי יבא איש אשר היה לפני כי קדם לי היה
31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'	31 ואני לא ידעתיו כי אם בעבור יגלה בישראל באתי אני לטבל במים
32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.	32 ויעד יוחנן ויאמר חזיתי הרוח כדמות יונה ירדת משמים ותנח עליו
33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."	33 ואני לא ידעתיו אולם השלח אתי לטבל במים הוא אמר אלי את אשר תראה הרוח ירדת ונחה עליו הנה זה הוא אשר יטבל ברוח הקדש
34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'	34 ואני ראיתי ואעידה כי זה הוא בן האלהים
35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,	35 ויהי ממחרת ויסף יוחנן ויעמד ושנים מתלמידיו עמו
36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'	36 ויבט אל ישוע והוא מתהלך ויאמר הנה שה האלהים
37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.	37 ושני תלמידיו שמעו את דברו וילכו אחרי ישוע
38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'	38 ויפן ישוע אחריו וירא אתם הלכים אחריו ויאמר אליהם מה תבקשו ויאמרו אליו רבי פרושו מורי איפה תלין
39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.	39 ויאמר אליהם באו וראו ויבאו ויראו את מקום מלונו וישבו עמו ביום ההוא והעת כשעה העשירית
40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.	40 ואחד מן השנים אשר שמעו מאת יוחנן והלכו אחריו הוא אנדרי אחי שמעון פטרוס
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-	41 הוא פגש בראשונה את שמעון אחיו ויאמר אליו את המשיח מצאנו אשר תרגומו כריסטוס
42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.	42 ויוליכהו אל ישוע ויהי כהביט אליו ישוע ויאמר שמעון בן יונה לך יקרא כיפא אשר תרגומו פטרוס
43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'	43 ויהי ממחרת ויואל ישוע לצאת הגלילה וימצא את פילפוס ויאמר אליו לך אחרי
44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.	44 ופילפוס היה מבית צידה עיר אנדרי ופטרוס
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'	45 ויפגע פילפוס את נתנאל ויאמר אליו מצאנו אתו אשר כתב משה בספר התורה והנביאים את ישוע בן יוסף מנצרת
46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'	46 ויאמר אליו נתנאל המנצרת תצא לנו טובה ויאמר אליו בא וראה
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'	47 וירא ישוע את נתנאל בא לקראתו ויאמר עליו הנה באמת בן ישראל אשר אין בו רמיה
48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'	48 ויאמר אליו נתנאל מאין ידעתני ויען ישוע ויאמר לו בטרם קרא לך פילפוס בהיותך תחת התאנה אנכי ראיתיך
49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'	49 ויען נתנאל ויאמר אליו רבי אתה בן אלהים אתה הוא מלך ישראל
50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'	50 ויען ישוע ויאמר אליו על אמרי לך כי תחת התאנה ראיתיך האמנת הנה גדלות מאלה תראה
51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'	51 ויאמר אליו אמן אמן אני אמר לכם מעתה תראו השמים נפתחים ומלאכי אלהים עלים וירדים על בן אלהים
