1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.	1 - In principio era il Verbo e il Verbo era presso Dio e il Verbo era Dio.
2 He was with God in the beginning.	2 Egli era al principio presso Dio.
3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.	3 Tutto per mezzo di lui è stato fatto e senza di lui non è stato fatto nulla di ciò ch'è stato fatto.
4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;	4 In lui era vita, e la vita era la luce degli uomini.
5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.	5 E la luce splende fra le tenebre e le tenebre non l'hanno accolta.
6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.	6 Ci fu un uomo inviato da Dio; di nome Giovanni.
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.	7 Egli venne in testimonianza per rendere testimonianza alla luce, affinchè tutti credessero per lui;
8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.	8 egli non era la luce, ma venne per rendere testimonianza alla luce.
9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.	9 Era la luce vera, che illumina ogni uomo che viene a questo mondo.
10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.	10 Egli era nel mondo e il mondo per mezzo di lui fu fatto, e il mondo non l'ha conosciuto.
11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.	11 È venuto nella sua proprietà e i suoi non l'hanno accolto.
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name	12 A tutti quelli però che l'hanno accolto, a quelli che credono nel suo nome, ha dato il potere di diventare figliuoli di Dio;
13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.	13 i quali, non da sangue nè da volontà di carne, nè da volontà di uomo, ma da Dio son nati.
14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.	14 Il Verbo si è fatto carne ed abitò tra noi; e noi ne abbiamo veduta la gloria, gloria eguale a quella dell'Unigenito del Padre, pieno di grazia e di verità.
15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'	15 Giovanni gli rende testimonianza e grida in questi termini: «Ecco colui del quale dissi: - Chi verrà dopo di me è stato fatto prima di me, perchè egli era prima di me - ».
16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,	16 E della pienezza di lui tutti abbiam ricevuto, e grazia su grazia.
17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.	17 Perchè la legge è stata data da Mosè; la gloria e la verità sono venute da Gesù Cristo.
18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.	18 Nessuno ha veduto mai Dio; il Figlio unigenito, che è nel seno del Padre, ce l'ha fatto conoscere.
19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'	19 Ed ecco la testimonianza resa da Giovanni, quando i Giudei mandarono da Gerusalemme sacerdoti e Leviti per domandargli: «Chi sei tu?».
20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'	20 Ed egli affermò e non negò e confessò: «Non sono io il Cristo».
21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'	21 Allora gli domandarono: «Chi sei dunque? Sei tu Elia?». Egli rispose: «Non lo sono». «Sei tu il profeta?». E rispose: «No».
22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'	22 Allora gli dissero: «Chi sei dunque? Affinchè possiamo portare una risposta a coloro che ci hanno mandato. Che cosa dici di te stesso?».
23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'	23 Egli replicò: «Io sono la voce di colui che grida nel deserto: - Raddrizzate la via del Signore -, come ha detto il profeta Isaia».
24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,	24 Ora quegl'inviati erano Farisei
25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'	25 e gli domandarono: «Perchè dunque battezzi, se non sei nè il Cristo, nè Elia, nè il Profeta?».
26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-	26 Giovanni rispose loro: «Io battezzo nell'acqua; ma in mezzo a voi sta uno che voi non conoscete.
27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'	27 È colui che verrà dopo di me, ma che è stato prima di me e del quale io non sono degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari».
28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.	28 Questo accadeva in Betania oltre il Giordano, dove Giovanni stava a battezzare.
29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.	29 Il giorno dopo Giovanni vide Gesù venire a sè, e gridò: «Ecco l'Agnello di Dio, che toglie il peccato del mondo.
30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."	30 Egli è colui del quale ho detto: - Dopo di me viene un uomo che mi ha preceduto, perchè era prima di me. -
31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'	31 Ed io non lo conoscevo; ma per questo sono venuto a battezzare con acqua, affinchè fosse manifestato in Israele».
32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.	32 E Giovanni rese la sua testimonianza così: «Ho veduto lo Spirito discendere, come una colomba, dal cielo e posarsi sopra di lui.
33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."	33 E io non lo conoscevo; ma chi mi ha mandato a battezzare nell'acqua, mi ha detto: - Colui sul quale vedrai scendere e fermarsi lo Spirito, è quegli stesso che battezza nello Spirito Santo. -
34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'	34 E ho veduto e ho testimoniato esser egli il Figliuol di Dio».
35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,	35 Il giorno seguente Giovanni si trovava di nuovo là, con due suoi discepoli
36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'	36 e, fissato lo sguardo in Gesù che passava, disse: «Ecco l'Agnello di Dio!».
37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.	37 I due discepoli udirono queste parole e andaron dietro a Gesù.
38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'	38 Gesù si volse e, notato che lo seguivano, domandò loro: «Chi cercate?». Essi gli dissero: «Rabbi», (che tradotto vuol dire "Maestro"), «dove abiti?».
39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.	39 Egli rispose loro: «Venite e vedrete». Andarono e videro dove egli abitava; e rimasero con lui per quel giorno. Era circa l'ora decima.
40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.	40 Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, era un dei due che avevano udite le parole di Giovanni e aveva seguìto Gesù.
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-	41 Imbattutosi pertanto con suo fratello, Simone, gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato il Messia» (che tradotto vuol dire "il Cristo"), e lo portò da Gesù.
42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.	42 E Gesù, fissando bene in lui lo sguardo, disse: «Tu sei Simone, figliuolo di Giona: tu ti chiamerai Cefa» (che vuol dire "Pietro").
43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'	43 Il giorno seguente Gesù volle andare in Galilea e trovato Filippo, gli disse: «Seguimi».
44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.	44 Filippo era di Betsaida, patria di Andrea e di Pietro.
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'	45 Filippo essendosi incontrato con Natanaele gli narrò: «Abbiamo trovato colui di cui scrissero Mosè nella Legge, e i Profeti: "Gesù, figlio di Giuseppe, da Nazaret"».
46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'	46 Natanaele gli rispose: «Può mai venire qualcosa di buono da Nazaret?». Filippo gli disse: «Vieni e vedi».
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'	47 Gesù vide venirgli incontro Natanaele e, parlando di lui, disse: «Ecco un vero Israelita, nel quale non c'è malizia».
48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'	48 Natanaele gli chiese: «Come mai mi conosci?». Gesù rispose: «Prima che Filippo ti chiamasse, quando eri sotto il fico, io ti vidi».
49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'	49 Natanaele gli replicò: «Rabbi, tu sei il Figliuol di Dio! Tu sei il re d'Israele!».
50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'	50 Gesù rispondendo gli disse: «Perchè io ho detto che ti ho veduto sotto il fico, tu credi? Tu vedrai cose più grandi di queste!».
51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'	51 Poi soggiunse: «In verità, in verità vi dico che vedrete il cielo aperto e gli angeli di Dio salire e scendere sul Figliuol dell'uomo».
