1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.	1 In principio era il Verbo, e il Verbo era presso Dio e il Verbo era Dio.
2 He was with God in the beginning.	2 Egli era, in principio, presso Dio:
3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.	3 tutto è stato fatto per mezzo di lui e senza di lui nulla è stato fatto di ciò che esiste.
4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;	4 In lui era la vita e la vita era la luce degli uomini;
5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.	5 la luce splende nelle tenebre e le tenebre non l’hanno vinta.
6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.	6 Venne un uomo mandato da Dio: il suo nome era Giovanni.
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.	7 Egli venne come testimone per dare testimonianza alla luce, perché tutti credessero per mezzo di lui.
8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.	8 Non era lui la luce, ma doveva dare testimonianza alla luce.
9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.	9 Veniva nel mondo la luce vera, quella che illumina ogni uomo.
10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.	10 Era nel mondo e il mondo è stato fatto per mezzo di lui; eppure il mondo non lo ha riconosciuto.
11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.	11 Venne fra i suoi, e i suoi non lo hanno accolto.
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name	12 A quanti però lo hanno accolto ha dato potere di diventare figli di Dio: a quelli che credono nel suo nome,
13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.	13 i quali, non da sangue né da volere di carne né da volere di uomo, ma da Dio sono stati generati.
14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.	14 E il Verbo si fece carne e venne ad abitare in mezzo a noi; e noi abbiamo contemplato la sua gloria, gloria come del Figlio unigenito che viene dal Padre, pieno di grazia e di verità.
15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'	15 Giovanni gli dà testimonianza e proclama: «Era di lui che io dissi: Colui che viene dopo di me è avanti a me, perché era prima di me».
16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,	16 Dalla sua pienezza noi tutti abbiamo ricevuto: grazia su grazia.
17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.	17 Perché la Legge fu data per mezzo di Mosè, la grazia e la verità vennero per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.
18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.	18 Dio, nessuno lo ha mai visto: il Figlio unigenito, che è Dio ed è nel seno del Padre, è lui che lo ha rivelato.
19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'	19 Questa è la testimonianza di Giovanni, quando i Giudei gli inviarono da Gerusalemme sacerdoti e leviti a interrogarlo: «Tu, chi sei?».
20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'	20 Egli confessò e non negò. Confessò: «Io non sono il Cristo».
21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'	21 Allora gli chiesero: «Chi sei, dunque? Sei tu Elia?». «Non lo sono», disse. «Sei tu il profeta?». «No», rispose.
22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'	22 Gli dissero allora: «Chi sei? Perché possiamo dare una risposta a coloro che ci hanno mandato. Che cosa dici di te stesso?».
23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'	23 Rispose: «Io sono voce di uno che grida nel deserto: Rendete diritta la via del Signore, come disse il profeta Isaia».
24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,	24 Quelli che erano stati inviati venivano dai farisei.
25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'	25 Essi lo interrogarono e gli dissero: «Perché dunque tu battezzi, se non sei il Cristo, né Elia, né il profeta?».
26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-	26 Giovanni rispose loro: «Io battezzo nell’acqua. In mezzo a voi sta uno che voi non conoscete,
27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'	27 colui che viene dopo di me: a lui io non sono degno di slegare il laccio del sandalo».
28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.	28 Questo avvenne in Betània, al di là del Giordano, dove Giovanni stava battezzando.
29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.	29 Il giorno dopo, vedendo Gesù venire verso di lui, disse: «Ecco l’agnello di Dio, colui che toglie il peccato del mondo!
30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."	30 Egli è colui del quale ho detto: “Dopo di me viene un uomo che è avanti a me, perché era prima di me”.
31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'	31 Io non lo conoscevo, ma sono venuto a battezzare nell’acqua, perché egli fosse manifestato a Israele».
32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.	32 Giovanni testimoniò dicendo: «Ho contemplato lo Spirito discendere come una colomba dal cielo e rimanere su di lui.
33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."	33 Io non lo conoscevo, ma proprio colui che mi ha inviato a battezzare nell’acqua mi disse: “Colui sul quale vedrai discendere e rimanere lo Spirito, è lui che battezza nello Spirito Santo”.
34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'	34 E io ho visto e ho testimoniato che questi è il Figlio di Dio».
35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,	35 Il giorno dopo Giovanni stava ancora là con due dei suoi discepoli
36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'	36 e, fissando lo sguardo su Gesù che passava, disse: «Ecco l’agnello di Dio!».
37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.	37 E i suoi due discepoli, sentendolo parlare così, seguirono Gesù.
38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'	38 Gesù allora si voltò e, osservando che essi lo seguivano, disse loro: «Che cosa cercate?». Gli risposero: «Rabbì – che, tradotto, significa Maestro –, dove dimori?».
39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.	39 Disse loro: «Venite e vedrete». Andarono dunque e videro dove egli dimorava e quel giorno rimasero con lui; erano circa le quattro del pomeriggio.
40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.	40 Uno dei due che avevano udito le parole di Giovanni e lo avevano seguito, era Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro.
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-	41 Egli incontrò per primo suo fratello Simone e gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato il Messia» – che si traduce Cristo –
42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.	42 e lo condusse da Gesù. Fissando lo sguardo su di lui, Gesù disse: «Tu sei Simone, il figlio di Giovanni; sarai chiamato Cefa» – che significa Pietro.
43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'	43 Il giorno dopo Gesù volle partire per la Galilea; trovò Filippo e gli disse: «Seguimi!».
44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.	44 Filippo era di Betsàida, la città di Andrea e di Pietro.
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'	45 Filippo trovò Natanaele e gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato colui del quale hanno scritto Mosè, nella Legge, e i Profeti: Gesù, il figlio di Giuseppe, di Nàzaret».
46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'	46 Natanaele gli disse: «Da Nàzaret può venire qualcosa di buono?». Filippo gli rispose: «Vieni e vedi».
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'	47 Gesù intanto, visto Natanaele che gli veniva incontro, disse di lui: «Ecco davvero un Israelita in cui non c’è falsità».
48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'	48 Natanaele gli domandò: «Come mi conosci?». Gli rispose Gesù: «Prima che Filippo ti chiamasse, io ti ho visto quando eri sotto l’albero di fichi».
49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'	49 Gli replicò Natanaele: «Rabbì, tu sei il Figlio di Dio, tu sei il re d’Israele!».
50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'	50 Gli rispose Gesù: «Perché ti ho detto che ti avevo visto sotto l’albero di fichi, tu credi? Vedrai cose più grandi di queste!».
51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'	51 Poi gli disse: «In verità, in verità io vi dico: vedrete il cielo aperto e gli angeli di Dio salire e scendere sopra il Figlio dell’uomo».
