John 1

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.	1 Al principio existía la Palabra, y la Palabra estaba junto a Dios, y la Palabra era Dios.
2 He was with God in the beginning.	2 Al principio estaba junto a Dios.
3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.	3 Todas las cosas fueron hechas por medio de la Palabra y sin ella no se hizo nada de todo lo que existe.
4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;	4 En ella estaba la vida, y la vida era la luz de los hombres.
5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.	5 La luz brilla en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no la percibieron.
6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.	6 Apareció un hombre enviado por Dios, que se llamaba Juan.
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.	7 Vino como testigo, para dar testimonio de la luz, para que todos creyeran por medio de él.
8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.	8 El no era luz, sino el testigo de la luz.
9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.	9 La Palabra era la luz verdadera que, al venir a este mundo, ilumina a todo hombre.
10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.	10 Ella estaba en el mundo, y el mundo fue hecho por medio de ella, y el mundo no la conoció.
11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.	11 Vino a los suyos, y los suyos no la recibieron.
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name	12 Pero a todos los que la recibieron, a los que creen en su Nombre, les dio el poder de llegar a ser hijos de Dios.
13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.	13 Ellos no nacieron de la sangre, ni por obra de la carne, ni de la voluntad del hombre, sino que fueron engendrados por Dios.
14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.	14 Y la Palabra se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros. Y nosotros hemos visto su gloria, la gloria que recibe del Padre como Hijo único, lleno de gracia y de verdad.
15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'	15 Juan da testimonio de él, al declarar: «Este es aquel del que yo dije: El que viene después de mí me ha precedido, porque existía antes que yo».
16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,	16 De su plenitud, todos nosotros hemos participado y hemos recibido gracia sobre gracia:
17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.	17 porque la Ley fue dada por medio de Moisés, pero la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por Jesucristo.
18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.	18 Nadie ha visto jamás a Dios; el que lo ha revelado es el Hijo único, que está en el seno del Padre.
19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'	19 Este es el testimonio que dio Juan, cuando los judíos enviaron sacerdotes y levitas desde Jerusalén, para preguntarle: «¿Quién eres tú?».
20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'	20 El confesó y no lo ocultó, sino que dijo claramente: «Yo no soy el Mesías».
21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'	21 «¿Quién eres, entonces?», le preguntaron: «¿Eres Elías?». Juan dijo: «No». «¿Eres el Profeta?». «Tampoco», respondió.
22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'	22 Ellos insistieron: «¿Quién eres, para que podamos dar una respuesta a los que nos han enviado? ¿Qué dices de ti mismo?»
23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'	23 Y él les dijo: «Yo soy una voz que grita en el desierto: Allanen el camino del Señor, como dijo el profeta Isaías».
24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,	24 Algunos de los enviados eran fariseos,
25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'	25 y volvieron a preguntarle: «¿Por qué bautizas, entonces, si tú no eres el Mesías, ni Elías, ni el Profeta?».
26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-	26 Juan respondió: «Yo bautizo con agua, pero en medio de ustedes hay alguien al que ustedes no conocen:
27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'	27 él viene después de mí, y yo no soy digno de desatar la correa de su sandalia».
28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.	28 Todo esto sucedió en Betania, al otro lado del Jordán donde Juan bautizaba.
29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.	29 Al día siguiente, Juan vio acercarse a Jesús y dijo: «Este es el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo.
30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."	30 A él me refería, cuando dije: Después de mí viene un hombre que me precede, porque existía antes que yo.
31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'	31 Yo no lo conocía, pero he venido a bautizar con agua para que él fuera manifestado a Israel».
32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.	32 Y Juan dio este testimonio: «He visto al Espíritu descender del cielo en forma de paloma y permanecer sobre él.
33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."	33 Yo no lo conocía, pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua me dijo: "Aquel sobre el que veas descender el Espíritu y permanecer sobre él, ese es el que bautiza en el Espíritu Santo".
34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'	34 Yo lo he visto y doy testimonio de que él es el Hijo de Dios».
35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,	35 Al día siguiente, estaba Juan otra vez allí con dos de sus discípulos
36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'	36 y, mirando a Jesús que pasaba, dijo: «Este es el Cordero de Dios».
37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.	37 Los dos discípulos, al oírlo hablar así, siguieron a Jesús.
38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'	38 El se dio vuelta y, viendo que lo seguían, les preguntó: «¿Qué quieren?». Ellos le respondieron: «Rabbí –que traducido significa Maestro– ¿dónde vives?».
39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.	39 «Vengan y lo verán», les dijo. Fueron, vieron dónde vivía y se quedaron con él ese día. Era alrededor de las cuatro de la tarde.
40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.	40 Uno de los dos que oyeron las palabras de Juan y siguieron a Jesús era Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro.
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-	41 Al primero que encontró fue a su propio hermano Simón, y le dijo «Hemos encontrado al Mesías», que traducido significa Cristo.
42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.	42 Entonces lo llevó a donde estaba Jesús. Jesús lo miró y le dijo: «Tú eres Simón, el hijo de Juan: tú te llamarás Cefas», que traducido significa Pedro.
43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'	43 Al día siguiente, Jesús resolvió partir hacia Galilea. Encontró a Felipe y le dijo: «Sígueme».
44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.	44 Felipe era de Betsaida, la ciudad de Andrés y de Pedro.
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'	45 Felipe encontró a Natanael y le dijo: «Hemos hallado a aquel de quien se habla en la Ley de Moisés y en los Profetas. Es Jesús, el hijo de José de Nazaret».
46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'	46 Natanael le preguntó: «¿Acaso puede salir algo bueno de Nazaret?». «Ven y verás», le dijo Felipe.
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'	47 Al ver llegar a Natanael, Jesús dijo: «Este es un verdadero israelita, un hombre sin doblez».
48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'	48 «¿De dónde me conoces?», le preguntó Natanael. Jesús le respondió: «Yo te vi antes que Felipe te llamara, cuando estabas debajo de la higuera».
49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'	49 Natanael le respondió: «Maestro, tú eres el hijo de Dios, tú eres el Rey de Israel».
50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'	50 Jesús continuó: «Porque te dije: "Te vi debajo de la higuera", crees. Verás cosas más grandes todavía».
51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'	51 Y agregó: «Les aseguro que verán el cielo abierto, y a los ángeles de Dios subir y bajar sobre el Hijo del hombre».
