NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.2 He was in the beginning with God.
Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be
What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race;
and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
A man came, sent by God. His name was John.6 A man named John was sent from God.
He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.7 He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.
He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.8 He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.
The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him.
He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.11 He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.
But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name,
who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.13 who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God.
The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth.
John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'15 John testified to him and cried out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.'"
Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,16 From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace,
for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.17 because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father's side, has revealed him.
This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'19 And this is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites (to him) to ask him, "Who are you?"
He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'20 he admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, "I am not the Messiah."
So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'21 So they asked him, "What are you then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'22 So they said to him, "Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?"
So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'23 He said: "I am 'the voice of one crying out in the desert, "Make straight the way of the Lord,"' as Isaiah the prophet said."
Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,24 Some Pharisees were also sent.
and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'25 They asked him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?"
John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-26 John answered them, "I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,
is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'27 the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie."
This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.28 This happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."30 He is the one of whom I said, 'A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.'
I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'31 I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel."
And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.32 John testified further, saying, "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him.
I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."33 I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit.'
I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'34 Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God."
The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples,
and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God."
And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.37 The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'38 Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.39 He said to them,"Come, and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.
One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.
The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed).
and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.42 Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Kephas" (which is translated Peter).
The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'43 The next day he decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, "Follow me."
Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'46 But Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, "Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him."
Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'48 Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."
Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'49 Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'50 Jesus answered and said to him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this."
And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'51 And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
