NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.	1 In principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum.
2 He was with God in the beginning.	2 Hoc erat in principio apud Deum.
3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.	3 Omnia per ipsum facta sunt, et sine ipsofactum est nihil, quod factum est;
4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;	4 in ipso vita erat, et vita erat luxhominum,
5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.	5 et lux in tenebris lucet, et tenebrae eam non comprehenderunt.
6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.	6 Fuit homo missus a Deo, cui nomen erat Ioannes;
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.	7 hic venit in testimonium, uttestimonium perhiberet de lumine, ut omnes crederent per illum.
8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.	8 Non erat illelux, sed ut testimonium perhiberet de lumine.
9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.	9 Erat lux vera, quae illuminat omnem hominem, veniens in mundum.
10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.	10 In mundoerat, et mundus per ipsum factus est, et mundus eum non cognovit.
11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.	11 In propriavenit, et sui eum non receperunt.
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name	12 Quotquot autem acceperunt eum, dedit eis potestatem filios Dei fieri, his,qui credunt in nomine eius,
13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.	13 qui non ex sanguinibus neque ex voluntate carnisneque ex voluntate viri, sed ex Deo nati sunt.
14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.	14 Et Verbum caro factum est et habitavit in nobis; et vidimus gloriam eius,gloriam quasi Unigeniti a Patre, plenum gratiae et veritatis.
15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'	15 Ioannes testimonium perhibet de ipso et clamat dicens: “ Hic erat, quemdixi: Qui post me venturus est, ante me factus est, quia prior me erat ”.
16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,	16 Et de plenitudine eius nos omnes accepimus, et gratiam pro gratia;
17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.	17 quialex per Moysen data est, gratia et veritas per Iesum Christum facta est.
18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.	18 Deumnemo vidit umquam; unigenitus Deus, qui est in sinum Patris, ipse enarravit.
19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'	19 Et hoc est testimonium Ioannis, quando miserunt ad eum Iudaei ab Hierosolymissacerdotes et Levitas, ut interrogarent eum: “ Tu quis es? ”.
20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'	20 Etconfessus est et non negavit; et confessus est: “ Non sum ego Christus ”.
21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'	21 Et interrogaverunt eum: “ Quid ergo? Elias es tu? ”. Et dicit: “ Non sum”. “ Propheta es tu? ”. Et respondit: “ Non ”.
22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'	22 Dixerunt ergo ei:“ Quis es? Ut responsum demus his, qui miserunt nos. Quid dicis de teipso? ”.
23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'	23 Ait: “ Ego vox clamantis in deserto: “Dirigite viam Domini”, sicut dixit Isaias propheta ”.
24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,	24 Et qui missi fuerant, erant ex pharisaeis;
25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'	25 et interrogaverunt eum et dixerunt ei: “ Quid ergo baptizas, si tu non esChristus neque Elias neque propheta? ”.
26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-	26 Respondit eis Ioannes dicens: “Ego baptizo in aqua; medius vestrum stat, quem vos non scitis,
27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'	27 qui post meventurus est, cuius ego non sum dignus, ut solvam eius corrigiam calceamenti ”.
28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.	28 Haec in Bethania facta sunt trans Iordanem, ubi erat Ioannes baptizans.
29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.	29 Altera die videt Iesum venientem ad se et ait: “ Ecce agnus Dei, qui tollitpeccatum mundi.
30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."	30 Hic est, de quo dixi: Post me venit vir, qui ante me factusest, quia prior me erat.
31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'	31 Et ego nesciebam eum, sed ut manifestetur Israel,propterea veni ego in aqua baptizans ”.
32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.	32 Et testimonium perhibuit Ioannesdicens: “ Vidi Spiritum descendentem quasi columbam de caelo, et mansit supereum;
33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."	33 et ego nesciebam eum, sed, qui misit me baptizare in aqua, ille mihidixit: “Super quem videris Spiritum descendentem et manentem super eum, hicest qui baptizat in Spiritu Sancto”.
34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'	34 Et ego vidi et testimonium perhibuiquia hic est Filius Dei ”.
35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,	35 Altera die iterum stabat Ioannes et ex discipulis eius duo,
36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'	36 et respiciensIesum ambulantem dicit: “ Ecce agnus Dei ”.
37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.	37 Et audierunt eum duodiscipuli loquentem et secuti sunt Iesum.
38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'	38 Conversus autem Iesus et videns eossequentes se dicit eis: “ Quid quaeritis? ”. Qui dixerunt ei: “ Rabbi —quod dicitur interpretatum Magister — ubi manes? ”.
39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.	39 Dicit eis: “ Veniteet videbitis ”. Venerunt ergo et viderunt, ubi maneret, et apud eum manseruntdie illo; hora erat quasi decima.
40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.	40 Erat Andreas, frater Simonis Petri, unus ex duobus, qui audierant ab Ioanneet secuti fuerant eum.
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-	41 Invenit hic primum fratrem suum Simonem et dicit ei:“ Invenimus Messiam ” — quod est interpretatum Christus;
42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.	42 adduxit eumad Iesum. Intuitus eum Iesus dixit: “ Tu es Simon filius Ioannis; tu vocaberisCephas ” — quod interpretatur Petrus.
43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'	43 In crastinum voluit exire in Galilaeam et invenit Philippum. Et dicit eiIesus: “ Sequere me ”.
44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.	44 Erat autem Philippus a Bethsaida, civitate Andreaeet Petri.
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'	45 Invenit Philippus Nathanael et dicit ei: “ Quem scripsit Moysesin Lege et Prophetae invenimus, Iesum filium Ioseph a Nazareth ”.
46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'	46 Et dixitei Nathanael: “ A Nazareth potest aliquid boni esse? ”. Dicit ei Philippus:“ Veni et vide ”.
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'	47 Vidit Iesus Nathanael venientem ad se et dicit de eo:“ Ecce vere Israelita, in quo dolus non est ”.
48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'	48 Dicit ei Nathanael: “Unde me nosti? ”. Respondit Iesus et dixit ei: “ Priusquam te Philippusvocaret, cum esses sub ficu, vidi te ”.
49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'	49 Respondit ei Nathanael: “ Rabbi,tu es Filius Dei, tu rex es Israel! ”.
50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'	50 Respondit Iesus et dixit ei: “Quia dixi tibi: Vidi te sub ficu, credis? Maiora his videbis ”.
51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'	51 Et dicitei: “ Amen, amen dico vobis: Videbitis caelum apertum et angelos Deiascendentes et descendentes supra Filium hominis ”.
