NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Now it happened that one day while he was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming thegood news, the chief priests and the scribes came up, together with the elders,	1 Un giorno, mentre istruiva il popolo nel tempio e annunziava il suo messaggio, andarono da lui i capi dei sacerdoti, i dottori della legge, con i capi del popolo, e gli dissero:
2 and spoke to him. 'Tel us,' they said, 'what authority have you for acting like this? Or who gives youthis authority?'	2 "Dicci con quale autorità tu fai queste cose. Chi ti ha dato questo potere?".
3 In reply he said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one. Tel me:	3 Gesù rispose loro: "Io pure vi farò una domanda. Ditemi:
4 John's baptism: what was its origin, heavenly or human?'	4 il battesimo di Giovanni era dal cielo o dagli uomini?".
5 And they debated this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he will retort, "Why did you refuseto believe him?";	5 Essi allora fecero tra loro questo ragionamento: "Se diciamo "dal cielo", risponderà: "Perché non gli avete creduto?".
6 and if we say human, the whole people wil stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.'	6 Se invece diciamo "dagli uomini", allora il popolo ci lapiderà, perché tutti sono convinti che Giovanni era un profeta".
7 So their reply was that they did not know where it came from.	7 Perciò risposero di non saperlo.
8 And Jesus said to them, 'Nor wil I tell you my authority for acting like this.'	8 E Gesù disse loro: "Neppure io vi dirò con quale autorità faccio queste cose".
9 And he went on to tel the people this parable, 'A man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants, andwent abroad for a long while.	9 Poi cominciò a raccontare al popolo questa parabola: "Un uomo piantò una vigna, l'affidò a dei contadini e se ne andò lontano per molto tempo.
10 When the right time came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get his share of the produce of thevineyard. But the tenants thrashed him, and sent him away empty-handed.	10 Al momento opportuno, mandò un servo da quei contadini per ritirare la sua parte del raccolto della vigna. Ma i contadini lo bastonarono e lo mandarono via a mani vuote.
11 But he went on to send a second servant; they thrashed him too and treated him shamefully and senthim away empty-handed.	11 Il padrone mandò un altro servo, ma essi percossero anche questo, lo insultarono e lo rimandarono a mani vuote.
12 He still went on to send a third; they wounded this one too, and threw him out.	12 Ne mandò ancora un terzo, ma quei contadini percossero gravemente anche lui e lo cacciarono.
13 Then the owner of the vineyard thought, "What am I to do? I wil send them my own beloved son.Perhaps they wil respect him."	13 Allora il padrone della vigna disse: "Che cosa posso fare? Manderò il mio figlio, l'amato. Forse di lui avranno rispetto".
14 But when the tenants saw him they put their heads together saying, "This is the heir, let us kil him sothat the inheritance wil be ours."	14 Ma i contadini, appena lo videro, dissero tra loro: "Costui è l'erede! Ammazziamolo, perché l'eredità sia nostra!".
15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 'Now what wil the owner of the vineyard do tothem?	15 E, gettatolo fuori dalla vigna, lo uccisero. Che cosa farà dunque il padrone della vigna a costoro?
16 He wil come and make an end of these tenants and give the vineyard to others.' Hearing this theysaid, 'God forbid!'	16 Verrà, disperderà quei contadini e darà la vigna ad altri". Ma essi, udite queste parole, dissero: "Non sia mai!".
17 But he looked hard at them and said, 'Then what does this text in the scriptures mean: The stonewhich the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?	17 Allora Gesù fissò lo sguardo su di loro e disse: "Che cos'è dunque ciò che sta scritto: La pietra che i costruttori hanno scartata è diventata pietra di base?
18 Anyone who fal s on that stone will be dashed to pieces; anyone it fal s on wil be crushed.'	18 Chiunque cadrà su quella pietra si sfracellerà; e colui sul quale essa cadrà, lo stritolerà".
19 And the scribes and the chief priests would have liked to lay hands on him that very moment,because they realised that this parable was aimed at them, but they were afraid of the people.	19 I dottori della legge e i capi dei sacerdoti cercarono di impadronirsi di lui in quello stesso momento, ma ebbero paura del popolo. Avevano ben capito che egli aveva detto per loro quella parabola.
20 So they awaited their opportunity and sent agents to pose as upright men, and to catch him out insomething he might say and so enable them to hand him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.	20 Si misero a osservarlo e mandarono delle spie, che dovevano fingersi persone oneste, per coglierlo in fallo in un suo discorso e poterlo consegnare al potere e all'autorità del governatore.
21 They put to him this question, 'Master, we know that you say and teach what is right; you favour noone, but teach the way of God in al honesty.	21 Essi lo interrogarono: "Maestro, sappiamo che parli ed insegni con rettitudine. Tu non guardi in faccia a nessuno, ma insegni veramente la via di Dio.
22 Is it permissible for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'	22 Ci è lecito o no pagare il tributo a Cesare?".
23 But he was aware of their cunning and said,	23 Rendendosi conto della loro malizia, disse:
24 'Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and title are on it?' They said, 'Caesar's.'	24 "Mostratemi un denaro: di chi è l'immagine e l'iscrizione?".
25 He said to them, 'Well then, pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- and God what belongs to God.'	25 Risposero: "Di Cesare". Ed egli disse: "Date a Cesare quel che è di Cesare e a Dio quel che è di Dio".
26 They were unable to catch him out in anything he had to say in public; they were amazed at hisanswer and were silenced.	26 Così non poterono coglierlo in fallo per quello che diceva al popolo e, meravigliatisi della sua risposta, non seppero più che cosa dire.
27 Some Sadducees -- those who argue that there is no resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,	27 Si avvicinarono alcuni sadducei, i quali dicono che non vi è risurrezione, e gli domandarono:
28 'Master, Moses prescribed for us, if a man's married brother dies childless, the man must marry thewidow to raise up children for his brother.	28 "Maestro, Mosè ci ha prescritto: se uno muore e lascia la moglie senza figli, suo fratello deve sposare la vedova e dare una discendenza al proprio fratello.
29 Wel then, there were seven brothers; the first, having married a wife, died childless.	29 C'erano dunque sette fratelli: il primo si sposò e morì senza lasciare figli.
30 The second	30 Allora la prese il secondo
31 and then the third married the widow. And the same with al seven, they died leaving no children.	31 e poi il terzo e così tutti e sette sposarono quella vedova: e tutti morirono senza lasciare figli.
32 Finally the woman herself died.	32 Poi morì anche la donna.
33 Now, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since she had been married to all seven?'	33 Questa donna, quando i morti risorgeranno, di chi sarà moglie? Poiché tutti e sette i fratelli l'hanno avuta come moglie".
34 Jesus replied, 'The children of this world take wives and husbands,	34 Gesù rispose loro: "I figli di questo mondo prendono moglie e prendono marito;
35 but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the deaddo not marry	35 ma quelli che sono giudicati degni del mondo futuro e della risurrezione dai morti, non prendono né moglie né marito.
36 because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of theresurrection they are children of God.	36 Essi non possono più morire, perché sono uguali agli angeli, e sono figli di Dio fatti degni della risurrezione.
37 And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he cal s theLord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.	37 E che i morti risorgono, lo ha affermato anche Mosè a proposito del roveto, quando dice che il Signore è Dio di Abramo, Dio di Isacco e Dio di Giacobbe.
38 Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him everyone is alive.'	38 Quindi Dio non è il Dio dei morti, ma dei viventi, perché tutti vivono per lui".
39 Some scribes then spoke up. They said, 'Wel put, Master.'	39 Intervennero allora alcuni dottori della legge e dissero: "Maestro, hai parlato bene".
40 They did not dare to ask him any more questions.	40 Da quel momento non avevano più il coraggio di fargli domande.
41 He then said to them, 'How can people maintain that the Christ is son of David?	41 Un giorno egli disse loro: "Come mai si dice che il Messia è figlio di Davide?
42 Why, David himself says in the Book of Psalms: The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at myright hand,	42 Nel libro dei Salmi lo stesso Davide dice: Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: Siedi alla mia destra,
43 til I have made your enemies your footstool.	43 finché io ponga i tuoi nemici come sgabello sotto i tuoi piedi.
44 David here cal s him Lord; how then can he be his son?'	44 Davide dunque lo chiama Signore. Perciò, come può essere suo figlio?".
45 While al the people were listening he said to the disciples,	45 Mentre tutto il popolo stava ad ascoltare, disse ai suoi discepoli:
46 'Beware of the scribes who like to walk about in long robes and love to be greeted respectfully in themarket squares, to take the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets,	46 "Guardatevi dai dottori della legge. Essi amano passeggiare in lunghe vesti, desiderano essere salutati nelle piazze e occupare i posti d'onore nelle sinagoghe e i primi posti nei banchetti.
47 who devour the property of widows, and for show offer long prayers. The more severe will be thesentence they receive.'	47 Fanno lunghe preghiere per farsi vedere, ma nello stesso tempo strappano alle vedove quello che ancora possiedono. Costoro saranno giudicati ben più severamente".
