1 Now it happened that one day while he was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming thegood news, the chief priests and the scribes came up, together with the elders,	1 - In uno di quei giorni, mentre insegnava al popolo nel tempio e annunziava la buona novella,
2 and spoke to him. 'Tel us,' they said, 'what authority have you for acting like this? Or who gives youthis authority?'	2 Sopraggiunsero i principi dei Sacerdoti e gli Scribi con gli anziani e gli chiesero: «Dicci con quale autorità fai tu queste cose, oppure chi ti ha dato questa autorità?».
3 In reply he said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one. Tel me:	3 Ed egli rispose loro: «Anch'io vi farò una domanda. Rispondetemi:
4 John's baptism: what was its origin, heavenly or human?'	4 - Il battesimo di Giovanni veniva dal cielo o dagli uomini? -».
5 And they debated this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he will retort, "Why did you refuseto believe him?";	5 Ed essi facevan tra loro queste considerazioni: «Se diciamo che veniva dal cielo, ci dirà: - Perchè dunque non gli avete creduto? -,
6 and if we say human, the whole people wil stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.'	6 e se diciamo che veniva dagli uomini, tutto il popolo ci lapiderà, persuaso com'è che Giovanni fosse un profeta».
7 So their reply was that they did not know where it came from.	7 Perciò risposero che non sapevano donde venisse.
8 And Jesus said to them, 'Nor wil I tell you my authority for acting like this.'	8 E Gesù replicò loro: «Neppure io vi dico con quale autorità faccio queste cose».
9 And he went on to tel the people this parable, 'A man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants, andwent abroad for a long while.	9 Poi cominciò a raccontare al popolo questa parabola: «Un uomo piantò una vigna e datala in affitto a dei coloni, se n'andò per un lungo viaggio.
10 When the right time came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get his share of the produce of thevineyard. But the tenants thrashed him, and sent him away empty-handed.	10 A suo tempo, mandò ai coloni un servo, perchè gli dessero conto dei prodotti della vigna; ma i coloni lo picchiarono e lo rimandarono a mani vuote.
11 But he went on to send a second servant; they thrashed him too and treated him shamefully and senthim away empty-handed.	11 Mandò ancora un altro servo; ma essi, picchiato e vituperato anche costui, lo rimandarono a mani vuote.
12 He still went on to send a third; they wounded this one too, and threw him out.	12 Egli allora ne mandò un terzo; ed essi, ferito anche lui, lo scannarono.
13 Then the owner of the vineyard thought, "What am I to do? I wil send them my own beloved son.Perhaps they wil respect him."	13 Allora disse il padrone della vigna: - Che farò? Manderò il mio figliuolo diletto; forse, quando lo vedranno, avranno rispetto per lui. -
14 But when the tenants saw him they put their heads together saying, "This is the heir, let us kil him sothat the inheritance wil be ours."	14 Ma i coloni, vistolo appena, complottaron tra loro e dissero: - Costui è l'erede; uccidiamolo e l'eredità sarà nostra. -
15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 'Now what wil the owner of the vineyard do tothem?	15 E, cacciatolo fuor della vigna, lo uccisero. Ora che farà di costoro il padrone della vigna?
16 He wil come and make an end of these tenants and give the vineyard to others.' Hearing this theysaid, 'God forbid!'	16 Verrà, sterminerà quei coloni e darà ad altri la vigna». Ma essi avendo udito ciò, dissero: «Non sia mai».
17 But he looked hard at them and said, 'Then what does this text in the scriptures mean: The stonewhich the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?	17 Egli però, fissatili, disse: «Che vuol dire dunque quanto sta scritto: La pietra rigettata dai costruttori è divenuta pietra angolare ?
18 Anyone who fal s on that stone will be dashed to pieces; anyone it fal s on wil be crushed.'	18 Chiunque cadrà su quella pietra sarà sfracellato, ed essa stritolerà colui sul quale cade».
19 And the scribes and the chief priests would have liked to lay hands on him that very moment,because they realised that this parable was aimed at them, but they were afraid of the people.	19 Gli Scribi e i principi dei Sacerdoti cercarono di mettergli immediatamente le mani addosso, ma ebbero paura del popolo, perchè capiron che questa parabola l'aveva raccontata per loro.
20 So they awaited their opportunity and sent agents to pose as upright men, and to catch him out insomething he might say and so enable them to hand him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.	20 Essi spiandolo gli mandarono insidiatori, i quali si fingessero giusti per sorprenderlo in fallo nella sua conversazione, e poterlo così dare in mano delle autorità e in balìa del preside.
21 They put to him this question, 'Master, we know that you say and teach what is right; you favour noone, but teach the way of God in al honesty.	21 Costoro lo interrogarono: «Maestro, sappiamo che tu parli e insegni rettamente, e non guardi in viso a nessuno, ma insegni la via di Dio con verità.
22 Is it permissible for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'	22 È lecito a noi pagare il tributo a Cesare, o no?».
23 But he was aware of their cunning and said,	23 Egli, conoscendo la loro astuzia, rispose loro: «Perchè mi tentate?
24 'Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and title are on it?' They said, 'Caesar's.'	24 Mostratemi un danaro. Di chi è l'immagine e l'iscrizione?». Gli risposero: «Di Cesare».
25 He said to them, 'Well then, pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- and God what belongs to God.'	25 «Rendete dunque», soggiunse loro «a Cesare quel che è di Cesare e a Dio quel che è di Dio».
26 They were unable to catch him out in anything he had to say in public; they were amazed at hisanswer and were silenced.	26 E così in nessuna parola potevano trovare un pretesto, davanti al popolo, e ammirati della sua risposta, stettero zitti.
27 Some Sadducees -- those who argue that there is no resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,	27 Alcuni Sadducei, i quali negano che vi sia la resurrezione, s'accostarono a lui e lo interrogarono
28 'Master, Moses prescribed for us, if a man's married brother dies childless, the man must marry thewidow to raise up children for his brother.	28 così: «Maestro, Mosè ha lasciato scritto: Se un uomo, avendo moglie, muore senza lasciare figli, suo fratello ne sposi la vedova e susciti prole al fratello .
29 Wel then, there were seven brothers; the first, having married a wife, died childless.	29 Ora c'erano sette fratelli; il primo prese moglie e morì senza figliuoli.
30 The second	30 Il secondo ne sposò la vedova ed egli pure morì senza figliuoli.
31 and then the third married the widow. And the same with al seven, they died leaving no children.	31 Il terzo la sposò e lo stesso fecero tutt'e sette, che morirono senza lasciar figliuoli.
32 Finally the woman herself died.	32 Ultima di tutti, morì anche la donna.
33 Now, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since she had been married to all seven?'	33 Di chi dunque, nella resurrezione, sarà moglie, mentre lo è stata di tutt'e sette?».
34 Jesus replied, 'The children of this world take wives and husbands,	34 Gesù rispose loro: «I figli di questo mondo si sposano e si maritano;
35 but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the deaddo not marry	35 ma coloro che saranno ritenuti degni del mondo futuro e della resurrezione dei morti, non si ammoglieranno e non si mariteranno;
36 because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of theresurrection they are children of God.	36 perchè non potranno più morire; sono come gli angeli e son figliuoli di Dio, essendo figliuoli della resurrezione.
37 And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he cal s theLord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.	37 Che poi i morti abbiano a risorgere lo dichiarò anche Mosè nel passo del Roveto , quando chiama il Signore il Dio d'Abramo, il Dio di Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe.
38 Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him everyone is alive.'	38 Ora Egli non è un Dio di morti, ma di viventi; poichè, per lui, tutti son vivi».
39 Some scribes then spoke up. They said, 'Wel put, Master.'	39 Alcuni degli Scribi soggiunsero: «Maestro, hai detto bene».
40 They did not dare to ask him any more questions.	40 E non osarono più fargli domanda.
41 He then said to them, 'How can people maintain that the Christ is son of David?	41 Egli domandò loro: «Come mai si dice che il Cristo sia figlio di David?
42 Why, David himself says in the Book of Psalms: The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at myright hand,	42 Mentre David stesso nel libro dei Salmi dice: Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: - Siedi alla mia destra,
43 til I have made your enemies your footstool.	43 finchè io abbia posto i tuoi nemici come sgabelli ai tuoi piedi -?
44 David here cal s him Lord; how then can he be his son?'	44 Dunque David lo chiama Signore; come mai allora può essere suo figliuolo?».
45 While al the people were listening he said to the disciples,	45 E mentre tutto il popolo lo stava ascoltando, egli disse a' suoi discepoli:
46 'Beware of the scribes who like to walk about in long robes and love to be greeted respectfully in themarket squares, to take the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets,	46 «Guardatevi dagli Scribi, i quali passeggiano volentieri in lunghe vesti, e amano le riverenze nelle piazze e i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe e i primi posti nei conviti;
47 who devour the property of widows, and for show offer long prayers. The more severe will be thesentence they receive.'	47 essi che divorano le case delle vedove e pregano a lungo per farsi vedere. A costoro toccherà una condanna più rigorosa».
