¹ on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of Yahweh was addressed through the prophetHaggai, as follows,	¹ בַּשְּׁבִיעִי בְּעֶשְׂרִים וְאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הָיָה דְּבַר־יְהוָה בְּיַד־חַגַּי הַנָּבִיא לֵאמֹר
² 'You are to speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jehozadak thehigh priest and to the remnant of the people. Say this,	² אֱמָר־נָא אֶל־זְרֻבָּבֶל בֶּן־שַׁלְתִּיאֵל פַּחַת יְהוּדָה וְאֶל־יְהֹושֻׁעַ בֶּן־יְהֹוצָדָק הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדֹול וְאֶל־שְׁאֵרִית הָעָם לֵאמֹר
³ "Is there anyone left among you who saw this Temple in its former glory? And how does it look to younow? Does it not seem as though there is nothing there?	³ מִי בָכֶם הַנִּשְׁאָר אֲשֶׁר רָאָה אֶת־הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה בִּכְבֹודֹו הָרִאשֹׁון וּמָה אַתֶּם רֹאִים אֹתֹו עַתָּה הֲלֹוא כָמֹהוּ כְּאַיִן בְּעֵינֵיכֶם
⁴ But take courage now, Zerubbabel!-Yahweh declares. Courage, Joshua son of Jehozadak high priest!Courage, al you people of the country!-Yahweh declares. To work! I am with you -- Yahweh Sabaoth declares-	⁴ וְעַתָּה חֲזַק זְרֻבָּבֶל ׀ נְאֻם־יְהוָה וַחֲזַק יְהֹושֻׁעַ בֶּן־יְהֹוצָדָק הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדֹול וַחֲזַק כָּל־עַם הָאָרֶץ נְאֻם־יְהוָה וַעֲשׂוּ כִּי־אֲנִי אִתְּכֶם נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות
⁵ and my spirit is present among you. Do not be afraid!	⁵ אֶת־הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר־כָּרַתִּי אִתְּכֶם בְּצֵאתְכֶם מִמִּצְרַיִם וְרוּחִי עֹמֶדֶת בְּתֹוכְכֶם אַל־תִּירָאוּ׃ ס
⁶ For Yahweh Sabaoth says this: A little while now, and I shal shake the heavens and the earth, the seaand the dry land.	⁶ כִּי כֹה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות עֹוד אַחַת מְעַט הִיא וַאֲנִי מַרְעִישׁ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת־הָאָרֶץ וְאֶת־הַיָּם וְאֶת־הֶחָרָבָה
⁷ I shal shake al the nations, and the treasures of al the nations will flow in, and I shal fil this Templewith glory, says Yahweh Sabaoth.	⁷ וְהִרְעַשְׁתִּי אֶת־כָּל־הַגֹּויִם וּבָאוּ חֶמְדַּת כָּל־הַגֹּויִם וּמִלֵּאתִי אֶת־הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה כָּבֹוד אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות
⁸ Mine is the silver, mine the gold!-Yahweh Sabaoth declares.	⁸ לִי הַכֶּסֶף וְלִי הַזָּהָב נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות
⁹ The glory of this new Temple wil surpass that of the old, says Yahweh Sabaoth, and in this place I shalgive peace -- Yahweh Sabaoth declares." '	⁹ גָּדֹול יִהְיֶה כְּבֹוד הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה הָאַחֲרֹון מִן־הָרִאשֹׁון אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות וּבַמָּקֹום הַזֶּה אֶתֵּן שָׁלֹום נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות׃ פ
¹⁰ On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh wasaddressed to the prophet Haggai as fol ows,	¹⁰ בְּעֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבָּעָה לַתְּשִׁיעִי בִּשְׁנַת שְׁתַּיִם לְדָרְיָוֶשׁ הָיָה דְּבַר־יְהוָה אֶל־חַגַּי הַנָּבִיא לֵאמֹר
¹¹ 'Yahweh Sabaoth says this, "Ask the priests to give a ruling on this:	¹¹ כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות שְׁאַל־נָא אֶת־הַכֹּהֲנִים תֹּורָה לֵאמֹר
¹² If someone is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his gown and al ows the fold to touch bread,broth, wine, oil or food of any kind, wil that become holy?" ' The priests replied, 'No.'	¹² הֵן ׀ יִשָּׂא־אִישׁ בְּשַׂר־קֹדֶשׁ בִּכְנַף בִּגְדֹו וְנָגַע בִּכְנָפֹו אֶל־הַלֶּחֶם וְאֶל־הַנָּזִיד וְאֶל־הַיַּיִן וְאֶל־שֶׁמֶן וְאֶל־כָּל־מַאֲכָל הֲיִקְדָּשׁ וַיַּעֲנוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹא
¹³ Haggai then said, 'If anyone rendered unclean by contact with a corpse touches any of these things,wil that become unclean?' The priests replied, 'It wil become unclean.'	¹³ וַיֹּאמֶר חַגַּי אִם־יִגַּע טְמֵא־נֶפֶשׁ בְּכָל־אֵלֶּה הֲיִטְמָא וַיַּעֲנוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים וַיֹּאמְרוּ יִטְמָא
¹⁴ Haggai then spoke out. 'It is the same with this people,' he said, 'the same with this nation, in my view-- Yahweh declares -- the same with everything they turn their hands to; and whatever they offer here is unclean.	¹⁴ וַיַּעַן חַגַּי וַיֹּאמֶר כֵּן הָעָם־הַזֶּה וְכֵן־הַגֹּוי הַזֶּה לְפָנַי נְאֻם־יְהוָה וְכֵן כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵיהֶם וַאֲשֶׁר יַקְרִיבוּ שָׁם טָמֵא הוּא
¹⁵ 'So now think carefully, today and henceforth: before one stone had been laid on another in thesanctuary of Yahweh,	¹⁵ וְעַתָּה שִׂימוּ־נָא לְבַבְכֶם מִן־הַיֹּום הַזֶּה וָמָעְלָה מִטֶּרֶם שׂוּם־אֶבֶן אֶל־אֶבֶן בְּהֵיכַל יְהוָה
¹⁶ what state were you in? You would come to a twenty-measure heap and find only ten; you wouldcome to a vat to draw fifty measures and find only twenty.	¹⁶ מִהְיֹותָם בָּא אֶל־עֲרֵמַת עֶשְׂרִים וְהָיְתָה עֲשָׂרָה בָּא אֶל־הַיֶּקֶב לַחְשֹׂף חֲמִשִּׁים פּוּרָה וְהָיְתָה עֶשְׂרִים
¹⁷ Everything you turned your hands to, I struck with wind-blast, mildew and hail, and stil you would notreturn to me -- Yahweh declares.	¹⁷ הִכֵּיתִי אֶתְכֶם בַּשִּׁדָּפֹון וּבַיֵּרָקֹון וּבַבָּרָד אֵת כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵיכֶם וְאֵין־אֶתְכֶם אֵלַי נְאֻם־יְהוָה
¹⁸ So think careful y, today and henceforth (from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the daythe foundation of the sanctuary of Yahweh was laid, think careful y)	¹⁸ שִׂימוּ־נָא לְבַבְכֶם מִן־הַיֹּום הַזֶּה וָמָעְלָה מִיֹּום עֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבָּעָה לַתְּשִׁיעִי לְמִן־הַיֹּום אֲשֶׁר־יֻסַּד הֵיכַל־יְהוָה שִׂימוּ לְבַבְכֶם
¹⁹ if seed-corn is stil short in the barn, and if vine and fig tree, pomegranate and olive tree still bear nofruit. 'From today onwards I intend to bless you.'	¹⁹ הַעֹוד הַזֶּרַע בַּמְּגוּרָה וְעַד־הַגֶּפֶן וְהַתְּאֵנָה וְהָרִמֹּון וְעֵץ הַזַּיִת לֹא נָשָׂא מִן־הַיֹּום הַזֶּה אֲבָרֵךְ׃ ס
²⁰ On the twenty-fourth day of the month the word of Yahweh was addressed a second time to Haggai,as fol ows,	²⁰ וַיְהִי דְבַר־יְהוָה ׀ שֵׁנִית אֶל־חַגַּי בְּעֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבָּעָה לַחֹדֶשׁ לֵאמֹר
²¹ 'Speak to Zerubbabel governor of Judah. Say this, "I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.	²¹ אֱמֹר אֶל־זְרֻבָּבֶל פַּחַת־יְהוּדָה לֵאמֹר אֲנִי מַרְעִישׁ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת־הָאָרֶץ
²² I shal overturn the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kings of the nations. I shalloverthrow the chariots and their crews; horses and their riders wil fall, every one to the sword of his comrade.	²² וְהָפַכְתִּי כִּסֵּא מַמְלָכֹות וְהִשְׁמַדְתִּי חֹזֶק מַמְלְכֹות הַגֹּויִם וְהָפַכְתִּי מֶרְכָּבָה וְרֹכְבֶיהָ וְיָרְדוּ סוּסִים וְרֹכְבֵיהֶם אִישׁ בְּחֶרֶב אָחִיו
²³ When that day comes -- Yahweh Sabaoth declares -- I shal take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel myservant -- Yahweh declares -- and make you like a signet ring. For I have chosen you -- Yahweh Sabaothdeclares." '	²³ בַּיֹּום הַהוּא נְאֻם־יְהוָה צְבָאֹות אֶקָּחֲךָ זְרֻבָּבֶל בֶּן־שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל עַבְדִּי נְאֻם־יְהוָה וְשַׂמְתִּיךָ כַּחֹותָם כִּי־בְךָ בָחַרְתִּי נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות
