NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Yahweh, remember what has happened to us; consider, and see our degradation.1 Remember, O Lord, what is come upon us: consider and behold our reproach.
Our heritage has passed to strangers, our homes to foreigners.2 Our inheritance is turned to aliens: our houses to strangers.
We are orphans, we are fatherless; our mothers are like widows.3 We are become orphans without a father: our mothers are as widows.
We have to buy our own water to drink, our own wood we can get only at a price.4 We have drunk our water for money: we have bought our wood.
The yoke is on our necks; we are persecuted; exhausted we are, al owed no rest.5 We were dragged by the necks, we were weary and no rest was given us.
We made a pact with Egypt, with Assyria, to have plenty of food.6 We have given our hand to Egypt, and to the Assyrians, that we might be satisfied with bread.
Our ancestors sinned; they are no more, and we bear the weight of their guilt.7 Our fathers have sinned, and are not: and we have borne their iniquities.
Slaves rule us; there is no one to rescue us from their clutches.8 Servants have ruled over us: there was none to redeem us out of their hand.
At peril of our lives we earn our bread, by risking the sword of the desert.9 We fetched our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the desert.
Our skin is as hot as an oven, from the scorch of famine.10 Our skin was burnt as an oven, by reason of the violence of the famine.
The women in Zion have been raped, the young girls in the towns of Judah.11 They oppressed the women in Sion, and the virgins in the cities of Juda.
Princes have been hanged by their hands; the face of the old has won no respect.12 The princes were hanged up by their hand: they did not respect the persons of the ancient.
Youths have been put to the mil , boys stagger under loads of wood.13 They abused the young men indecently: and the children fell under the wood.
The elders have deserted the gateway; the young have given up their music.14 The ancients have ceased from the gates: the young men from the choir of the singers.
Joy has vanished from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.15 The joy of our heart is ceased, our dancing is turned into mourning.
The crown has fallen from our heads. Alas that ever we sinned!16 The crown is fallen from our head woe to us, because we have sinned.
This is why our hearts are sick; this is why our eyes are dim:17 Therefore is our heart sorrowful, therefore are our eyes become dim,
because Mount Zion is desolate; jackals roam to and fro on it.18 For mount Sion, because it is destroyed, foxes have walked upon it.
Yet you, Yahweh, rule from eternity; your throne endures from age to age.19 But thou, O Lord, shalt remain for ever, thy throne from generation to generation.
Why do you never remember us? Why do you abandon us so long?20 Why wilt thou forget us for ever? why wilt thou forsake us for a long time?
Make us come back to you, Yahweh, and we will come back. Restore us as we were before!21 Convert us, O Lord, to thee, and we shall be converted: renew our days, as from the beginning.
Unless you have utterly rejected us, in an anger which knows no limit.22 But thou hast utterly rejected us, thou art exceedingly angry against us.
