NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Wisdom builds herself a house; with her own hands Folly pul s it down.1 A wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish will pull down with her hands that also which is built.
Whoever keeps to an honest course fears Yahweh, whoever deserts his paths shows contempt forhim.2 He that walketh in the right way, and feareth God, Cis despised by him that goeth by an infamous way.
Pride sprouts in the mouth of the fool, the lips of the wise keep them safe.3 In the mouth of a fool is the rod of pride: but the lips of the wise preserve them.
No oxen, empty manger; strong bul , much cash.4 Where there are no oxen, the crib is empty: but where there is much corn, there the strength of the ox is manifest.
The truthful witness tells no lies, the false witness lies with every breath.5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a deceitful witness uttereth a lie.
In vain the mocker looks for wisdom, knowledge comes easy to the intel igent.6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: the learning of the wise is easy.
Keep wel clear of the fool, you wil not find wise lips there.7 Go against a foolish man, and he knoweth not the lips of prudence.
With people of discretion, wisdom keeps a watch over their conduct, but the fol y of fools leads themastray.8 The wisdom of a. discreet man is to understand his way: and the imprudence of fools erreth.
Fools mock at the sacrifice for sin, but favour resides among the honest.9 A fool will laugh at sin, but among the just grace shall abide.
The heart knows its own grief best, nor can a stranger share its joy.10 The heart that knoweth the bitterness of his own soul, in his joy the stranger shall not intermeddle.
The house of the wicked wil be destroyed, the tent of the honest wil prosper.11 The house of the wicked shall be destroyed: but the tabernacles of the just shall flourish.
There are ways that some think straight, but they lead in the end to death.12 There is a way which seemeth just to a man: but the ends thereof lead to death.
Even in laughter the heart finds sadness, and joy makes way for sorrow.13 Laughter shall be mingled with sorrow, and mourning taketh hold of the end of joy.
The miscreant wil reap the reward of his conduct, and the good the reward of his deeds.14 A fool shall be filled with his own ways, and the good man shall be above him.
The simpleton believes any message, a person of discretion treads a careful path.15 The innocent believeth every word: the discreet man considereth his steps. No good shall come to the deceitful son: but the wise servant shall prosper in his dealings, and his way shall be made straight.
The wise fears evil and avoids it, the fool is insolent and conceited.16 A wise man feareth and declineth from evil: the fool leapeth over and is confident.
A quick-tempered person commits rash acts, but a schemer is detestable.17 The impatient man shall work folly: and the crafty man is hateful.
Simpletons have folly for their portion, people of discretion knowledge for their crown.18 The childish shall possess folly, and the prudent, shall look for knowledge.
The evil bow down before the good, the wicked, at the gates of the upright.19 The evil shall fall down before the good: and the wicked before the gates of the just.
The poor is detestable even to a friend, but many are they who love someone rich.20 The poor man shall be hateful even to his own neighbour: but the friends of the rich are many.
One who despises the needy is at fault, one who takes pity on the poor is blessed.21 He that despiseth his neighbour, sinneth: but he that sheweth mercy to the poor, shall be blessed. He that believeth in the Lord, loveth mercy.
Plan evil -- isn't this to go astray? Those who plan for good can earn faithful love and constancy.22 They err that work evil: but mercy and truth prepare good things.
Hard work always yields its profit, idle talk brings only want.23 In much work there shall be abundance: but where there are many words, there is oftentimes want.
The crown of the wise is their riches; the fol y of fools is folly.24 The crown of the wise is their riches: the folly of fools, imprudence.
A truthful witness saves lives, whoever utters lies is a deceiver.25 A faithful witness delivereth souls: and the double dealer uttereth lies.
In the fear of Yahweh is powerful security; for his children he is a refuge.26 In the fear of the Lord is confidence of strength, and there shall be hope for his children.
The fear of Yahweh is a life-giving spring for eluding the snares of death.27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to decline from the ruin of death.
Large population, monarch's glory; dwindling population, ruler's ruin.28 In the multitude of people is the dignity of the king: and in the small number of people the dishonour of the prince.
Mastery of temper is high proof of intel igence, a quick temper makes fol y worse than ever.29 He that is patient, is governed with much wisdom: but he that is impatient, exalteth his folly.
The life of the body is a tranquil heart, but envy is a cancer in the bones.30 Soundness of heart is the life of the flesh: but envy is the rottenness of the bones.
To oppress the weak insults the Creator, kindness to the needy honours the Creator.31 He that oppresseth the poor, upbraideth his Maker: but he that hath pity on the poor, honoureth him.
For evil-doing, the wicked wil be flung headlong, but in integrity the upright wil find refuge.32 The wicked man shall be driven out in his wickedness: but the just hath hope in his death.
Wisdom resides in an understanding heart; she is not to be found in the hearts of fools.33 In the heart of the prudent resteth wisdom, and it shall instruct all the ignorant.
Uprightness makes a nation great, by sin whole races are disgraced.34 Justice exalteth a nation: but sin maketh nations miserable.
A king shows favour to a wise minister, but anger to one who shames him.35 A wise servant is acceptable to the king: he that is good for nothing shall feel his anger.
