[For the choirmaster . . . Jeduthun Of Asaph Psalm] I cry to God in distress, I cry to God and he hearsme.1 Unto the end, for Idithun, a psalm of Asaph.
In the day of my distress I sought the Lord; al night I tirelessly stretched out my hands, my heartrefused to be consoled.2 I cried to the Lord with my voice; to God with my voice, and he gave ear to me.
I sigh as I think of God, my spirit faints away as I ponder on him. Pause3 In the day of my trouble I sought God, with my hands lifted up to him in the night, and I was not deceived. My soul refused to be comforted:
You kept me from closing my eyes, I was too distraught to speak;4 I remembered God, and was delighted, and was exercised, and my spirit swooned away.
I thought of former times, years long past5 My eyes prevented the watches: I was troubled, and I spoke not.
I recalled; through the night I ponder in my heart, as I reflect, my spirit asks this question:6 I thought upon the days of old: and I had in my mind the eternal years.
Is the Lord's rejection final? Will he never show favour again?7 And I meditated in the night with my own heart: and I was exercised and I swept my spirit.
Is his faithful love gone for ever? Has his Word come to an end for al time?8 Will God then cast off for ever? or will he never be more favourable again?
Does God forget to show mercy? In anger does he shut off his tenderness?Pause9 Or will he cut off his mercy for ever, from generation to generation?
And I said, 'This is what wounds me, the right hand of the Most High has lost its strength.'10 Or will God forget to shew mercy? or will he in his anger shut up his mercies?
Remembering Yahweh's great deeds, remembering your wonders in the past,11 And I said, Now have I begun: this is the change of the right hand of the most High.
I reflect on al that you did, I ponder all your great deeds.12 I remembered the works of the Lord: for I will be mindful of thy wonders from the beginning.
God, your ways are holy! What god is as great as our God?13 And I will meditate on all thy works: and will be employed in thy inventions.
You are the God who does marvel ous deeds, brought nations to acknowledge your power,14 Thy way, O God, is in the holy place: who is the great God like our God?
with your own arm redeeming your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph.Pause15 Thou art the God that dost wonders. Thou hast made thy power known among the nations:
When the waters saw you, God, when the waters saw you they writhed in anguish, the very depthsshook with fear.16 with thy arm thou hast redeemed thy people the children of Jacob and of Joseph.
The clouds pelted down water, the sky thundered, your arrows shot back and forth.17 The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee: and they were afraid, and the depths were troubled.
The rol ing of your thunder was heard, your lightning-flashes lit up the world, the earth shuddered andshook.18 Great was the noise of the waters: the clouds sent out a sound. For thy arrows pass:
Your way led over the sea, your path over the countless waters, and none could trace your footsteps.19 the voice of thy thunder in a wheel. Thy lightnings enlightened the world: the earth shook and trembled.
You guided your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.20 Thy way is in the sea, and thy paths in many waters: and thy footsteps shall not be known.
Thou hast conducted thy people like sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron
