1 Job spoke next. He said:	1 Giobbe rispose, dicendo:
2 Indeed, I know it is as you say: how could anyone claim to be upright before God?	2 « Lo so bene che l'è così, e anche che l'uomo, messo a confronto con Dio, non può aver ragione.
3 Anyone trying to argue matters with him, could not give him one answer in a thousand.	3 Se volesse contendere con lui, non potrebbe rispondergli una volta su mille.
4 Among the wisest and the hardiest, who then can successful y defy him?	4 Egli è saggio di cuore, è ricco di potenza, e chi ebbe pace dopo avergli resistito?
5 He moves the mountains, though they do not know it; he throws them down when he is angry.	5 Egli trasporta le montagne, nel suo furore le rovescia, senza che se ne avvedano;
6 He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place, making al its pil ars tremble.	6 Scuote la terra dal suo posto, e ne tremano le colonne.

9 He has made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South.	9 Ha creato l'Orsa, Orione, le Pleiadi e i recessi del cielo australe.
10 The works he does are great and unfathomable, and his marvels cannot be counted.	10 Fa cose grandi e in comprensibili, e maraviglie senza numero.
11 If he passes me, I do not see him; he slips by, imperceptible to me.	11 Se mi vien vicino, non lo vedo; se parte, non me ne accorgo.
12 If he snatches his prey, who is going to stop him or dare to ask, 'What are you doing?'	12 Se all'improvviso interroga, chi gli potrà rispondere? Chi può dirgli: Perchè fai così?
13 God does not renounce his anger: beneath him, Rahab's minions stil lie prostrate.	13 Dio! Nessuno può resistere alla sua ira; sotto di lui si curvano quelli che portano il mondo.
14 And here am I, proposing to defend myself and select my arguments against him!	14 E chi son io, da rispondergli? Con quali mie parole potrei discutere con lui?
15 Even if I am upright, what point is there in answering him? I can only plead for mercy with my judge!	15 Anche se avessi qualche ragione, non oserei replicare; ma implorerei la clemenza del mio giudice.
16 And if he deigned to answer my citation, I cannot believe he would listen to what I said,	16 Ed anche se esaudisse le mie suppliche, non crederei che Egli abbia avuto riguardo alla mia voce.

20 If I prove myself upright, his mouth may condemn me, even if I am innocent, he may pronounce meperverse.	20 Se vorrò giustificarmi, la mia stessa bocca mi condannerà; se dimostrerò d essere innocente, Egli mi proverebbe reo.
21 But am I innocent? I am no longer sure, and life itself I despise!	21 Anche se fossi giusto, non lo saprebbe l'anima mia, e mi sarà di tedio la vita.
22 It is al one, and hence I boldly say: he destroys innocent and guilty alike.	22 Questo solo io dico: Egli fa perire l'innocente e il reo.
23 When a sudden deadly scourge descends, he laughs at the plight of the innocent.	23 Or se Egli flagella, uccida subito, e non rida delle pene degli innocenti.
24 When a country falls into the power of the wicked, he veils the faces of its judges. Or if not he, whoelse?	24 La terra è in mano dell'empio. Egli mette una benda agli occhi dei suoi giudici. E chi è se non lui?
25 My days pass: more swiftly than a runner they flee away with never a glimpse of happiness,	25 I miei giorni passarono più veloci d'un corriere, son fuggiti senza vedere la felicità;
26 they skim past like a reed canoe, like an eagle swooping on its prey.	26 Son passati come navi che portan frutta, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.
27 If I decide to stifle my complaining, change countenance, and wear a smiling face,	27 Anche se dico: Non parlerò più così, si altera la mia faccia tra gli strazi del dolore,
28 fear seizes me at the thought of al my woes, for I know you do not regard me as innocent.	28 Torno a temere per ogni mia azione, sapendo che non la risparmi al peccatore.
29 And if I have done wrong, why should I put myself to useless trouble?	29 E se anche così son reo, a che affaticarmi invano?
30 If I wash myself in melted snow, clean my hands with soda,	30 Quand'anche mi lavassi con acqua di neve e splendessero per la gran mondezza le mie mani,
31 you wil only plunge me into the dung, til my clothes themselves recoil from me!	31 tu mi tingeresti di sozzura e le mie vesti m'avrebbero in orrore.
32 For he is not human like me: impossible for me to answer him or appear alongside him in court.	32 Infatti non avrò da rispondere a un uomo come me che possa con me e al par di me andar al giudizio:
33 There is no arbiter between us, to lay his hand on both,	33 non c'è chi possa riprendere l'uno e l'altro e metter la sua mano su tutti e due.
34 to stay his rod from me, or keep away his daunting terrors.	34 Ritiri Egli da me la sua verga, cessi di spaventarmi il suo terrore,
35 Nonetheless, unafraid of him, I shal speak: since I do not see myself like that at al !	35 e allora gli parlerò senza averne paura; ma col timore non posso rispondere ».
