NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Job spoke next. He said:	1 Giobbe prese la parola e disse:
2 Indeed, I know it is as you say: how could anyone claim to be upright before God?	2 "Certo, so che è così; come può un uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio?
3 Anyone trying to argue matters with him, could not give him one answer in a thousand.	3 Se uno volesse disputare con lui, non gli risponderebbe una volta su mille.
4 Among the wisest and the hardiest, who then can successful y defy him?	4 Chi, saggio di mente e potente per la forza, gli si è opposto ed è rimasto illeso?
5 He moves the mountains, though they do not know it; he throws them down when he is angry.	5 Egli sposta le montagne senza che se ne avvedano e le sconvolge nella sua collera.
6 He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place, making al its pil ars tremble.	6 Egli scuote la terra dal suo posto e le sue colonne vacillano.
7 The sun, at his command, forbears to rise, and on the stars he sets a seal.	7 Ordina al sole di non sorgere e mette un sigillo alle stelle.
8 He and no other has stretched out the heavens and trampled on the back of the Sea.	8 Egli da solo dispiega i cieli e cammina sulle onde del mare.
9 He has made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South.	9 Egli forma l'Orsa e l'Orione, le Pleiadi e le Costellazioni del sud.
10 The works he does are great and unfathomable, and his marvels cannot be counted.	10 Compie prodigi insondabili e meraviglie senza numero.
11 If he passes me, I do not see him; he slips by, imperceptible to me.	11 Ecco, mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, se ne va, e di lui non mi accorgo.
12 If he snatches his prey, who is going to stop him or dare to ask, 'What are you doing?'	12 Se rapisce qualcosa, chi lo può impedire? Chi può dirgli: "Che cosa fai?".
13 God does not renounce his anger: beneath him, Rahab's minions stil lie prostrate.	13 Dio non ritira la sua collera, sotto di lui si curvano le legioni di Raab.
14 And here am I, proposing to defend myself and select my arguments against him!	14 Tanto meno potrei io rispondergli o scegliere argomenti contro di lui.
15 Even if I am upright, what point is there in answering him? I can only plead for mercy with my judge!	15 Anche se avessi ragione non riceverei risposta, dovrei chiedere grazia al mio avversario.
16 And if he deigned to answer my citation, I cannot believe he would listen to what I said,	16 Anche se rispondesse al mio appello, non crederei che ha ascoltato la mia voce,
17 he who crushes me for one hair, who, for no reason, wounds and wounds again,	17 lui, che mi schiaccia nell'uragano e moltiplica senza ragione le mie ferite.

19 Shal I try force? Look how strong he is! Or go to court? But who wil summon him?	19 Se si tratta di forza, è lui il vigoroso; se si tratta di giudizio, chi lo farà comparire?
20 If I prove myself upright, his mouth may condemn me, even if I am innocent, he may pronounce meperverse.	20 Anche se fossi innocente, il mio parlare mi condannerebbe; se fossi giusto, mi dichiarerebbe perverso.
21 But am I innocent? I am no longer sure, and life itself I despise!	21 Sono innocente? Non lo so neppure io; detesto la mia vita.
22 It is al one, and hence I boldly say: he destroys innocent and guilty alike.	22 Però è lo stesso, ve lo assicuro, egli fa perire l'innocente e il reo!
23 When a sudden deadly scourge descends, he laughs at the plight of the innocent.	23 Se una calamità miete vittime in un istante, egli se ne ride della disgrazia degl'innocenti.
24 When a country falls into the power of the wicked, he veils the faces of its judges. Or if not he, whoelse?	24 Lascia la terra nel potere dei malvagi, egli vela il volto dei suoi governanti. Se non è lui, chi dunque può essere?
25 My days pass: more swiftly than a runner they flee away with never a glimpse of happiness,	25 I miei giorni passano più veloci di un corriere, fuggono senza gustare felicità.
26 they skim past like a reed canoe, like an eagle swooping on its prey.	26 Scorrono veloci come barche di giunco, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.
27 If I decide to stifle my complaining, change countenance, and wear a smiling face,	27 Se dico: "Voglio dimenticare la mia afflizione, cambiare il mio volto ed essere lieto",
28 fear seizes me at the thought of al my woes, for I know you do not regard me as innocent.	28 mi spavento per tutte le sofferenze; e poi so che tu non mi assolverai.
29 And if I have done wrong, why should I put myself to useless trouble?	29 Se sono colpevole, perché affaticarmi invano?
30 If I wash myself in melted snow, clean my hands with soda,	30 Anche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi le mie mani con la potassa,
31 you wil only plunge me into the dung, til my clothes themselves recoil from me!	31 tu mi tufferesti nel fango e le mie vesti mi avrebbero in orrore.
32 For he is not human like me: impossible for me to answer him or appear alongside him in court.	32 Egli, infatti, non è un uomo come me, cui possa replicare, e che insieme compariamo in giudizio.
33 There is no arbiter between us, to lay his hand on both,	33 Non c'è un giudice tra noi che ponga la mano su noi due,
34 to stay his rod from me, or keep away his daunting terrors.	34 che allontani da me la sua verga, in modo che il suo terrore non mi spaventi.
35 Nonetheless, unafraid of him, I shal speak: since I do not see myself like that at al !	35 Allora potrei parlare senza temerlo; poiché non è così, sono solo con me stesso.
