Job 9

NEW JERUSALEMLXX
Job spoke next. He said:1 υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει
Indeed, I know it is as you say: how could anyone claim to be upright before God?2 επ' αληθειας οιδα οτι ουτως εστιν πως γαρ εσται δικαιος βροτος παρα κυριω
Anyone trying to argue matters with him, could not give him one answer in a thousand.3 εαν γαρ βουληται κριθηναι αυτω ου μη υπακουση αυτω ινα μη αντειπη προς ενα λογον αυτου εκ χιλιων
Among the wisest and the hardiest, who then can successful y defy him?4 σοφος γαρ εστιν διανοια κραταιος τε και μεγας τις σκληρος γενομενος εναντιον αυτου υπεμεινεν
He moves the mountains, though they do not know it; he throws them down when he is angry.5 ο παλαιων ορη και ουκ οιδασιν ο καταστρεφων αυτα οργη
He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place, making al its pil ars tremble.6 ο σειων την υπ' ουρανον εκ θεμελιων οι δε στυλοι αυτης σαλευονται
The sun, at his command, forbears to rise, and on the stars he sets a seal.7 ο λεγων τω ηλιω και ουκ ανατελλει κατα δε αστρων κατασφραγιζει
He and no other has stretched out the heavens and trampled on the back of the Sea.8 ο τανυσας τον ουρανον μονος και περιπατων ως επ' εδαφους επι θαλασσης
He has made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South.9 ο ποιων πλειαδα και εσπερον και αρκτουρον και ταμιεια νοτου
The works he does are great and unfathomable, and his marvels cannot be counted.10 ο ποιων μεγαλα και ανεξιχνιαστα ενδοξα τε και εξαισια ων ουκ εστιν αριθμος
If he passes me, I do not see him; he slips by, imperceptible to me.11 εαν υπερβη με ου μη ιδω και εαν παρελθη με ουδ' ως εγνων
If he snatches his prey, who is going to stop him or dare to ask, 'What are you doing?'12 εαν απαλλαξη τις αποστρεψει η τις ερει αυτω τι εποιησας
God does not renounce his anger: beneath him, Rahab's minions stil lie prostrate.13 αυτος γαρ απεστραπται οργην υπ' αυτου εκαμφθησαν κητη τα υπ' ουρανον
And here am I, proposing to defend myself and select my arguments against him!14 εαν δε μου υπακουσηται η διακρινει τα ρηματα μου
Even if I am upright, what point is there in answering him? I can only plead for mercy with my judge!15 εαν τε γαρ ω δικαιος ουκ εισακουσεται μου του κριματος αυτου δεηθησομαι
And if he deigned to answer my citation, I cannot believe he would listen to what I said,16 εαν τε καλεσω και υπακουση ου πιστευω οτι εισακηκοεν μου
he who crushes me for one hair, who, for no reason, wounds and wounds again,17 μη γνοφω με εκτριψη πολλα δε μου τα συντριμματα πεποιηκεν δια κενης
not even letting me regain my breath, with so much bitterness he fills me!18 ουκ εα γαρ με αναπνευσαι ενεπλησεν δε με πικριας
Shal I try force? Look how strong he is! Or go to court? But who wil summon him?19 οτι μεν γαρ ισχυι κρατει τις ουν κριματι αυτου αντιστησεται
If I prove myself upright, his mouth may condemn me, even if I am innocent, he may pronounce meperverse.20 εαν γαρ ω δικαιος το στομα μου ασεβησει εαν τε ω αμεμπτος σκολιος αποβησομαι
But am I innocent? I am no longer sure, and life itself I despise!21 ειτε γαρ ησεβησα ουκ οιδα τη ψυχη πλην οτι αφαιρειται μου η ζωη
It is al one, and hence I boldly say: he destroys innocent and guilty alike.22 διο ειπον μεγαν και δυναστην απολλυει οργη
When a sudden deadly scourge descends, he laughs at the plight of the innocent.23 οτι φαυλοι εν θανατω εξαισιω αλλα δικαιοι καταγελωνται
When a country falls into the power of the wicked, he veils the faces of its judges. Or if not he, whoelse?24 παραδεδονται γαρ εις χειρας ασεβους προσωπα κριτων αυτης συγκαλυπτει ει δε μη αυτος τις εστιν
My days pass: more swiftly than a runner they flee away with never a glimpse of happiness,25 ο δε βιος μου εστιν ελαφροτερος δρομεως απεδρασαν και ουκ ειδοσαν
they skim past like a reed canoe, like an eagle swooping on its prey.26 η και εστιν ναυσιν ιχνος οδου η αετου πετομενου ζητουντος βοραν
If I decide to stifle my complaining, change countenance, and wear a smiling face,27 εαν τε γαρ ειπω επιλησομαι λαλων συγκυψας τω προσωπω στεναξω
fear seizes me at the thought of al my woes, for I know you do not regard me as innocent.28 σειομαι πασιν τοις μελεσιν οιδα γαρ οτι ουκ αθωον με εασεις
And if I have done wrong, why should I put myself to useless trouble?29 επειδη δε ειμι ασεβης δια τι ουκ απεθανον
If I wash myself in melted snow, clean my hands with soda,30 εαν γαρ απολουσωμαι χιονι και αποκαθαρωμαι χερσιν καθαραις
you wil only plunge me into the dung, til my clothes themselves recoil from me!31 ικανως εν ρυπω με εβαψας εβδελυξατο δε με η στολη
For he is not human like me: impossible for me to answer him or appear alongside him in court.32 ου γαρ ει ανθρωπος κατ' εμε ω αντικρινουμαι ινα ελθωμεν ομοθυμαδον εις κρισιν
There is no arbiter between us, to lay his hand on both,33 ειθε ην ο μεσιτης ημων και ελεγχων και διακουων ανα μεσον αμφοτερων
to stay his rod from me, or keep away his daunting terrors.34 απαλλαξατω απ' εμου την ραβδον ο δε φοβος αυτου μη με στροβειτω
Nonetheless, unafraid of him, I shal speak: since I do not see myself like that at al !35 και ου μη φοβηθω αλλα λαλησω ου γαρ ουτω συνεπισταμαι
