1 Job spoke next. He said:	1 - Ma Giobbe rispose e disse:
2 Indeed, I know it is as you say: how could anyone claim to be upright before God?	2 «Veramente io so che è così, e che l'uomo non può giustificarsi in confronto con Dio;
3 Anyone trying to argue matters with him, could not give him one answer in a thousand.	3 se egli volesse contender con lui, non potrebbe rispondergli una volta su mille.
4 Among the wisest and the hardiest, who then can successful y defy him?	4 Sapiente di cuore e gagliardo di forza, chi mai resistè contro lui e rimase tranquillo?
5 He moves the mountains, though they do not know it; he throws them down when he is angry.	5 Sposta egli i monti e non se n'avvedono, e li sconvolge nel furore suo:
6 He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place, making al its pil ars tremble.	6 fa traballar la terra dal suo sito, e le colonne di lei ne sono scosse:
7 The sun, at his command, forbears to rise, and on the stars he sets a seal.	7 dà un comando al sole ed esso non spunta, e tien racchiuse le stelle quasi sotto un suggello:
8 He and no other has stretched out the heavens and trampled on the back of the Sea.	8 i cieli egli stende da solo, incede sopra i flutti del mare:
9 He has made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South.	9 egli ha creato Arturo ed Orionele Pleiadi e le Costellazioni dell'Austro:
10 The works he does are great and unfathomable, and his marvels cannot be counted.	10 opera egli cose grandi ed incomprensibili, cose mirabili che non hanno numero.
11 If he passes me, I do not see him; he slips by, imperceptible to me.	11 Se egli a me viene, io non lo scorgo, se s'allontana, io non me ne avvedo;
12 If he snatches his prey, who is going to stop him or dare to ask, 'What are you doing?'	12 se di repente interroga, chi potrà rispondergli, ovver chi potrà dirgli: - Perchè fai così? -
13 God does not renounce his anger: beneath him, Rahab's minions stil lie prostrate.	13 Dio, alla cui ira nessuno può resistere, e sotto cui si curvano coloro che sostengono l'orbe,
14 And here am I, proposing to defend myself and select my arguments against him!	14 a costui, che grandezza ho io perchè possa rispondergli, e pronunciar le mie parole avanti a lui?
15 Even if I am upright, what point is there in answering him? I can only plead for mercy with my judge!	15 Al quale, ancor che io avessi qualche ragione, non risponderei, ma come a mio giudice chiederei pietà.
16 And if he deigned to answer my citation, I cannot believe he would listen to what I said,	16 E pur se mi rispondesse quand'io lo chiamassi [a giudizio], non avrei fiducia che ascolterebbe la mia voce:
17 he who crushes me for one hair, who, for no reason, wounds and wounds again,	17 egli invero nella procella mi sfracellerebbe, moltiplicherebbe le mie ferite pur senza ragione.
18 not even letting me regain my breath, with so much bitterness he fills me!	18 Egli non concede al mio spirito di riposarsi, e mi riempie d'amarezze.
19 Shal I try force? Look how strong he is! Or go to court? But who wil summon him?	19 Se si tratta di vigoria, - egli è il fortissimo, se dell'equità di giudizio - nessuno ardirà testimoniare per me.
20 If I prove myself upright, his mouth may condemn me, even if I am innocent, he may pronounce meperverse.	20 Se mi vorrò giustificare, la mia stessa bocca mi condannerà, se mostrarmi innocente, mi convincerà perverso.
21 But am I innocent? I am no longer sure, and life itself I despise!	21 Quand'anche io sia perfetto, ciò stesso l'anima mia l'ignorerà, e avrò a disdegno la mia vita.
22 It is al one, and hence I boldly say: he destroys innocent and guilty alike.	22 Questo solo è ciò ch'io ho detto:Sia l'innocente che l'empio è Lui che li distrugge.
23 When a sudden deadly scourge descends, he laughs at the plight of the innocent.	23 Se egli flagella, dia la morte all'istante, e delle pene degli innocenti non s'allieti.
24 When a country falls into the power of the wicked, he veils the faces of its judges. Or if not he, whoelse?	24 La terra è consegnata in mano al malvagio, il volto dei giudici d'essa egli benda; se non è Lui [che fa ciò], chi è dunque?
25 My days pass: more swiftly than a runner they flee away with never a glimpse of happiness,	25 E i miei dì furon veloci più che un corriere, fuggiron via e non videro il bene;
26 they skim past like a reed canoe, like an eagle swooping on its prey.	26 trascorsero oltre come vascelli di canna, come l'aquila che piomba sulla preda!
27 If I decide to stifle my complaining, change countenance, and wear a smiling face,	27 Se io esclamo: - Non voglio parlar più così! -mi stravolge il viso e mi strazia il dolore.
28 fear seizes me at the thought of al my woes, for I know you do not regard me as innocent.	28 Io temevo di tutte le mie azioni, sapendo che tu non perdoni a chi manca;
29 And if I have done wrong, why should I put myself to useless trouble?	29 chè se pur in tal modo io risulto empio, perchè dovrei travagliarmi senza vantaggio?
30 If I wash myself in melted snow, clean my hands with soda,	30 Se io mi lavassi con acqua di neve, e le mie mani risplendessero per mondezza,
31 you wil only plunge me into the dung, til my clothes themselves recoil from me!	31 nella lordura tu m'intingeresti, sì che m'avessero a schifo i miei stessi abiti.
32 For he is not human like me: impossible for me to answer him or appear alongside him in court.	32 Egli invero non è un uomo al pari di me, perchè io gli risponda, nè è tale che in giudizio come me possa ascoltarsi;
33 There is no arbiter between us, to lay his hand on both,	33 non c'è chi possa far da arbitro fra me e lui, e stender la mano su ambedue.
34 to stay his rod from me, or keep away his daunting terrors.	34 Ritiri egli da sopra a me il suo flagello, e il suo timore non mi sbigottisca:
35 Nonetheless, unafraid of him, I shal speak: since I do not see myself like that at al !	35 [a tal condizione] parlerei, senza temerlo, poichè intimorito io non posso rispondere.
