1 I had made an agreement with my eyes not to linger on any virgin.	1 « Feci patto coi miei occhi di non pensare neppure ad una vergine.
2 Now what portion does God al ot from above, what fate does Shaddai apportion from his heaven-	2 Che parte allora avrebbe di lassù Dio per me, e qual eredità avrebbe l'Onnipotente dall'alto?
3 if not the disasters appropriate to the wicked and the calamities fit for evil-doers?	3 Non è forse stabilita la perdizione pel malvagio e la diseredazione per chi opera l'iniquità?
4 But surely he sees how I behave, does he not count all my steps?	4 Non vede Egli la mia condotta, e non conta tutti i miei passi?
5 Have I been a fel ow-travel er with falsehood, or hastened my steps towards deceit?	5 Se camminai nella menzogna, se il mio piede corse alla frode,
6 Let him weigh me on accurate scales: then he, God, will recognise my integrity!	6 (mi pesi Dio su giusta bilancia e riconosca la mia integrità);
7 If my feet have wandered from the rightful path, or if my eyes have led my heart astray, or if my handsare smirched with any stain,	7 se il mio piede ha fuorviato, se dietro ai miei occhi andò il mio cuore, se alle mie mani s'attaccò qualche macchia,
8 let someone else eat what I have sown and let my young shoots all be rooted out.	8 io semini ed un altro mangi, e la mia progenie sia sradicata.
9 If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour's door,	9 Se il mio cuore è stato sedotto per una donna, se ho insidiato alla porta del mio amico,
10 let my wife go and grind for someone else, let others have intercourse with her!	10 sia abbandonata ad un altro la mia moglie e serva all'altrui libidine.
11 For I would have committed a sin of lust, a crime punishable by the law,	11 Ciò però è delitto nefando e grandissima iniquità,
12 a fire, indeed, burning al to Perdition, which would have devoured my whole revenue.	12 è fuoco che divora fino alla perdizione e distrugge ogni rampollo.
13 If I have ever infringed the rights of slave or slave-girl in legal actions against me-	13 Se sdegnai andare in giudizio col mio servo e colla mia serva quando erano in lite con me,
14 what shal I do, when God stands up? What shal I say, when he holds his assize?	14 che dovrei fare quando Dio si leverà a giudicare? Quando mi interrogherà, che potrei rispondere?
15 Did he not create them in the womb like me, the same God forming us in the womb?	15 Egli che fece me nel seno materno non fece forse anche lui? Non ci ha formati nel seno della madre il medesimo Dio?
16 Have I been insensible to the needs of the poor, or let a widow's eyes grow dim?	16 Se negai ai poveri quanto chiedevano, se feci aspettare gli occhi della vedova;
17 Have I eaten my bit of bread on my own without sharing it with the orphan?	17 se mangiai da solo il mio pezzo di pane, e non ne feci parte all'orfano,
18 I, whom God has fostered father-like from childhood, and guided since I left my mother's womb,	18 (chè la misericordia crebbe meco dalla mia infanzia e con me uscì dal seno di mia madre);
19 have I ever seen a wretch in need of clothing, or the poor with nothing to wear,	19 e non guardai pietoso colui che periva per mancanza di vesti e il povero che non aveva da coprirsi,
20 without his having cause to bless me from his heart, as he felt the warmth of the fleece from mylambs?	20 se i suoi fianchi non mi han benedetto, se egli non si è riscaldato colla lana delle mie pecore;
21 Have I raised my hand against an orphan, presuming on my credit at the gate?	21 se alzai la mano contro l'orfano, anche quando mi vedevo superiore alla porta,
22 If so, let my shoulder fal from its socket, let my arm break off at the elbow!	22 il mio omero si stacchi dalla sua giuntura, il mio braccio vada in frantumi colle sue ossa.
23 For the terror of God would fal on me and I could not then stand my ground before his majesty.	23 io però ebbi sempre timore di Dio come di flutti sopra me sospesi, e non ne avrei potuto sopportare il peso.
24 Have I put my faith in gold, saying to fine gold, 'Ah, my security'?	24 Se ho riposta nell'oro la mia forza, se dissi all'oro fino: Tu sei la mia speranza;
25 Have I ever gloated over my great wealth, or the riches that my hands have won?	25 se mi son rallegrato per le mie molte ricchezze, e perchè la mia mano ha accumulati molti beni;
26 Or has the sight of the sun in its glory, or the glow of the moon as it walked the sky,	26 se guardai il sole nel suo splendore e la luna che si avanzava nella sua chiarezza,
27 secretly stolen my heart, so that I blew them a kiss?	27 e il mio cuore si rallegrò segretamente e io baciai la mia mano colla mia bocca,
28 That too would be a criminal offence, to have denied the supreme God.	28 (il che è una grandissima iniquità e negazione dell'Altissimo Dio),
29 Have I rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune, or exulted when disaster overtook him? -	29 se mi rallegrai della rovina di chi ini odiava ed esultai quando lo raggiunse la sventura,
30 I, who would not allow my tongue to sin or to lay his life under a curse.	30 (io non permisi alla mia bocca di peccare, col mandare imprecazioni contro la vita di lui);
31 The people of my tent, did they not say, 'Will anyone name a person whom he has not fil ed withmeat?'	31 se gli uomini della mia tenda non dissero: Chi ci darà delle sue carni affinchè ci saziamo?
32 No stranger ever had to sleep outside, my door was always open to the traveller.	32 (il pellegrino non stette allo scoperto, la mia porta fu aperta al viaggiatore);
33 Have I ever concealed my transgression from others or kept my fault a secret in my breast?	33 se, come fa l'uomo, nascosi il mio peccato e celai nel mio seno la mia iniquità;
34 Have I ever stood in fear of common gossip, or dreaded any family's contempt, and so kept quiet, notventuring out of doors?	34 se ebbi paura della gran moltitudine e mi spaventò il disprezzo dei miei vicini, e non sono stato piuttosto in silenzio, senza passare la porta.
35 Will no one give me a hearing? I have said my last word; now let Shaddai reply! When my adversaryhas drafted his writ against me	35 Chi mi darà uno che mi ascolti e che l'Onnipotente esaudisca il mio desiderio e colui che giudica scriva egli stesso il libello?
36 I shall wear it on my shoulder, and bind it round my head like a royal turban.	36 Affinchè io lo porti sulle mie spalle e me lo avvolga alla testa qual diadema?
37 I shall give him an account of my every step and go as boldly as a prince to meet him.End of thewords of Job.	37 Ad ogni mio passo ne ripeterei le parole, e glielo presenterei come ad un principe.
38 If my land cries for vengeance against me and its furrows weep in concert,	38 Se la mia terra grida contro di me e se con lei piangono i suoi solchi,
39 if I have eaten its produce without paying, and caused the death of its owners,	39 se ho mangiato i suoi frutti senza pagare ed ho afflitto l'anima dei suoi agricoltori,
40 let brambles grow instead of wheat, rank weeds instead of barley!	40 invece di grano mi nascano triboli, invece dell'orzo spine ». (Sono finite le parole di Giobbe).
