NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 I had made an agreement with my eyes not to linger on any virgin.	1 Strinsi un patto con i miei occhi, di non fissare lo sguardo sulle ragazze.
2 Now what portion does God al ot from above, what fate does Shaddai apportion from his heaven-	2 Qual è la sorte che Dio ha assegnato dall'alto, e l'eredità che l'Onnipotente ha preparato dai luoghi eccelsi?
3 if not the disasters appropriate to the wicked and the calamities fit for evil-doers?	3 Non è forse la sciagura per il perverso e la sventura per chi compie il male?
4 But surely he sees how I behave, does he not count all my steps?	4 Non vede egli la mia condotta e non conta tutti i miei passi?
5 Have I been a fel ow-travel er with falsehood, or hastened my steps towards deceit?	5 Ho forse agito con falsità, e il mio piede si è affrettato verso la frode?
6 Let him weigh me on accurate scales: then he, God, will recognise my integrity!	6 Mi pesi pure sulla bilancia della giustizia e riconosca Dio la mia integrità!
7 If my feet have wandered from the rightful path, or if my eyes have led my heart astray, or if my handsare smirched with any stain,	7 Se il mio passo ha errato fuori strada e il mio cuore ha seguito i miei occhi, o una sozzura si è attaccata alle mie mani,
8 let someone else eat what I have sown and let my young shoots all be rooted out.	8 un altro mangi ciò che io semino e siano sradicati i miei germogli!
9 If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour's door,	9 Se il mio cuore fu sedotto da una donna, e ho spiato alla porta del mio prossimo,
10 let my wife go and grind for someone else, let others have intercourse with her!	10 mia moglie macini per un altro, e altri si accostino ad essa!
11 For I would have committed a sin of lust, a crime punishable by the law,	11 In verità, questa è un'infamia, un delitto da deferire ai giudici.
12 a fire, indeed, burning al to Perdition, which would have devoured my whole revenue.	12 Quello è un fuoco che divora fino alla distruzione, e avrebbe consumato tutto il mio raccolto.

15 Did he not create them in the womb like me, the same God forming us in the womb?	15 Chi ha fatto me nel seno materno, non ha fatto anche lui? Non fu lo stesso a formarci nel seno?
16 Have I been insensible to the needs of the poor, or let a widow's eyes grow dim?	16 Ho forse negato ai poveri quanto desideravano, od ho lasciato languire gli occhi della vedova?
17 Have I eaten my bit of bread on my own without sharing it with the orphan?	17 Ho forse mangiato da solo il mio tozzo di pane, senza spartirlo con l'orfano?
18 I, whom God has fostered father-like from childhood, and guided since I left my mother's womb,	18 Infatti fin dalla mia giovinezza mi ha curato come padre e mi ha guidato fin dal grembo di mia madre.
19 have I ever seen a wretch in need of clothing, or the poor with nothing to wear,	19 Se mai ho visto un misero privo di vesti e un indigente senza abito,
20 without his having cause to bless me from his heart, as he felt the warmth of the fleece from mylambs?	20 non mi hanno forse benedetto i suoi fianchi, e non si è forse riscaldato con la lana dei miei agnelli?
21 Have I raised my hand against an orphan, presuming on my credit at the gate?	21 Se ho alzato la mano contro l'orfano sapendomi appoggiato al tribunale,
22 If so, let my shoulder fal from its socket, let my arm break off at the elbow!	22 mi si stacchi la spalla dalla nuca e il mio braccio si spezzi dal gomito!
23 For the terror of God would fal on me and I could not then stand my ground before his majesty.	23 Perché mi atterra la disgrazia che Dio invia, non reggerei davanti alla sua maestà.
24 Have I put my faith in gold, saying to fine gold, 'Ah, my security'?	24 Ho forse riposto la mia fiducia nell'oro, e detto all'oro fino: "Tu sei la mia sicurezza"?
25 Have I ever gloated over my great wealth, or the riches that my hands have won?	25 Mi sono forse compiaciuto dell'abbondanza dei miei beni, e perché la mia mano aveva accumulato la ricchezza?
26 Or has the sight of the sun in its glory, or the glow of the moon as it walked the sky,	26 Quando vedevo risplendere il sole e la luna che avanzava maestosa,
27 secretly stolen my heart, so that I blew them a kiss?	27 si lasciò forse sedurre segretamente il mio cuore, mandando un bacio con la mano alla bocca?
28 That too would be a criminal offence, to have denied the supreme God.	28 Anche questo è un delitto per i giudici, perché avrei rinnegato Dio che sta in alto.
29 Have I rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune, or exulted when disaster overtook him? -	29 Mi sono forse rallegrato della disgrazia del mio nemico, e ho esultato, perché lo colpì la sventura?
30 I, who would not allow my tongue to sin or to lay his life under a curse.	30 Non ho neppure permesso alla mia bocca di peccare, augurandogli la sua morte con un'imprecazione!
31 The people of my tent, did they not say, 'Will anyone name a person whom he has not fil ed withmeat?'	31 Non diceva forse la gente della mia tenda: "Chi non si è sfamato della sua mensa?".
32 No stranger ever had to sleep outside, my door was always open to the traveller.	32 Il forestiero non passava la notte all'aperto; io aprivo le porte al pellegrino.
33 Have I ever concealed my transgression from others or kept my fault a secret in my breast?	33 Ho forse occultato come un uomo i miei peccati, tenendo celato il mio delitto dentro di me
34 Have I ever stood in fear of common gossip, or dreaded any family's contempt, and so kept quiet, notventuring out of doors?	34 per timore dell'opinione delle folle, come se il disprezzo della famiglia mi spaventasse, sì da starmene zitto senza uscir di casa?
35 Will no one give me a hearing? I have said my last word; now let Shaddai reply! When my adversaryhas drafted his writ against me	35 Oh, avessi uno che mi ascoltasse! Ecco la mia firma! L'Onnipotente mi risponda! Il mio rivale scriva il suo rotolo:
36 I shall wear it on my shoulder, and bind it round my head like a royal turban.	36 lo porterei sulle mie spalle e me lo cingerei come un diadema.
37 I shall give him an account of my every step and go as boldly as a prince to meet him.End of thewords of Job.	37 Gli darei resoconto di tutta la mia condotta; mi presenterei a lui come un principe.
38 If my land cries for vengeance against me and its furrows weep in concert,	38 Se la mia terra ha gridato contro di me e i suoi solchi hanno pianto con essa,
39 if I have eaten its produce without paying, and caused the death of its owners,	39 se ho mangiato i suoi frutti senza pagamento, facendo esalare l'ultimo respiro ai suoi coltivatori,
40 let brambles grow instead of wheat, rank weeds instead of barley!	40 le spine crescano invece del frumento e le ortiche al posto dell'orzo!". Fine delle parole di Giobbe.
