NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 I had made an agreement with my eyes not to linger on any virgin.	1 Yo establecí un pacto con mis ojos para no fijar la mirada en ninguna joven.
2 Now what portion does God al ot from above, what fate does Shaddai apportion from his heaven-	2 Porque ¿cuál es la porción que Dios asigna desde lo alto y la herencia que el Todopoderoso distribuye desde el cielo?
3 if not the disasters appropriate to the wicked and the calamities fit for evil-doers?	3 ¿No es la ruina para el injusto y el desastre para los que hacen el mal?
4 But surely he sees how I behave, does he not count all my steps?	4 ¿Acaso él no ve mis caminos y cuenta todos mis pasos?
5 Have I been a fel ow-travel er with falsehood, or hastened my steps towards deceit?	5 Si caminé al lado de la mentira y mis pies corrieron hacia el engaño,
6 Let him weigh me on accurate scales: then he, God, will recognise my integrity!	6 ¡que Dios me pese en una balanza justa y reconocerá mi integridad!
7 If my feet have wandered from the rightful path, or if my eyes have led my heart astray, or if my handsare smirched with any stain,	7 Si mi paso se desvió del camino y mi corazón fue detrás de lo que veían mis ojos; si alguna mancha se adhirió a mis manos,
8 let someone else eat what I have sown and let my young shoots all be rooted out.	8 ¡que otro coma lo que yo siembro y mis retoños sean arrancados de raíz!
9 If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour's door,	9 Si me dejé seducir por alguna mujer o aceché a la puerta de mi vecino,
10 let my wife go and grind for someone else, let others have intercourse with her!	10 ¡que mi mujer muela el grano para otro y que otros abusen de ella!
11 For I would have committed a sin of lust, a crime punishable by the law,	11 Porque eso sí que es una infamia, un delito reprobado por los jueces;
12 a fire, indeed, burning al to Perdition, which would have devoured my whole revenue.	12 es un fuego que devora hasta la Perdición y exterminará de raíz todas mis cosechas.
13 If I have ever infringed the rights of slave or slave-girl in legal actions against me-	13 Si desestimé el derecho de mi esclavo o el de mi servidora, cuando litigaban conmigo,
14 what shal I do, when God stands up? What shal I say, when he holds his assize?	14 ¿qué haré cuando Dios se levante, qué le replicaré cuando me pida cuenta?
15 Did he not create them in the womb like me, the same God forming us in the womb?	15 El que me hizo a mí, ¿no lo hizo también a él? ¿No es uno mismo el que nos formó en el seno materno?
16 Have I been insensible to the needs of the poor, or let a widow's eyes grow dim?	16 Si rehusé a los pobres lo que ellos deseaban y dejé desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;
17 Have I eaten my bit of bread on my own without sharing it with the orphan?	17 si comí yo solo mi pedazo de pan, sin que el huérfano lo compartiera
18 I, whom God has fostered father-like from childhood, and guided since I left my mother's womb,	18 –yo, que desde mi juventud lo crié como un padre y lo guié desde el vientre de mi madre–
19 have I ever seen a wretch in need of clothing, or the poor with nothing to wear,	19 si vi a un miserable sin ropa o a un indigente sin nada para cubrirse,
20 without his having cause to bless me from his heart, as he felt the warmth of the fleece from mylambs?	20 y no me bendijeron en lo íntimo de su ser por haberse calentado con el vellón de mis corderos;
21 Have I raised my hand against an orphan, presuming on my credit at the gate?	21 si alcé mi mano contra un huérfano, porque yo contaba con una ayuda en la Puerta,
22 If so, let my shoulder fal from its socket, let my arm break off at the elbow!	22 ¡que mi espada se desprenda del cuello y mi brazo sea arrancado de su juntura!
23 For the terror of God would fal on me and I could not then stand my ground before his majesty.	23 Porque el terror de Dios me acarrearía la ruina y no podría resistir ante su majestad.
24 Have I put my faith in gold, saying to fine gold, 'Ah, my security'?	24 Si deposité mi confianza en el oro y dije al oro fino: «Tú eres mi seguridad»;
25 Have I ever gloated over my great wealth, or the riches that my hands have won?	25 si me alegré de tener muchas riquezas y de haber adquirido una enorme fortuna;
26 Or has the sight of the sun in its glory, or the glow of the moon as it walked the sky,	26 si a la vista del sol resplandeciente y de la luna que pasaba radiante,
27 secretly stolen my heart, so that I blew them a kiss?	27 mi corazón se dejó seducir en secreto y le envié besos con la mano:
28 That too would be a criminal offence, to have denied the supreme God.	28 ¡también eso sería un delito reprobado por los jueces, porque yo habría renegado del Dios de lo alto!
29 Have I rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune, or exulted when disaster overtook him? -	29 ¿Acaso me alegré del infortunio de mi enemigo y me regocijé cuando le tocó una desgracia?
30 I, who would not allow my tongue to sin or to lay his life under a curse.	30 No, no dejé que mi boca pecara, pidiendo su muerte con una imprecación.
31 The people of my tent, did they not say, 'Will anyone name a person whom he has not fil ed withmeat?'	31 ¿No decían los hombres de mi carpa: «¿Hay alguien que no se sació con su carne?».
32 No stranger ever had to sleep outside, my door was always open to the traveller.	32 Ningún extranjero pasaba la noche afuera, y yo abría mi puerta al caminante.
33 Have I ever concealed my transgression from others or kept my fault a secret in my breast?	33 Si oculté mis transgresiones como un hombre cualquiera, escondiendo mi culpa en mi pecho,
34 Have I ever stood in fear of common gossip, or dreaded any family's contempt, and so kept quiet, notventuring out of doors?	34 porque temía el murmullo de la gente o me asustaba el desprecio de mis parientes, y me quedaba en silencio, sin salir a la puerta...
35 Will no one give me a hearing? I have said my last word; now let Shaddai reply! When my adversaryhas drafted his writ against me	35 ¡Ah, si alguien quisiera escucharme! Aquí está mi firma: ¡que el Todopoderoso me responda! En cuanto al documento que escriba mi oponente,
36 I shall wear it on my shoulder, and bind it round my head like a royal turban.	36 yo lo llevaré sobre mis espaldas, y me lo ceñiré como una corona.
37 I shall give him an account of my every step and go as boldly as a prince to meet him.End of thewords of Job.	37 Sí, le manifestaré cada uno de mis pasos; como un príncipe, me acercaré hasta él.
38 If my land cries for vengeance against me and its furrows weep in concert,	38 Si mi tierra gritó venganza contra mí y también sus surcos derramaron lágrimas;
39 if I have eaten its produce without paying, and caused the death of its owners,	39 si comí sus frutos sin pagar y extorsioné a sus propietarios,
40 let brambles grow instead of wheat, rank weeds instead of barley!	40 ¡que en lugar de trigo salgan espinas, y en vez de cebada, ortigas punzantes!
