Job 31

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 I had made an agreement with my eyes not to linger on any virgin.	1 - Un patto io conchiusi con gli occhi miei, di neppur pensare a una vergine:
2 Now what portion does God al ot from above, what fate does Shaddai apportion from his heaven-	2 giacchè qual parte avrebbe avuto in me Dio dall'alto, e quale eredità l'Onnipotente dall'eccelso?
3 if not the disasters appropriate to the wicked and the calamities fit for evil-doers?	3 La ruina non è forse per il disonesto, e la sventura per chi commette ingiustizia?
4 But surely he sees how I behave, does he not count all my steps?	4 non vede forse [Dio] le mie strade, e tutti i passi miei non conta Egli?
5 Have I been a fel ow-travel er with falsehood, or hastened my steps towards deceit?	5 Se ho proceduto con falsità, e s'affrettò verso la frode il mio piede,
6 Let him weigh me on accurate scales: then he, God, will recognise my integrity!	6 che Egli mi pesi pure in bilance giuste, e Dio conoscerà la mia schiettezza.
7 If my feet have wandered from the rightful path, or if my eyes have led my heart astray, or if my handsare smirched with any stain,	7 Se il mio passo si scostò dalla [retta] via, e dietro agli occhi miei andò il mio cuore, e qualche macchia s'attaccò alle mie mani:
8 let someone else eat what I have sown and let my young shoots all be rooted out.	8 quando io seminerò, un altro mangi [il frutto], e i miei proventi vadano divelti.
9 If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour's door,	9 Se il mio cuore fu sedotto per una donna, e alla porta del mio compagno stetti a spiare:
10 let my wife go and grind for someone else, let others have intercourse with her!	10 diventi mia moglie donna di piacere per altri, ed altri si curvino su lei.
11 For I would have committed a sin of lust, a crime punishable by the law,	11 Poichè è ben quella un'infamiae un'iniquità grandissima;
12 a fire, indeed, burning al to Perdition, which would have devoured my whole revenue.	12 è un fuoco che fino alla ruina divora, e che sradica ogni rampollo.
13 If I have ever infringed the rights of slave or slave-girl in legal actions against me-	13 Se sdegnai di venire a giudizio col mio servoe con la mia ancella, che si querelano contro di me:
14 what shal I do, when God stands up? What shal I say, when he holds his assize?	14 che cosa potrei fare quando Dio sorgesse a giudicare, e quando facesse un'inchiesta che cosa gli risponderei?
15 Did he not create them in the womb like me, the same God forming us in the womb?	15 Non mi ha forse formato nell'utero chi formò anche quello, e non ci ha fatti dentro al seno Uno stesso?
16 Have I been insensible to the needs of the poor, or let a widow's eyes grow dim?	16 Se negai ai poverelli quel che chiedevano, e gli occhi della vedova feci aspettare [invano],
17 Have I eaten my bit of bread on my own without sharing it with the orphan?	17 e se mangiai il mio boccone da me solo, senza che ne mangiasse anche l'orfano
18 I, whom God has fostered father-like from childhood, and guided since I left my mother's womb,	18 - poichè fin dalla mia infanzia crebbe insiem con me la compassione, e dal seno di mia madre era uscita meco -
19 have I ever seen a wretch in need of clothing, or the poor with nothing to wear,	19 se disprezzai uno sventurato perchè non aveva veste, e il povero ch'era senza coperta:
20 without his having cause to bless me from his heart, as he felt the warmth of the fleece from mylambs?	20 se non mi hanno benedetto i fianchi di questo tale, e se dalla lana delle mie pecore egli non si scaldò:
21 Have I raised my hand against an orphan, presuming on my credit at the gate?	21 se alzai la mano contro l'orfano, anche quando mi vedevo superiore nella porta;
22 If so, let my shoulder fal from its socket, let my arm break off at the elbow!	22 caschi pur l'omero mio dalla sua giuntura, ed il mio braccio con l'ossa sue si spezzi,
23 For the terror of God would fal on me and I could not then stand my ground before his majesty.	23 poichè sempre temetti Dio come flutto rigonfio su me, e la maestà di lui io non potei sostenere.
24 Have I put my faith in gold, saying to fine gold, 'Ah, my security'?	24 Se stimai l'oro come mia fortezza, e verso l'oro puro esclamai: - O mia fiducia! -
25 Have I ever gloated over my great wealth, or the riches that my hands have won?	25 se mi rallegrai per le molte mie ricchezze, e perchè molti beni stringeva la mia mano:
26 Or has the sight of the sun in its glory, or the glow of the moon as it walked the sky,	26 se contemplai il sole che fulgeva, e la luna che splendida incedeva,
27 secretly stolen my heart, so that I blew them a kiss?	27 e s'allietò in segreto il mio cuore, e portai la mano alla bocca per inviar baci:
28 That too would be a criminal offence, to have denied the supreme God.	28 questa sarebbe stata un'iniquità somma, e un rinnegare l'altissimo Dio;
29 Have I rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune, or exulted when disaster overtook him? -	29 se mi rallegrai della sventura di chi m'odiava, ed esultai perchè l'incolse un male,
30 I, who would not allow my tongue to sin or to lay his life under a curse.	30 e non impedii che la mia lingua peccassefacendo imprecazioni all'anima sua;
31 The people of my tent, did they not say, 'Will anyone name a person whom he has not fil ed withmeat?'	31 se non esclamarono i miei compagni di tenda: Chi c'è che delle sue vivande non si sia saziato?
32 No stranger ever had to sleep outside, my door was always open to the traveller.	32 poichè il pellegrino non rimase al di fuoriessendo aperta la mia porta al viandante:
33 Have I ever concealed my transgression from others or kept my fault a secret in my breast?	33 se nascosi, come fa l'uomo, la mia mancanza, e celai nel mio petto la mia iniquità;
34 Have I ever stood in fear of common gossip, or dreaded any family's contempt, and so kept quiet, notventuring out of doors?	34 se ebbi timore della gran moltitudine, e lo sprezzo delle famiglie m'intimidì, e non piuttosto serbai il silenzioe non uscii dalla mia porta:
35 Will no one give me a hearing? I have said my last word; now let Shaddai reply! When my adversaryhas drafted his writ against me	35 Oh! s'io avessi chi m'ascoltasse, sì che l'Onnipotente esaudisse il mio desiderio! Oh! se Egli che giudica scrivesse il libello [d'accusa]!
36 I shall wear it on my shoulder, and bind it round my head like a royal turban.	36 Sulla mia spalla [come trofeo] lo porterei, e me ne cingerei come fosse una corona!
37 I shall give him an account of my every step and go as boldly as a prince to meet him.End of thewords of Job.	37 A Lui di tutti i miei passi io darei conto, e [fiero] qual principe gli andrei incontro.
38 If my land cries for vengeance against me and its furrows weep in concert,	38 Se contro di me il mio terreno grida, ed insiem con esso i suoi solchi piangono;
39 if I have eaten its produce without paying, and caused the death of its owners,	39 se i suoi frutti mangiai senza pagarli, e l'anima degli agricoltori afflissi:
40 let brambles grow instead of wheat, rank weeds instead of barley!	40 invece di frumenti mi nascano triboli, e invece di orzo, spine!»
