1 I had made an agreement with my eyes not to linger on any virgin.	1 Feci patto cogli occhi miei di non pensar neppure a una vergine.
2 Now what portion does God al ot from above, what fate does Shaddai apportion from his heaven-	2 Perocché qual communicazione avrebbe con me di lassù Iddio, e come avrebbe possesso di me l'Onnipotente dall'alto?
3 if not the disasters appropriate to the wicked and the calamities fit for evil-doers?	3 Non è ella stabilita pe' malvagi la perdizione, e la diseredazione per quelli, che commettono l'iniquità?
4 But surely he sees how I behave, does he not count all my steps?	4 Non istà egli attento a tutti i miei andamenti, e non conta egli tutti i miei passi?
5 Have I been a fel ow-travel er with falsehood, or hastened my steps towards deceit?	5 Se io amai la menzogna, e se i miei piedi corsero a tessere degli inganni.
6 Let him weigh me on accurate scales: then he, God, will recognise my integrity!	6 Mi pesi Dio sulla sua giusta bilancia, e conosca la mia schiettezza.
7 If my feet have wandered from the rightful path, or if my eyes have led my heart astray, or if my handsare smirched with any stain,	7 Se torsero dalla retta via i miei passi, e se dietro a' miei occhi se n'andò il mio cuore, e macchia si attaccò alle mie mani,
8 let someone else eat what I have sown and let my young shoots all be rooted out.	8 Semini io, e un altro si mangi il frutto, e sia sradicata la mia progenie.
9 If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour's door,	9 Se fu sedotto il mio cuore per amore di donna, e se insidiai alla porta del mio amico,
10 let my wife go and grind for someone else, let others have intercourse with her!	10 Sia svituperata da un altro la mia consorte, e serva alla libidine altrui.
11 For I would have committed a sin of lust, a crime punishable by the law,	11 Perocché questa è scelleraggine orrenda, e grandissima iniquità.
12 a fire, indeed, burning al to Perdition, which would have devoured my whole revenue.	12 Ella è fuoco che brugerà sino all'esterminio, e che tutti estirpa i rampolli.
13 If I have ever infringed the rights of slave or slave-girl in legal actions against me-	13 Se io sdegnai di venire a discussione col mio servo, e cuna mia serva, quando si querelavan di me;
14 what shal I do, when God stands up? What shal I say, when he holds his assize?	14 Perocché come fare' io allorché il Signore si alzerà a far giudizio? e quando mi interrogherà, che potre'io rispondergli?
15 Did he not create them in the womb like me, the same God forming us in the womb?	15 Non fece egli me chi fece anche lui; e forse quell'uno non ci formò nel sen della madre?
16 Have I been insensible to the needs of the poor, or let a widow's eyes grow dim?	16 Se negai a' poveri quello che domandavano, e se delusi l'espettazione della vedova.
17 Have I eaten my bit of bread on my own without sharing it with the orphan?	17 Se il mio pane mangiai da me solo, e non ne feci parte al pupillo:
18 I, whom God has fostered father-like from childhood, and guided since I left my mother's womb,	18 Perocché dall'infanzia meco crebbe la misericordia, e meco uscì dal sen, di mia madre.
19 have I ever seen a wretch in need of clothing, or the poor with nothing to wear,	19 Se disprezzai colui, che periva, perché non avea da coprirsi, e il povero, ch'era ignudo.
20 without his having cause to bless me from his heart, as he felt the warmth of the fleece from mylambs?	20 Se neo mi han date benedizioni i suoi fianchi, e se egli non fu riscaldato dalla lana delle mie pecore:
21 Have I raised my hand against an orphan, presuming on my credit at the gate?	21 Se la mano alzai contro il pupillo, anche quando mi vedea superiore alla porta;
22 If so, let my shoulder fal from its socket, let my arm break off at the elbow!	22 Si stacchi il mio omero dalla sua giuntura, e il mio braccio si spezzi colle sue ossa.
23 For the terror of God would fal on me and I could not then stand my ground before his majesty.	23 Perocché temei sempre Dio, come una piena di acque sospesa sopra di me, e la maestà di lui non poteva io sostenere.
24 Have I put my faith in gold, saying to fine gold, 'Ah, my security'?	24 Se il poter mio credetti che consistesse nell'oro, e se all'oro fino io dissi: Confido in te.
25 Have I ever gloated over my great wealth, or the riches that my hands have won?	25 Se mia consolazione riposi nelle mie molte ricchezze, e ne' molti acquisti fatti colle mie mani.
26 Or has the sight of the sun in its glory, or the glow of the moon as it walked the sky,	26 Se al sole alzai gli occhi quando vibrava splendori, e alla luna quand'era più chiara:
27 secretly stolen my heart, so that I blew them a kiss?	27 E si rallegrò segretamente il cuor mio, e la mia mano portai alla bocca per baciarla:
28 That too would be a criminal offence, to have denied the supreme God.	28 Lo che è delitto grandissimo, ed è un rinnegare l'altissimo Iddio.
29 Have I rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune, or exulted when disaster overtook him? -	29 Se mi rallegrai della rovina di chi mi odiava, e festeggiai pel male, in cui era caduto.
30 I, who would not allow my tongue to sin or to lay his life under a curse.	30 Perocché non permisi che la mia lingua peccasse col mandare imprecazioni contro la vita di lui.
31 The people of my tent, did they not say, 'Will anyone name a person whom he has not fil ed withmeat?'	31 Se la gente della mia casa non dicevano: Chi ci darà, a mangiare dello sue carni?
32 No stranger ever had to sleep outside, my door was always open to the traveller.	32 Non istette il pellegrino allo scoperto; la mia porta fu aperta al passaggero.
33 Have I ever concealed my transgression from others or kept my fault a secret in my breast?	33 Se, qual suole l'uomo; io ascosi il mio peccato, e celai nel mio seno l'iniquità:
34 Have I ever stood in fear of common gossip, or dreaded any family's contempt, and so kept quiet, notventuring out of doors?	34 Se la gran turba m'intimidì, e se mi spaventò il disprezzo dei parenti, e se non piuttosto mi tacqui, e non uscii di mia casa.
35 Will no one give me a hearing? I have said my last word; now let Shaddai reply! When my adversaryhas drafted his writ against me	35 Chi mi darà uno che mi ascolti, e che i miei desiderj esaudisca l'Onnipotente, e colui che giudica scriva egli il libello;
36 I shall wear it on my shoulder, and bind it round my head like a royal turban.	36 Affinchè sull'omero mio io lo porti, e me l'avvolga alla testa qual diadema?
37 I shall give him an account of my every step and go as boldly as a prince to meet him.End of thewords of Job.	37 Lo reciterei a parte a parte, e lo presenterei a lui, come a mio principe.
38 If my land cries for vengeance against me and its furrows weep in concert,	38 Se la mia terra grida contro di me, e se con lei piangono i solchi:
39 if I have eaten its produce without paying, and caused the death of its owners,	39 Se senza pagarne il prezzo ho io mangiati i suoi frutti, e afflissi l'anima di quelli, che la coltivano:
40 let brambles grow instead of wheat, rank weeds instead of barley!	40 Nascano per me triboli in vece di grano, e spine in cambio di orzo.
