Job 29

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 And Job continued his solemn discourse. He said:	1 Giobbe riprese a pronunciare i suoi versi dicendo:
2 Wil no one bring back to me the months that have gone, and the days when God was my guardian,	2 "Chi mi renderà come ai giorni antichi, quando Dio mi proteggeva,
3 when his lamp shone over my head, and his light was my guide in the darkness?	3 quando la sua lucerna brillava sopra il mio capo e alla sua luce camminavo in mezzo alle tenebre?
4 Shal I ever see my days of harvest again when God protected my tent;	4 Com'ero ai giorni del mio autunno, quando l'amicizia di Dio riposava sulla mia tenda,
5 when Shaddai stil dwelt with me, and my children were around me;	5 quando l'Onnipotente era ancora con me e i miei figli mi stavano intorno!
6 when my feet were bathed in milk, and streams of oil poured from the rocks?	6 Lavavo i piedi nel latte e la roccia mi versava ruscelli d'olio.
7 When I went out to the gate of the city, when I took my seat in the square,	7 Quando uscivo verso la porta della città e disponevo il mio seggio in piazza,
8 as soon as I appeared, the young men stepped aside, and the old men rose to their feet.	8 i giovani, vedendomi, si tiravano in disparte, gli anziani si alzavano rimanendo in piedi.
9 Men of note broke off their speeches, and put their hands over their mouths;	9 I notabili si astenevano dal parlare e si ponevano la mano alla bocca.
10 the voices of rulers were silenced, and their tongues stayed stil in their mouths.	10 La voce dei capi si smorzava e la loro lingua si incollava al palato.
11 On hearing me, people congratulated me, on seeing me, people deferred to me,	11 L'orecchio che mi ascoltava, mi proclamava felice, e l'occhio che mi vedeva, mi rendeva testimonianza;
12 because I freed the poor in distress and the orphan who had no helper.	12 soccorrevo il povero che chiedeva aiuto e l'orfano che nessuno assisteva.
13 The dying man's blessing rested on me and I gave the widow's heart cause to rejoice.	13 La benedizione del morente scendeva su di me e rendevo la gioia al cuore della vedova.
14 Uprightness I wore as a garment, fair judgement was my cloak and my turban.	14 Mi ero rivestito di giustizia come di un vestimento, la mia equità era come mantello e turbante.
15 I was eyes for the blind, and feet for the lame.	15 Ero occhi per il cieco e piedi per lo zoppo;
16 Who but me was father of the poor? The stranger's case had a hearing from me.	16 ero padre per i poveri ed esaminavo la causa dello sconosciuto.
17 I used to break the fangs of the wicked, and snatch their prey from their jaws.	17 Spezzavo le mascelle dell'iniquo e dai suoi denti strappavo la preda.
18 And I used to say, 'I shall die in honour, after days as numerous as the sand.	18 E pensavo: "Spirerò nel mio nido; aumenterò i miei anni come la sabbia.
19 My roots can reach the water, the dews of night settle on my leaves.	19 La mia radice si alimenterà alle acque e la rugiada cadrà di notte sul mio ramo.
20 My glory wil be for ever new and the bow in my hand for ever strong.'	20 Il mio prestigio sarà sempre nuovo e il mio arco si rinforzerà nella mia mano".
21 They waited anxiously to hear me, and listened in silence to what I had to say.	21 Mi ascoltavano in fiduciosa attesa e tacevano per udire il mio consiglio.
22 When I had finished, no one contradicted, my words dropping on them, one by one.	22 Dopo che avevano parlato, non replicavano; su di loro cadevano goccia a goccia i miei detti.
23 They waited for me as though for rain, open-mouthed as though for a late shower.	23 Li attendevano come si aspetta la pioggia, e li bevevano come acqua di primavera.
24 If I smiled at them, it was too good to be true, they watched my face for the least sign of favour.	24 Se scherzavo, non credevano, e non lasciavano cadere nemmeno un gesto del mio favore.
25 As their chief, I told them which course to take, like a king living among his troops, and I led themwherever I chose.	25 Seduto come capo, fissavo loro la via, e vi rimanevo come un re fra le sue schiere; dove li guidavo, si lasciavano condurre.
