Job 29

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 And Job continued his solemn discourse. He said:	1 - E continuò Giobbe, riprendendo la sua sentenza, e disse:
2 Wil no one bring back to me the months that have gone, and the days when God was my guardian,	2 «Oh! se io potessi tornare come ai mesi di prima, come ai giorni in cui Dio mi custodiva!
3 when his lamp shone over my head, and his light was my guide in the darkness?	3 Allorchè splendeva la sua lucerna sul mio capo, e alla sua luce camminavo fra le tenebre!
4 Shal I ever see my days of harvest again when God protected my tent;	4 Com'ero ai giorni di mia giovinezza, allorchè Dio segretamente stava nella mia tenda;
5 when Shaddai stil dwelt with me, and my children were around me;	5 quando l'Onnipotente era meco, e attorno a me stavano i miei ragazzi;
6 when my feet were bathed in milk, and streams of oil poured from the rocks?	6 quando i miei piedi guazzavano nella pannae dal sasso scaturivano per me ruscelli d'olio;
7 When I went out to the gate of the city, when I took my seat in the square,	7 quando, incamminandomi verso la porta della città, mi preparavano il seggio sulla piazza!
8 as soon as I appeared, the young men stepped aside, and the old men rose to their feet.	8 Vedendomi, i giovani si nascondevano, i vecchi s'alzavano e rimanevano in piedi;
9 Men of note broke off their speeches, and put their hands over their mouths;	9 i maggiorenti cessavano di parlare, mettendosi il dito sulla bocca:
10 the voices of rulers were silenced, and their tongues stayed stil in their mouths.	10 i nobili ritenevano la lor voce, e la lor lingua s'attaccava al palato.
11 On hearing me, people congratulated me, on seeing me, people deferred to me,	11 L'orecchio che udiva mi proclamava beato, e l'occhio che vedeva mi testimoniava [la lode];
12 because I freed the poor in distress and the orphan who had no helper.	12 giacchè io liberavo il povero che gridava [al soccorso], e l'orfano che non aveva difensore:
13 The dying man's blessing rested on me and I gave the widow's heart cause to rejoice.	13 la benedizione del pericolante veniva su di me, e al cuor della vedova porgevo io conforto;
14 Uprightness I wore as a garment, fair judgement was my cloak and my turban.	14 di giustizia io m'ammantavo, e mi rivestivocome di manto e diadema del mio diritto.
15 I was eyes for the blind, and feet for the lame.	15 L'occhio io fui per il cieco, e il piede fui per lo storpio;
16 Who but me was father of the poor? The stranger's case had a hearing from me.	16 dei poveri ero io il padre, e la difesa di chi m'era ignoto io m'assumevo con zelo;
17 I used to break the fangs of the wicked, and snatch their prey from their jaws.	17 spezzavo io le zanne del malvagio, e da' suoi denti cacciavo fuori la preda.
18 And I used to say, 'I shall die in honour, after days as numerous as the sand.	18 E dicevo: - Nel mio niduccio io morirò, e come la palma moltiplicherò i miei giorni;
19 My roots can reach the water, the dews of night settle on my leaves.	19 La mia radice s'espande verso l'acque , e la rugiada dimora sui miei rami;
20 My glory wil be for ever new and the bow in my hand for ever strong.'	20 la mia gloria sempre si rinnova, e l'arco mio in mia mano ringiovanisce! -
21 They waited anxiously to hear me, and listened in silence to what I had to say.	21 Coloro che mi ascoltavano aspettavano la decisione, e tacevano intenti al mio consiglio;
22 When I had finished, no one contradicted, my words dropping on them, one by one.	22 dopo le mie parole non ardivano replicare, e su di essi cadeva a stille il mio discorso:
23 They waited for me as though for rain, open-mouthed as though for a late shower.	23 aspettavano me come la pioggia, aprendo la loro bocca come [terreno] a pioggia tardiva.
24 If I smiled at them, it was too good to be true, they watched my face for the least sign of favour.	24 Se talvolta io sorridevo loro, ad essi non pareva vero, e lo splendore del mio volto non cadeva invano.
25 As their chief, I told them which course to take, like a king living among his troops, and I led themwherever I chose.	25 Quando gradivo andare da loro, mi assidevo per primo: e pur sedendo qual re in mezzo alle schiere, ero tuttavia consolatore degli afflitti.
