Job 29

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 And Job continued his solemn discourse. He said:	1 Giobbe continuò il suo discorso dicendo:
2 Wil no one bring back to me the months that have gone, and the days when God was my guardian,	2 «Potessi tornare com’ero ai mesi andati, ai giorni in cui Dio vegliava su di me,
3 when his lamp shone over my head, and his light was my guide in the darkness?	3 quando brillava la sua lucerna sopra il mio capo e alla sua luce camminavo in mezzo alle tenebre;
4 Shal I ever see my days of harvest again when God protected my tent;	4 com’ero nei giorni del mio rigoglio, quando Dio proteggeva la mia tenda,
5 when Shaddai stil dwelt with me, and my children were around me;	5 quando l’Onnipotente stava ancora con me e i miei giovani mi circondavano,
6 when my feet were bathed in milk, and streams of oil poured from the rocks?	6 quando mi lavavo i piedi nella panna e la roccia mi versava ruscelli d’olio!
7 When I went out to the gate of the city, when I took my seat in the square,	7 Quando uscivo verso la porta della città e sulla piazza ponevo il mio seggio,
8 as soon as I appeared, the young men stepped aside, and the old men rose to their feet.	8 vedendomi, i giovani si ritiravano e i vecchi si alzavano in piedi,
9 Men of note broke off their speeches, and put their hands over their mouths;	9 i notabili sospendevano i loro discorsi e si mettevano la mano alla bocca,
10 the voices of rulers were silenced, and their tongues stayed stil in their mouths.	10 la voce dei capi si smorzava e la loro lingua restava fissa al palato;
11 On hearing me, people congratulated me, on seeing me, people deferred to me,	11 infatti con gli orecchi ascoltavano e mi dicevano felice, con gli occhi vedevano e mi rendevano testimonianza,
12 because I freed the poor in distress and the orphan who had no helper.	12 perché soccorrevo il povero che chiedeva aiuto e l’orfano che ne era privo.
13 The dying man's blessing rested on me and I gave the widow's heart cause to rejoice.	13 La benedizione del disperato scendeva su di me e al cuore della vedova infondevo la gioia.
14 Uprightness I wore as a garment, fair judgement was my cloak and my turban.	14 Ero rivestito di giustizia come di un abito, come mantello e turbante era la mia equità.
15 I was eyes for the blind, and feet for the lame.	15 Io ero gli occhi per il cieco, ero i piedi per lo zoppo.
16 Who but me was father of the poor? The stranger's case had a hearing from me.	16 Padre io ero per i poveri ed esaminavo la causa dello sconosciuto,
17 I used to break the fangs of the wicked, and snatch their prey from their jaws.	17 spezzavo le mascelle al perverso e dai suoi denti strappavo la preda.
18 And I used to say, 'I shall die in honour, after days as numerous as the sand.	18 Pensavo: “Spirerò nel mio nido e moltiplicherò i miei giorni come la fenice.
19 My roots can reach the water, the dews of night settle on my leaves.	19 Le mie radici si estenderanno fino all’acqua e la rugiada di notte si poserà sul mio ramo.
20 My glory wil be for ever new and the bow in my hand for ever strong.'	20 La mia gloria si rinnoverà in me e il mio arco si rinforzerà nella mia mano”.
21 They waited anxiously to hear me, and listened in silence to what I had to say.	21 Mi ascoltavano in attesa fiduciosa e tacevano per udire il mio consiglio.
22 When I had finished, no one contradicted, my words dropping on them, one by one.	22 Dopo le mie parole non replicavano, e su di loro stillava il mio dire.
23 They waited for me as though for rain, open-mouthed as though for a late shower.	23 Le attendevano come si attende la pioggia e aprivano la bocca come ad acqua primaverile.
24 If I smiled at them, it was too good to be true, they watched my face for the least sign of favour.	24 Se a loro sorridevo, non osavano crederlo, non si lasciavano sfuggire la benevolenza del mio volto.
25 As their chief, I told them which course to take, like a king living among his troops, and I led themwherever I chose.	25 Indicavo loro la via da seguire e sedevo come capo, e vi rimanevo come un re fra le sue schiere o come un consolatore di afflitti.
