1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king of Judah	1 וּבִשְׁנַת שְׁמֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה לַמֶּלֶךְ יָרָבְעָם בֶּן־נְבָט מָלַךְ אֲבִיָּם עַל־יְהוּדָה
2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant of Absalom.	2 שָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנִים מָלַךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָם וְשֵׁם אִמֹּו מַעֲכָה בַּת־אֲבִישָׁלֹום
3 In everything he fol owed the sinful example of his father before him; his heart was not wholly withYahweh his God, as the heart of David his ancestor had been.	3 וַיֵּלֶךְ בְּכָל־חַטֹּאות אָבִיו אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂה לְפָנָיו וְלֹא־הָיָה לְבָבֹו שָׁלֵם עִם־יְהוָה אֱלֹהָיו כִּלְבַב דָּוִד אָבִיו
4 However, for David's sake, Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, with a son to succeed him,so keeping Jerusalem secure;	4 כִּי לְמַעַן דָּוִד נָתַן יְהוָה אֱלֹהָיו לֹו נִיר בִּירוּשָׁלִָם לְהָקִים אֶת־בְּנֹו אַחֲרָיו וּלְהַעֲמִיד אֶת־יְרוּשָׁלִָם
5 for David had done what Yahweh regarded as right and had never in all his life disobeyed whatever hecommanded him (except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite).	5 אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה דָוִד אֶת־הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה וְלֹא־סָר מִכֹּל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּהוּ כֹּל יְמֵי חַיָּיו רַק בִּדְבַר אוּרִיָּה הַחִתִּי
6 .	6 וּמִלְחָמָה הָיְתָה בֵין־רְחַבְעָם וּבֵין יָרָבְעָם כָּל־יְמֵי חַיָּיו
7 The rest of the history of Abijam, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah? Abijam and Jeroboam made war on each other.	7 וְיֶתֶר דִּבְרֵי אֲבִיָּם וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הֲלֹוא־הֵם כְּתוּבִים עַל־סֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים לְמַלְכֵי יְהוּדָה וּמִלְחָמָה הָיְתָה בֵּין אֲבִיָּם וּבֵין יָרָבְעָם
8 When Abijam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asa succeededhim.	8 וַיִּשְׁכַּב אֲבִיָּם עִם־אֲבֹתָיו וַיִּקְבְּרוּ אֹתֹו בְּעִיר דָּוִד וַיִּמְלֹךְ אָסָא בְנֹו תַּחְתָּיו׃ פ
9 In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah	9 וּבִשְׁנַת עֶשְׂרִים לְיָרָבְעָם מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל מָלַךְ אָסָא מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה
10 and reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant ofAbsalom.	10 וְאַרְבָּעִים וְאַחַת שָׁנָה מָלַךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָם וְשֵׁם אִמֹּו מַעֲכָה בַּת־אֲבִישָׁלֹום
11 Asa did what Yahweh regards as right, as his ancestor David had done.	11 וַיַּעַשׂ אָסָא הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה כְּדָוִד אָבִיו
12 He drove the male prostitutes out of the country and got rid of all the idols which his ancestors hadmade.	12 וַיַּעֲבֵר הַקְּדֵשִׁים מִן־הָאָרֶץ וַיָּסַר אֶת־כָּל־הַגִּלֻּלִים אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ אֲבֹתָיו
13 He even deprived his grandmother Maacah of the dignity of Great Lady for having made an obscenityfor Asherah; Asa cut down her obscenity and burnt it in the ravine of the Kidron.	13 וְגַם ׀ אֶת־מַעֲכָה אִמֹּו וַיְסִרֶהָ מִגְּבִירָה אֲשֶׁר־עָשְׂתָה מִפְלֶצֶת לָאֲשֵׁרָה וַיִּכְרֹת אָסָא אֶת־מִפְלַצְתָּהּ וַיִּשְׂרֹף בְּנַחַל קִדְרֹון
14 Though the high places were not abolished, Asa's heart was loyal to Yahweh throughout his life.	14 וְהַבָּמֹות לֹא־סָרוּ רַק לְבַב־אָסָא הָיָה שָׁלֵם עִם־יְהוָה כָּל־יָמָיו
15 He deposited his father's and his own dedicated gifts of silver, gold and sacred vessels in the Templeof Yahweh.	15 וַיָּבֵא אֶת־קָדְשֵׁי אָבִיו [וְקָדְשֹׁו כ] (וְקָדְשֵׁי ק) בֵּית יְהוָה כֶּסֶף וְזָהָב וְכֵלִים
16 Asa and Baasha king of Israel were at war with each other throughout their reigns.	16 וּמִלְחָמָה הָיְתָה בֵּין אָסָא וּבֵין בַּעְשָׁא מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל כָּל־יְמֵיהֶם
17 Baasha king of Israel marched on Judah and fortified Ramah to blockade Asa king of Judah.	17 וַיַּעַל בַּעְשָׁא מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל עַל־יְהוּדָה וַיִּבֶן אֶת־הָרָמָה לְבִלְתִּי תֵּת יֹצֵא וָבָא לְאָסָא מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה
18 Asa then took al the remaining silver and gold left in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and theroyal palace. Entrusting this to his servants, King Asa sent them with the fol owing message to Ben-Hadad sonof Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, the king of Aram who lived in Damascus,	18 וַיִּקַּח אָסָא אֶת־כָּל־הַכֶּסֶף וְהַזָּהָב הַנֹּותָרִים ׀ בְּאֹוצְרֹות בֵּית־יְהוָה וְאֶת־אֹוצְרֹות בֵּית [מֶלֶךְ כ] (הַמֶּלֶךְ ק) וַיִּתְּנֵם בְּיַד־עֲבָדָיו וַיִּשְׁלָחֵם הַמֶּלֶךְ אָסָא אֶל־בֶּן־הֲדַד בֶּן־טַבְרִמֹּן בֶּן־חֶזְיֹון מֶלֶךְ אֲרָם הַיֹּשֵׁב בְּדַמֶּשֶׂק לֵאמֹר
19 'Let us make an al iance between myself and yourself, between my father and your father! Look, Ihave sent you a gift of silver and gold. Come, break off your al iance with Baasha king of Israel, which wil makehim withdraw from me.'	19 בְּרִית בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶךָ בֵּין אָבִי וּבֵין אָבִיךָ הִנֵּה שָׁלַחְתִּי לְךָ שֹׁחַד כֶּסֶף וְזָהָב לֵךְ הָפֵרָה אֶת־בְּרִיתְךָ אֶת־בַּעְשָׁא מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיַעֲלֶה מֵעָלָי
20 Ben-Hadad listened favourably to King Asa, and sent the generals of his armies to attack the towns ofIsrael; he ravaged Ijon, Dan, Abel-Beth-Maacah, al Chinneroth, and the whole territory of Naphtali.	20 וַיִּשְׁמַע בֶּן־הֲדַד אֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ אָסָא וַיִּשְׁלַח אֶת־שָׂרֵי הַחֲיָלִים אֲשֶׁר־לֹו עַל־עָרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּךְ אֶת־עִיֹּון וְאֶת־דָּן וְאֵת אָבֵל בֵּית־מַעֲכָה וְאֵת כָּל־כִּנְרֹות עַל כָּל־אֶרֶץ נַפְתָּלִי
21 When Baasha heard this he gave up fortifying Ramah and retired to Tirzah.	21 וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ בַּעְשָׁא וַיֶּחְדַּל מִבְּנֹות אֶת־הָרָמָה וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּתִרְצָה
22 King Asa then summoned al Judah, no one was exempt; they took away the stones and timber withwhich Baasha had been fortifying Ramah, and King Asa used them to fortify Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.	22 וְהַמֶּלֶךְ אָסָא הִשְׁמִיעַ אֶת־כָּל־יְהוּדָה אֵין נָקִי וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת־אַבְנֵי הָרָמָה וְאֶת־עֵצֶיהָ אֲשֶׁר בָּנָה בַּעְשָׁא וַיִּבֶן בָּם הַמֶּלֶךְ אָסָא אֶת־גֶּבַע בִּנְיָמִן וְאֶת־הַמִּצְפָּה
23 The rest of the history of Asa, al his valour, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of theAnnals of the Kings of Judah? In his old age, however, he contracted a disease of his feet.	23 וְיֶתֶר כָּל־דִּבְרֵי־אָסָא וְכָל־גְּבוּרָתֹו וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה וְהֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר בָּנָה הֲלֹא־הֵמָּה כְתוּבִים עַל־סֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים לְמַלְכֵי יְהוּדָה רַק לְעֵת זִקְנָתֹו חָלָה אֶת־רַגְלָיו
24 When Asa fell asleep with his ancestors, he was buried with his ancestors in the City of his ancestorDavid; his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him.	24 וַיִּשְׁכַּב אָסָא עִם־אֲבֹתָיו וַיִּקָּבֵר עִם־אֲבֹתָיו בְּעִיר דָּוִד אָבִיו וַיִּמְלֹךְ יְהֹושָׁפָט בְּנֹו תַּחְתָּיו׃ פ
25 Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and hereigned over Israel for two years.	25 וְנָדָב בֶּן־יָרָבְעָם מָלַךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּשְׁנַת שְׁתַּיִם לְאָסָא מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה וַיִּמְלֹךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁנָתָיִם
26 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied his father's example and the sin into which he hadled Israel.	26 וַיַּעַשׂ הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה וַיֵּלֶךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ אָבִיו וּבְחַטָּאתֹו אֲשֶׁר הֶחֱטִיא אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל
27 Baasha son of Ahijah, of the House of Issachar, plotted against him and murdered him at Gibbethon,a Philistine town which Nadab and all Israel were besieging.	27 וַיִּקְשֹׁר עָלָיו בַּעְשָׁא בֶן־אֲחִיָּה לְבֵית יִשָּׂשכָר וַיַּכֵּהוּ בַעְשָׁא בְּגִבְּתֹון אֲשֶׁר לַפְּלִשְׁתִּים וְנָדָב וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל צָרִים עַל־גִּבְּתֹון
28 Baasha kil ed Nadab and succeeded him in the third year of Asa king of Judah.	28 וַיְמִתֵהוּ בַעְשָׁא בִּשְׁנַת שָׁלֹשׁ לְאָסָא מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה וַיִּמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו
29 No sooner was he king than he butchered the entire House of Jeroboam, not sparing a soul, and putan end to it, just as Yahweh had foretold through his servant Ahijah of Shiloh,	29 וַיְהִי כְמָלְכֹו הִכָּה אֶת־כָּל־בֵּית יָרָבְעָם לֹא־הִשְׁאִיר כָּל־נְשָׁמָה לְיָרָבְעָם עַד־הִשְׁמִדֹו כִּדְבַר יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר בְּיַד־עַבְדֹּו אֲחִיָּה הַשִּׁילֹנִי
30 because of the sins which he had committed and into which he had led Israel, and because he hadprovoked the anger of Yahweh, God of Israel.	30 עַל־חַטֹּאות יָרָבְעָם אֲשֶׁר חָטָא וַאֲשֶׁר הֶחֱטִיא אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּכַעְסֹו אֲשֶׁר הִכְעִיס אֶת־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
31 The rest of the history of Nadab, his entire career, is this not recorded in	31 וְיֶתֶר דִּבְרֵי נָדָב וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הֲלֹא־הֵם כְּתוּבִים עַל־סֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים לְמַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
32 the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?	32 וּמִלְחָמָה הָיְתָה בֵּין אָסָא וּבֵין בַּעְשָׁא מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל כָּל־יְמֵיהֶם׃ פ
33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of Israel at Tirzah fortwenty-four years.	33 בִּשְׁנַת שָׁלֹשׁ לְאָסָא מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה מָלַךְ בַּעְשָׁא בֶן־אֲחִיָּה עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּתִרְצָה עֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבַּע שָׁנָה
34 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied the example of Jeroboam and the sin into which hehad led Israel.	34 וַיַּעַשׂ הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה וַיֵּלֶךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ יָרָבְעָם וּבְחַטָּאתֹו אֲשֶׁר הֶחֱטִיא אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ ס
