NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king of Judah1 Igitur in octavodecimo anno regni Jeroboam filii Nabat, regnavit Abiam super Judam.
and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant of Absalom.2 Tribus annis regnavit in Jerusalem : nomen matris ejus Maacha filia Abessalom.
In everything he fol owed the sinful example of his father before him; his heart was not wholly withYahweh his God, as the heart of David his ancestor had been.3 Ambulavitque in omnibus peccatis patris sui, quæ fecerat ante eum : nec erat cor ejus perfectum cum Domino Deo suo, sicut cor David patris ejus.
However, for David's sake, Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, with a son to succeed him,so keeping Jerusalem secure;4 Sed propter David dedit ei Dominus Deus suus lucernam in Jerusalem, ut suscitaret filium ejus post eum, et statueret Jerusalem :
for David had done what Yahweh regarded as right and had never in all his life disobeyed whatever hecommanded him (except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite).5 eo quod fecisset David rectum in oculis Domini, et non declinasset ab omnibus quæ præceperat ei cunctis diebus vitæ suæ, excepto sermone Uriæ Hethæi.
.6 Attamen bellum fuit inter Roboam et Jeroboam omni tempore vitæ ejus.
The rest of the history of Abijam, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah? Abijam and Jeroboam made war on each other.7 Reliqua autem sermonum Abiam, et omnia quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda ? Fuitque prælium inter Abiam et inter Jeroboam.
When Abijam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asa succeededhim.8 Et dormivit Abiam cum patribus suis, et sepelierunt eum in civitate David, regnavitque Asa filius ejus pro eo.
In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah9 In anno ergo vigesimo Jeroboam regis Israël regnavit Asa rex Juda,
and reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant ofAbsalom.10 et quadraginta et uno anno regnavit in Jerusalem. Nomen matris ejus Maacha filia Abessalom.
Asa did what Yahweh regards as right, as his ancestor David had done.11 Et fecit Asa rectum ante conspectum Domini, sicut David pater ejus :
He drove the male prostitutes out of the country and got rid of all the idols which his ancestors hadmade.12 et abstulit effeminatos de terra, purgavitque universas sordes idolorum quæ fecerant patres ejus.
He even deprived his grandmother Maacah of the dignity of Great Lady for having made an obscenityfor Asherah; Asa cut down her obscenity and burnt it in the ravine of the Kidron.13 Insuper et Maacham matrem suam amovit, ne esset princeps in sacris Priapi, et in luco ejus quem consecraverat : subvertitque specum ejus, et confregit simulacrum turpissimum, et combussit in torrente Cedron :
Though the high places were not abolished, Asa's heart was loyal to Yahweh throughout his life.14 excelsa autem non abstulit. Verumtamen cor Asa perfectum erat cum Domino cunctis diebus suis :
He deposited his father's and his own dedicated gifts of silver, gold and sacred vessels in the Templeof Yahweh.15 et intulit ea quæ sanctificaverat pater suus, et voverat, in domum Domini, argentum, et aurum, et vasa.
Asa and Baasha king of Israel were at war with each other throughout their reigns.16 Bellum autem erat inter Asa, et Baasa regem Israël cunctis diebus eorum.
Baasha king of Israel marched on Judah and fortified Ramah to blockade Asa king of Judah.17 Ascendit quoque Baasa rex Israël in Judam, et ædificavit Rama, ut non posset quispiam egredi vel ingredi de parte Asa regis Juda.
Asa then took al the remaining silver and gold left in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and theroyal palace. Entrusting this to his servants, King Asa sent them with the fol owing message to Ben-Hadad sonof Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, the king of Aram who lived in Damascus,18 Tollens itaque Asa omne argentum et aurum quod remanserat in thesauris domus Domini, et in thesauris domus regiæ, et dedit illud in manus servorum suorum : et misit ad Benadad filium Tabremon filii Hezion, regem Syriæ, qui habitabat in Damasco, dicens :
'Let us make an al iance between myself and yourself, between my father and your father! Look, Ihave sent you a gift of silver and gold. Come, break off your al iance with Baasha king of Israel, which wil makehim withdraw from me.'19 Fœdus est inter me et te, et inter patrem meum et patrem tuum : ideo misi tibi munera, argentum et aurum : et peto ut venias, et irritum facias fœdus quod habes cum Baasa rege Israël, et recedat a me.
Ben-Hadad listened favourably to King Asa, and sent the generals of his armies to attack the towns ofIsrael; he ravaged Ijon, Dan, Abel-Beth-Maacah, al Chinneroth, and the whole territory of Naphtali.20 Acquiescens Benadad regi Asa, misit principes exercitus sui in civitates Israël, et percusserunt Ahion, et Dan, et Abeldomum Maacha, et universam Cenneroth, omnem scilicet terram Nephthali.
When Baasha heard this he gave up fortifying Ramah and retired to Tirzah.21 Quod cum audisset Baasa, intermisit ædificare Rama, et reversus est in Thersa.
King Asa then summoned al Judah, no one was exempt; they took away the stones and timber withwhich Baasha had been fortifying Ramah, and King Asa used them to fortify Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.22 Rex autem Asa nuntium misit in omnem Judam, dicens : Nemo sit excusatus. Et tulerunt lapides de Rama, et ligna ejus, quibus ædificaverat Baasa, et exstruxit de eis rex Asa Gabaa Benjamin, et Maspha.
The rest of the history of Asa, al his valour, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of theAnnals of the Kings of Judah? In his old age, however, he contracted a disease of his feet.23 Reliqua autem omnium sermonum Asa, et universæ fortitudines ejus, et cuncta quæ fecit, et civitates quas exstruxit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda ? Verumtamen in tempore senectutis suæ doluit pedes.
When Asa fell asleep with his ancestors, he was buried with his ancestors in the City of his ancestorDavid; his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him.24 Et dormivit cum patribus suis, et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David patris sui. Regnavitque Josaphat filius ejus pro eo.
Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and hereigned over Israel for two years.25 Nadab vero filius Jeroboam regnavit super Israël anno secundo Asa regis Juda : regnavitque super Israël duobus annis.
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied his father's example and the sin into which he hadled Israel.26 Et fecit quod malum est in conspectu Domini, et ambulavit in viis patris sui, et in peccatis ejus quibus peccare fecit Israël.
Baasha son of Ahijah, of the House of Issachar, plotted against him and murdered him at Gibbethon,a Philistine town which Nadab and all Israel were besieging.27 Insidiatus est autem ei Baasa filius Ahiæ de domo Issachar, et percussit eum in Gebbethon, quæ est urbs Philisthinorum : siquidem Nadab et omnis Israël obsidebant Gebbethon.
Baasha kil ed Nadab and succeeded him in the third year of Asa king of Judah.28 Interfecit ergo illum Baasa in anno tertio Asa regis Juda, et regnavit pro eo.
No sooner was he king than he butchered the entire House of Jeroboam, not sparing a soul, and putan end to it, just as Yahweh had foretold through his servant Ahijah of Shiloh,29 Cumque regnasset, percussit omnem domum Jeroboam : non dimisit ne unam quidem animam de semine ejus donec deleret eum, juxta verbum Domini quod locutus fuerat in manu servi sui Ahiæ Silonitis,
because of the sins which he had committed and into which he had led Israel, and because he hadprovoked the anger of Yahweh, God of Israel.30 propter peccata Jeroboam, quæ peccaverat, et quibus peccare fecerat Israël : et propter delictum quo irritaverat Dominum Deum Israël.
The rest of the history of Nadab, his entire career, is this not recorded in31 Reliqua autem sermonum Nadab, et omnia quæ operatus est, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Israël ?
the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?32 Fuitque bellum inter Asa, et Baasa regem Israël, cunctis diebus eorum.
In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of Israel at Tirzah fortwenty-four years.33 Anno tertio Asa regis Juda, regnavit Baasa filius Ahiæ super omnem Israël in Thersa, viginti quatuor annis.
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied the example of Jeroboam and the sin into which hehad led Israel.34 Et fecit malum coram Domino, ambulavitque in via Jeroboam, et in peccatis ejus quibus peccare fecit Israël.
