NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king of Judah1 Igitur in octavo decimo anno regni Ieroboam filii Nabat regnavit Abiam super Iudam.
and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant of Absalom.2 Tribus annis regnavit in Ierusalem; nomen matris eius Maacha filia Abessalom.
In everything he fol owed the sinful example of his father before him; his heart was not wholly withYahweh his God, as the heart of David his ancestor had been.3 Ambulavitque in omnibus peccatis patris sui, quae fecerat ante eum; nec erat cor eius perfectum cum Domino Deo suo sicut cor David patris eius.
However, for David's sake, Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, with a son to succeed him,so keeping Jerusalem secure;4 Sed propter David dedit ei Dominus Deus suus lucernam in Ierusalem, ut suscitaret filium eius post eum et statueret Ierusalem;
for David had done what Yahweh regarded as right and had never in all his life disobeyed whatever hecommanded him (except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite).5 eo quod fecisset David rectum in oculis Domini et non declinasset ab omnibus, quae praeceperat ei, cunctis diebus vitae suae, excepta re Uriae Hetthaei.

The rest of the history of Abijam, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah? Abijam and Jeroboam made war on each other.7 Reliqua autem gestorum Abiam et omnia, quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Iudae? Fuitque bellum inter Abiam et inter Ieroboam.
When Abijam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asa succeededhim.8 Et dormivit Abiam cum patribus suis, et sepelierunt eum in civitate David; regnavitque Asa filius eius pro eo.
In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah9 In anno ergo vicesimo Ieroboam regis Israel regnavit Asa rex Iudae
and reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant ofAbsalom.10 et quadraginta et uno anno regnavit in Ierusalem. Nomen matris eius Maacha filia Abessalom.
Asa did what Yahweh regards as right, as his ancestor David had done.11 Et fecit Asa rectum ante conspectum Domini sicut David pater eius.
He drove the male prostitutes out of the country and got rid of all the idols which his ancestors hadmade.12 Et abstulit prostibula de terra purgavitque universas sordes idolorum, quae fecerant patres eius.
He even deprived his grandmother Maacah of the dignity of Great Lady for having made an obscenityfor Asherah; Asa cut down her obscenity and burnt it in the ravine of the Kidron.13 Insuper et Maacham matrem suam amovit, ne esset domina, eo quod fecisset abominationem Aserae; confregitque Asa simulacrum turpissimum et combussit in torrente Cedron.
Though the high places were not abolished, Asa's heart was loyal to Yahweh throughout his life.14 Excelsa autem non abstulit; verumtamen cor Asa perfectum erat coram Domino cunctis diebus suis.
He deposited his father's and his own dedicated gifts of silver, gold and sacred vessels in the Templeof Yahweh.15 Et intulit ea, quae sanctificaverat pater suus et quae ipse voverat, in domum Domini, argentum et aurum et vasa.
Asa and Baasha king of Israel were at war with each other throughout their reigns.16 Bellum autem erat inter Asa et Baasa regem lsrael cunctis diebus eorum.
Baasha king of Israel marched on Judah and fortified Ramah to blockade Asa king of Judah.17 Ascendit quoque Baasa rex Israel in Iudam et aedificavit Rama, ut non posset quispiam egredi vel ingredi de parte Asa regis Iudae.
Asa then took al the remaining silver and gold left in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and theroyal palace. Entrusting this to his servants, King Asa sent them with the fol owing message to Ben-Hadad sonof Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, the king of Aram who lived in Damascus,18 Tollens itaque Asa omne argentum et aurum, quod remanserat in thesauris domus Domini et in thesauris domus regiae, dedit illud in manu servorum suorum et misit ad Benadad filium Tabremmon filii Hezion regem Syriae, qui habitabat in Damasco, dicens:
'Let us make an al iance between myself and yourself, between my father and your father! Look, Ihave sent you a gift of silver and gold. Come, break off your al iance with Baasha king of Israel, which wil makehim withdraw from me.'19 “ Foedus est inter me et te et inter patrem meum et patrem tuum; ideo misi tibi munera, argentum et aurum, et peto, ut irritum facias foedus, quod habes cum Baasa rege Israel, et recedat a me ”.
Ben-Hadad listened favourably to King Asa, and sent the generals of his armies to attack the towns ofIsrael; he ravaged Ijon, Dan, Abel-Beth-Maacah, al Chinneroth, and the whole territory of Naphtali.20 Acquiescens Benadad regi Asa misit principes exercituum suorum in civitates Israel, et percusserunt Ahion et Dan et Abelbethmaacha et universam Chenereth cum omni terra Nephthali.
When Baasha heard this he gave up fortifying Ramah and retired to Tirzah.21 Quod cum audisset Baasa, cessavit aedificare Rama et reversus est in Thersa.
King Asa then summoned al Judah, no one was exempt; they took away the stones and timber withwhich Baasha had been fortifying Ramah, and King Asa used them to fortify Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.22 Rex autem Asa convocavit omnem Iudam, nullo excusato; et tulerunt lapides Rama et ligna eius, quibus aedificaverat Baasa, et exstruxit de eis rex Asa Gabaa Beniamin et Maspha.
The rest of the history of Asa, al his valour, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of theAnnals of the Kings of Judah? In his old age, however, he contracted a disease of his feet.23 Reliqua autem omnium gestorum Asa et universa fortitudo eius et cuncta, quae fecit, et civitates, quas exstruxit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Iudae? Verumtamen in tempore senectutis suae doluit pedes;
When Asa fell asleep with his ancestors, he was buried with his ancestors in the City of his ancestorDavid; his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him.24 et dormivit cum patribus suis et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David patris sui. Regnavitque Iosaphat filius eius pro eo.
Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and hereigned over Israel for two years.25 Nadab vero filius Ieroboam regnavit super Israel anno secundo Asa regis Iudae; regnavitque super Israel duobus annis.
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied his father's example and the sin into which he hadled Israel.26 Et fecit, quod malum est in conspectu Domini, et ambulavit in viis patris sui et in peccato eius, quo peccare fecit Israel.
Baasha son of Ahijah, of the House of Issachar, plotted against him and murdered him at Gibbethon,a Philistine town which Nadab and all Israel were besieging.27 Insidiatus est autem ei Baasa filius Ahiae de domo Issachar et percussit eum in Gebbethon, quae est urbs Philisthinorum; siquidem Nadab et omnis Israel obsidebant Gebbethon.
Baasha kil ed Nadab and succeeded him in the third year of Asa king of Judah.28 Interfecit igitur illum Baasa in anno tertio Asa regis Iudae et regnavit pro eo.
No sooner was he king than he butchered the entire House of Jeroboam, not sparing a soul, and putan end to it, just as Yahweh had foretold through his servant Ahijah of Shiloh,29 Cumque regnasset, percussit omnem domum Ieroboam; non dimisit ne unam quidem animam de semine eius, donec deleret eam iuxta verbum Domini, quod locutus fuerat in manu servi sui Ahiae Silonitis
because of the sins which he had committed and into which he had led Israel, and because he hadprovoked the anger of Yahweh, God of Israel.30 propter peccata Ieroboam, quae peccaverat et quibus peccare fecerat Israel, et propter delictum, quo irritaverat Dominum, Deum Israel.
The rest of the history of Nadab, his entire career, is this not recorded in31 Reliqua autem gestorum Nadab et omnia, quae fortiter operatus est, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Israel?
the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?32 Fuitque bellum inter Asa et Baasa regem Israel cunctis diebus eorum.
In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of Israel at Tirzah fortwenty-four years.33 Anno tertio Asa regis Iudae regnavit Baasa filius Ahiae super omnem Israel in Thersa viginti quattuor annis;
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied the example of Jeroboam and the sin into which hehad led Israel.34 et fecit malum coram Domino ambulavitque in via Ieroboam et in peccato eius, quo peccare fecit Israel.
