NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, 'Breed, multiply and fil the earth.1 Benedixitque Deus Noë et filiis ejus. Et dixit ad eos : Crescite, et multiplicamini, et replete terram.
Be the terror and the dread of al the animals on land and al the birds of heaven, of everything thatmoves on land and all the fish of the sea; they are placed in your hands.2 Et terror vester ac tremor sit super cuncta animalia terræ, et super omnes volucres cæli, cum universis quæ moventur super terram : omnes pisces maris manui vestræ traditi sunt.
Every living thing that moves wil be yours to eat, no less than the foliage of the plants. I give youeverything,3 Et omne, quod movetur et vivit, erit vobis in cibum : quasi olera virentia tradidi vobis omnia.
with this exception: you must not eat flesh with life, that is to say blood, in it.4 Excepto, quod carnem cum sanguine non comedetis.
And I shal demand account of your life-blood, too. I shall demand it of every animal, and of man. Ofman as regards his fel ow-man, I shal demand account for human life.5 Sanguinem enim animarum vestrarum requiram de manu cunctarum bestiarum : et de manu hominis, de manu viri, et fratris ejus requiram animam hominis.
He who sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God was mancreated.6 Quicumque effuderit humanum sanguinem, fundetur sanguis illius : ad imaginem quippe Dei factus est homo.
Be fruitful then and multiply, teem over the earth and subdue it!'7 Vos autem crescite et multiplicamini, et ingredimini super terram, et implete eam.
God spoke as fol ows to Noah and his sons,8 Hæc quoque dixit Deus ad Noë, et ad filios ejus cum eo :
'I am now establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants to come,9 Ecce ego statuam pactum meum vobiscum, et cum semine vestro post vos :
and with every living creature that was with you: birds, cattle and every wild animal with you;everything that came out of the ark, every living thing on earth.10 et ad omnem animam viventem, quæ est vobiscum, tam in volucribus quam in jumentis et pecudibus terræ cunctis, quæ egressa sunt de arca, et universis bestiis terræ.
And I shal maintain my covenant with you: that never again shal all living things be destroyed by thewaters of a flood, nor shal there ever again be a flood to devastate the earth.'11 Statuam pactum meum vobiscum, et nequaquam ultra interficietur omnis caro aquis diluvii, neque erit deinceps diluvium dissipans terram.
'And this', God said, 'is the sign of the covenant which I now make between myself and you and everyliving creature with you for al ages to come:12 Dixitque Deus : Hoc signum f?deris quod do inter me et vos, et ad omnem animam viventem, quæ est vobiscum in generationes sempiternas :
I now set my bow in the clouds and it wil be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.13 arcum meum ponam in nubibus, et erit signum f?deris inter me et inter terram.
When I gather the clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds,14 Cumque obduxero nubibus cælum, apparebit arcus meus in nubibus :
I shal recall the covenant between myself and you and every living creature, in a word al living things, and never again will the waters become a flood to destroy al living things.15 et recordabor f?deris mei vobiscum, et cum omni anima vivente quæ carnem vegetat : et non erunt ultra aquæ diluvii ad delendum universam carnem.
When the bow is in the clouds I shall see it and call to mind the eternal covenant between God andevery living creature on earth, that is, al living things.'16 Eritque arcus in nubibus, et videbo illum, et recordabor f?deris sempiterni quod pactum est inter Deum et omnem animam viventem universæ carnis quæ est super terram.
'That', God told Noah, 'is the sign of the covenant I have established between myself and al livingthings on earth.'17 Dixitque Deus ad Noë : Hoc erit signum f?deris, quod constitui inter me et omnem carnem super terram.
The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth-Ham being the father ofCanaan.18 Erant ergo filii Noë, qui egressi sunt de arca, Sem, Cham et Japheth : porro Cham ipse est pater Chanaan.
These three were Noah's sons, and from these the whole earth was peopled.19 Tres isti filii sunt Noë : et ab his disseminatum est omne genus hominum super universam terram.
Noah, a til er of the soil, was the first to plant the vine.20 C?pitque Noë vir agricola exercere terram, et plantavit vineam.
He drank some of the wine, and while he was drunk, he lay uncovered in his tent.21 Bibensque vinum inebriatus est, et nudatus in tabernaculo suo.
Ham, father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside.22 Quod cum vidisset Cham, pater Chanaan, verenda scilicet patris sui esse nudata, nuntiavit duobus fratribus suis foras.
Shem and Japheth took a cloak and they both put it over their shoulders, and walking backwards, covered their father's nakedness; they kept their faces turned away, and they did not look at their father naked.23 At vero Sem et Japheth pallium imposuerunt humeris suis, et incedentes retrorsum, operuerunt verenda patris sui : faciesque eorum aversæ erant, et patris virilia non viderunt.
When Noah awoke from his stupor he learned what his youngest son had done to him,24 Evigilans autem Noë ex vino, cum didicisset quæ fecerat ei filius suus minor,
and said: Accursed be Canaan, he shal be his brothers' meanest slave.25 ait : Maledictus Chanaan,
servus servorum erit fratribus suis.
He added: Blessed be Yahweh, God of Shem, let Canaan be his slave!26 Dixitque : Benedictus Dominus Deus Sem,
sit Chanaan servus ejus.
May God make space for Japheth, may he live in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his slave!27 Dilatet Deus Japheth, et habitet in tabernaculis Sem,
sitque Chanaan servus ejus.
After the flood Noah lived three hundred and fifty years.28 Vixit autem Noë post diluvium trecentis quinquaginta annis.
In al , Noah's life lasted nine hundred and fifty years; then he died.29 Et impleti sunt omnes dies ejus nongentorum quinquaginta annorum : et mortuus est.
